BARANGAY 1

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
When Martial Law was declared by the deposed Pres. Ferdinand E.
Marcos, it was that barangays has been created.
LOCATION AND LAND AREA
Barangay 1 is located at the northwest coast of Bacolod City. Barangay
Banago bound
it on the north on the northeast by the barangay
Mandalagan, on the east by the barangay 5, on the southeast by the
barangay 4, on the south by barangay 3, on the southwest by the barangay
2 in the west by the Guimaras Strait.
BARANGGAY 3
BACKGROUND
Barangay 3 is an urban community locates in the heart of the City of
Bacolod with a total land area of 14,668 hectares and a population of 4, 980
people. The brand name is WATER RANCH because the barangay catches
water from the areas during rainy season, settle in the community as it is
known as a catch basin. During the early years the barangay is a ranch
(cuadra) because of the abundance of cogon like grasses to feed the horses.
There are swampy areas in the barangay and serves as a source of livelihood
for they used it as a fish pond.
The boundary landmarks are Andres Bonifacio Elementary School along
18 Gatuslao Street, the mansion of hotelier the late Lourdes Ciocon and
Caltex Depot along San Juan Streets.
Barangay 3 is composed of 7 puroks, 1 class B and class C subdivisions.
Each purok celebrates their own fiesta in honor of saints which the devotees
has chosen package with so many entertainment.
BARANGAY 5
PHYSICAL PROFILE
Barangay 5 is one of the forty-one (41) urban barangays which was
created in 1973, under Ordinance No. P.D. 86-86-A. Modified on December
17, 1985 under City Ordinance No. 08, approving and adopting the
Recommended Delineation of Boundaries of Sixty One (61) Urban and Rural
Barangays.
GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION AND BOUNDARIES:
Barangay 5 is located within the City Radius. It is bounded by Lacson
Street on the West, Mandalagan Bridge on the North along Riverside River on
the Northeast and East side, La Salle Avenue on the Southeast and 17th
Street on the South.
BARANGAY 10
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Barangay 10, like most of the urban barangays of Bacolod is situated at
the heart of the city. It was created by virtue of the Presidential Degree

promulgated by then President Marcos in 1973. Its progenitor was the


citizens assembly.
Its natural and physical boundaries consist of Mambuloc Bridge on the
South, Gatuslao Street on the East, Bacolod Fire station in the North and the
Bacolod Reclamation Area on the West.
Barangay 10, metamorphosed from its notorious past into a bustling
community of peace-loving and friendly people. Its original settlers include
rice traders from the Municipality of Dumangas, Province of Iloilo, whose
business provides ample employment opportunities to the resident of the
community. On the other hand, a number of inhabitants of the place engaged
in fish vending and fish drying that had survived until this time.
Under the able and pro-active leadership of Hon. Felixberto P. Verba Jr.,
the incumbent Punong Barangay and through the collaborative efforts of the
members of the Barangay Council as well as the support of the constituents
of the community, Barangay 10 became a recipient of numerous awards that
were the source of the constant inspiration and admiration among various
Barangay in the city. Foremost among this awards are the: The cleanest and
Greenest Barangay in the city in 1997 and the champion in the Masskara
Dance Parade Competition in the Barangay category in 1998. The community
was also cited for its contribution during the Centennial celebration of the
Philippine Independence in 1998.
Indeed much is needed to address the various problems confronting the
community, but with the continued support and cooperation of the
constituents as well as the effort of the barangay and purok officials, these
difficulties can be overcome.
BARANGAY 11
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Barangay 11 is one of the forty one barangays which was created by
virtue of Presidential Decree, by then, President Marcos in 1973. Its
progenitor was the infamous citizen's assembly.
Barangay 11 is the seat of the San Sebastian Cathedral. Under the able
and pro-active leadership of Hon. Ares Raul Dueas Punong Barangay a
neophyte in Politics (1997) and through a collaborative efforts of the
Members of the Barangay Council as well as with the support of its
constituents in the community, Barangay 11 was branded as the "Cathedral
of Faith" in the City of Bacolod in 1999.
Barangay 11 was awarded 3 prize as the cleanest Barangay in 1999. The
Barangay was also cited for its participation in the MassKara Street Dance
Compeittion in 2001.
It is a mainland barangay within the heart of the city.
PHYSICAL PROFILE
LOCATION:
Barangay 11 is situated within the heart of the city. It is bounded on the
North by Burgos St., Brgy. 9; on the East, by Locsin St., Brgy. 21; on the
Southeast by Rizal St.; and on the West, by San Juan - Galo St., Brgy. 12 and
Gatuslao - Galo St.
Barangay 11 landmark is the Bacolod San Sebastian Cathedral and the La
Consolacion College.
BARANGAY 12
INTRODUCTION

