Textbook
Vector mechanics for Engineers- Dynamics, by Beer,
Johnston, and Cornwell. 11th edition, McGraw Hill
Publishing Company
Course Description
Kinematics and kinetics of particles, energy and momentum
methods for rigid bodies, and mechanical vibrations

Brief List of Topics

1. Particle Kinematics
2. Particle Kinetics
3. Systems of Particles
4. Rigid Body Kinematics
5. Rigid Body Kinetics
6. Structural Dynamics & Mechanical Vibrations

Homework
There will be homework due every week. All work should be
your own and not shared with classmates. Any work that is
the same as that of another student will be given a score of
zero. Homework is due at the beginning of class on the date
indicated. Late homework will not be accepted. Homework
problems will be completed in a neat and orderly fashion in
pencil (no ink) on engineering paper or blank white paper (no
lined notebook paper and no scratch paper). Homework
results will be neatly summarized with answers clearly
indicated. Lines will be drawn with a straightedge. Messy
work will be marked down or given a zero.
Late homework and/or those not conforming to the above guidelines
will not be graded or result in reduced points.
5

Scheduled Examinations
There will be three exams. Two midterm exams will be given
during normal lecture hours and one final exam will be given
during finals week at the assigned timeslot. Anyone missing
the exams must notify the instructor in advance. A written
letter signed by a medical doctor or another appropriate
official must be submitted within one week of the missed
exam. Unexcused absences will lead to a score of zero for the
exam. Excused absences will lead to rescheduled exam based
on consultation with the instructor.

Course Objectives
The objective of this course is to provide a detailed
understanding of particle and rigid body dynamics.
Specifically, students will:
1. Gain background conceptual knowledge of properties of
dynamic systems
2. Learn key terminology to translate complicated real-world
problems to more manageable solutions
3. Learn to apply different solution methods to similar
problems and identify the advantages and disadvantages
with each

Student Outcomes
1. An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science,
and engineering
2. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering
problems.

Emergency Policy
The safety of all students attending CSUF is of paramount
importance. During an emergency it is necessary for
students to have a basic understanding of their personnel
responsibilities and the Universitys emergency response
procedures. Detailed information and guidelines can be
obtained
from

udents.html

Disabled Student Service

The University requires students with disabilities to register
with the Office of Disabled Student Services (DSS), located
in UH-101 and at (657) 2783112, in order to receive
prescribed
accommodations
appropriate
to
their
disability. Students requesting accommodations should
inform the instructor during the first week of classes about
any disability or special needs.

Academic Misconduct
This course will be conducted under the Universitys
academic misconduct policies (UPS 300.021). Violations
will not be tolerated.
Drop Policy
Spring 2016 Schedule contains the University regulations
and the deadlines for dropping this course. Note that the
department stamp and/or the department chairs signature
is required in addition to instructors signature.