Barangay 12 became the basic governmental unit in the nation's political


structure year 1973, Presidential Decree No. 86-86A created Barangays to
provide popular participation in shaping up public policy. All powers,
functions, duties and responsibilities of Barrios, Assembly, Councils and
Officials enumerated in the revised Barrio Charter (R.A. 3590) was
assimilated by the Barangay. On December 17, 1985, City Ordinance No. 08
was created approving and adopting the recommended delineation of Sixty
One (61) Barangays in the City of Bacolod.
LAND AREA / LOCATION
Barangay 12 is one of the Urban Barangay which is geographically
located within the heart of the City Proper wherein big commercial
establishments abound. It has a total land area of 8.0763 hectares. Under
our jurisdiction, it is formed a letter J Barangay which consist of Two (2)
Puroks namely Purok Malipayon and Purok Masinadyahon. It is bounded on
the Northwest by Barangay 10, on the East is Barangay 21, passing along
Gonzaga - San Juan Streets. On the North, along Rizal - Lacson Streets is
Barangay 11 and on the Southeast along Locsin Street is Barangay 37, and
on the Southwest is Barangay 13 along Luzuriaga - Locsin Streets. The
fanous 'Manokan Country' can also be found in the Barangay native delicacy
of the residents of Bacolod.
BARANGAY 35
INTRODUCTION
Barangay 35 was created in 1973 by the virtue of Presidential Decree No.
86 and 86-A stating that all Barrios and Poblacion in the Philippines will be
change into Barangays. This was a significant day for the Barangay because
with the decree. They were given status as the basic government until in the
nations Political Structures.
The Barangay 35 was first known as Tambakan Alley or dumped site
area and it was converted into residential land and later in year 1987, in the
virtue of Sangguniang Panlungsod Resolution No. 172 dated August 4, 1987,
it was distributed to 600 families with perpetual occupancy by former City
Mayor Amado Rematche Parreno, Jr.
Today, Barangay 35 is one of the most promising Barangay of 61
Barangays of Bacolod City. This has come to be under the able leadership of
HONORABLE RAYMUNDO P. SAPA, SR. PUNONG BARANGAY and with the full
cooperation of the members of the Barangay Council and also with the full
support and cooperation of the Purok Official and other sectors and most of
all the people of the Barangay.
The Barangay 35, today tagged with the most prestigious and modern
cockpit arena in the whole Negros Occidental, The NEGROS COLISEUM
located at the Reclamation Area covered by the land area of the Barangay
35.
The Barangay 35 produced one famous former MBA Basketball Player,
Maui Huelar, Jr., of the Negros Slashers. Barangay 35 also produced
prominent individuals that help our city such as former City budget Officer,
Mr. Manfredo Montao and former PESO Manager, the late Mr. Renato
Villarmia, Jr. Barangay 35 was also known as the SLAUGHTER CAPITAL OF
THE CITY.
Last November 6, 2006 under the leadership, hardwork and full
cooperation of Punong Barangay Raymudo P. Sapa, Sr. the BARANGAY 35 was
declared as THE DRUG FREE BARANGAY in the whole Philippines and it was
declared by PDDG Edgar Aglipay, Deputy Chief for Admin/AID-SOFT and it

was duly honored by no less than her Excellency Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.


Punong Barangay RAYMUNDO P. SAPA SR, was given an appreciation and
recognition as one of the OUTSTANDING PUNONG BARANGAY in the whole
Philippines.
PROFILE
Location:
Barangay 35 is classified as an Urban Barangay. It is located in Western
side of Alunan and Corazon, bounded on the south by Lupit River, Guimaras
Strait and Rodriguez Bay-bay and bounded on the east by Barangay 36 and
on the north by Barangay 16.
Land Area:
Barangay 35 formerly has 10 hectares land area but due to the reclaimed
area another 1 hectare added, it is relatively plain in Topography. It is
Classified as Urban Barangay.
BARANGAY 36
INTRODUCTION
Barangay No. 36 was officially created in 1973 by virtue of Presidential
Decree No. 86-A stating that all Barrios and Poblacion in the Philippines will
be changed into Barangays. Pursuant to Republic Act 3550 as amended by
Presidential Decree No. 86 and 86-A become the Barangay chapter This
Decree further provided that a Barangay development fund be created solely
for community development projects which meet the requirements set forth
by secretary of local government and community development .All the
specification on the powers, functions, duties and responsibilities in the old
charter were automatically adopted by the Barangay as a bases for
administrative policies. On December 17,1985, City Ordinance No. 08 was
created approving and adopting the recommended delineation of boundaries
of six-one Barangays in the City of Bacolod.
BARANGAY 38
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Barangay 38 was officially created in January 5, 1973 into a Barangay by
virtue by of P.D. No. 86 and 86-A stating that all barrios and poblacion in the
Philippines will be change in to Barangays. Pursuant to R.A. 3590 as
amended by P.D. 86 and 86-A all powers vested in the barrios shall
henceforth be exercised by strengthen and defining the role of the Barangay.
P.D. 86-A provides that the collective vies of the people shall be considered in
the formation of national policies and programs.
In the year 1972 the first designate Barangay Chairman of Barangay 38
was Miss Virgie Alcala and on April 16, 1973. City Mayor Hon Carlos Benares
requested an Emergency Citizen Assembly purposely to appoint the
corresponding Barangay Officials thru public nomination. Mr. Hilario Paz had
been appointed Barangay Captain until the time in the year 1982 when
PRESIDENT FERDINAND E. MARCOS called an election for barangay captain
and councilmen throughout the country. The results of such election for
Barangay Officials in accordance with the votes garnered are as follows to

During the administration of OIC Mayor Amado Parreno in 1986-88, all


Barangay Official were appointed for positions, Mr. Tibus, Sr. took oath of
office as a Barangay Captain and appointment six persons as members of his
Barangay Council.
In 1988 the council of Barangay 38 was conducted as collegial election for
barangay officials. Mr. Agustin Alzaga was voted Barangay Captain and
elected six councilmen and KB Chairman namely:

Mr. Alzaga was not able to finish his terms as Barangay Captain due to his
untimely demise. Mr. Romeo Escalona, being the number one kagawad took
over the position left by Mr. Alzaga by virtue of succession.
In line with the 1994 plebiscite election called by the Commission on
Election for Barangay Officials. Romeo Escalona was officially elected
Barangay Captain. The Barangay Council has appointed Ma. Crestina
Montinola as Barangay treasurer and Filipinas Olam as Barangay Secretary.

In the year 1994 under the leadership of Hon Barangay Captain Romeo
Escalona ther were many changes and development in the Barangay and
with the aid of a Japanese Foundation, a Barangay Hall was duly constructed
in 1996, after the year construction of mini-gym was materialized under the
administration of Hon Congressman Romeo G. Guanzon. Barangay 38 made
various improvement on the instillation of water facilities electrical and
drainage system and road widening.
Barangay 38 has participated in some civil and private organization and
to mentioned Bacolod City most popular fiesta, the MassKara Street Dance
contest where they won third place and best in costume for Barangay
Category. Famous landmarks of Barangay 38 are: the first Chinese school Tay
Tung High School, the Volunteer Chamber Fire Brigade, the oldest
department store in Bacolod and Clair Embroidery near Barangay 38 Peoples
Hall and other Government offices such as DTI, PAG-IBIG and NLRC.
Barangay 38 is blessed with productive and efficient politicians like the
late Congressman Romeo G. Guanzon, SK federation Chairwoman Cristin
Angelie M. Espinosa and presently Hon. City Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia.

Today, there were many changes and development in the barangay under
the able leadership of honorable Punong Barangay Renato Claver and with
the support of his council, purok officials, barangay constituents and other
sectors.
The Barangay 38 has become the vehicle for delivering basic services to
the people such as the installation of water facilities, roads and pathway
widening in purok sampaguita and purok Adelfa, the improvement of
electrical and drainage system, the construction of Barangay Arc, the solid
waste management and the clean and green program was properly
implemented.
Barangay 38 is a drug free awardees and clean and green program
awardee.
BARANGAY ALIJIS
BARANGAY PROFILE
Sometimes in year 1962 when the Honorable City Mayor transmitted his
first endorsement to the City Council of Bacolod a map prepared by the City
Engineers which contains and indicate therein the different boundaries of the
proposed Barrios, it was then that ORDINANCE NO. 116, series of 1962 was
approved.
In 1995, Barangay Alijis started to boost up its name from the rest of the
Barangays in the City because of its landmark, the St. Jude Thaddeus Shrine.
The invincible Barangay Captain Hon. Pepito T. Malapitan from 1994 until the
present, recognizes it as "THE SHRINE OF HOPE" because of its full support to
the development of the Barangay as a whole community.
Barangay Alijis is one of the best and most progressive Barangay in
Bacolod City. The Barangay can be found in the Southern part of Bacolod City
and has land area of 360.4476 hectares with a population of 15,771 these
composed of 2,628 households. There are now 29 Puroks in Barangay Alijis
wherein 30% is the unemployment rate since most of the households are
working and 25% of the households are now squatting. Crimes are not much
of a problem in Barangay Alijis.
An agricultural area gradually improves and develops into an Industrial
site. Soon it will be known not only with its Shrine but also with the opening

of FOOD TERMINAL and SOUTH BOUND TERMINAL wherein most of the


constituents look forward for the job opportunities it can offer.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
BARANGAY ALIJIS is a thriving rural barangay in Bacolod City. Hailed as
one of the best Barangay of Bacolod. Alijis boasts of its glorious pasts.
The named Alijis was taken from the word AGIHIS, a shell used to
abound in the area. During the Spanish Era, Spaniard found it hard to
pronounce Agihis, was formed. Through the years, the name alijis was used
by the folk and adopted as the name of the place up to the present.
In accordance with section 3 of republic Act 2264, the City Council of
Bacolod has the power to create barrios within its territorial jurisdiction and
defined its boundaries.
It was April 5 of the year 1962 when the honorable City Mayor transmitted
his first endorsement to the City Council of Bacolod a map prepared by the
City Engineer, which contains and indicate therein the different boundaries of
the proposed barrios. It was then that ORDINANCE NO. 116; series of 1962
was approved and shall take effect on the first day of May.
The first concrete road was two kilometers long from the high-way but it
served as the barangays main road and access road for cargo vehicles going
to Murcia.
It was only 3rd quarter of 1994 when things began to change for
Barangay Alijis. The newly elected Barangay Officials to change Alijis for a
better Barangay. As years go by, Barangay Alijis is known not only to
Bacolenos but also to the other provinces and countries because of the St.
Jude Thaddeus Shrine which was constructed the year 1995.
PHYSICAL PROFILE
Barangay Alijis is located at the southern part of Bacolod City, which a
total land area of 360.4476 hectares. It is composed of 27 puroks. It is also
as one of the Industrial sites in Bacolod City. Almost 70 % of the agricultural
area was gradually converted into residential area.
Barangay Alijis is four kilometers away from the heart of the City. It has
the land area of 360.4476 hectares. It is surrounded by the five Barangays.
Bounded in the south by Barangay Taculing, by Barangay Mansilingan in the
north, East by Barangay Handumanan, and Tangub in the south and by
Singcang in the west.

BARANGAY ESTEFANIA
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Barangay Estefania before and until now is widely known for its large
tracts of agricultural lands, more commonly called haciendas, owned by
prominent families known for their benevolent in donating some of their
properties for social and charitable purposes. These families include, among
others, the Maravilla and Gonzaga clans. Estefania Maravilla, considerd the
matriarch of the Maravilla family was a spinster and Roman, his nephew, was
fortunate to inherit all her properties after her death.
When communities were organized to become barrios the name Estefania
came in handy and the birth or Barrio Esrtifania came in to being. Said name
was found further social acceptance when Roman Maravilla donated portion
of his property for the establishment of the Estefania Elem. School.
During the Marcos era, when barangay were organized, Barrio Estefania
became Barangay Estefania as it is now.

BARANGAY GRANADA
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
GRANADA, 10 kilometers north-east of the heart of the City of Bacolod
with the total area of 2,984.621 hectares and a population of 18,923 ( in
2004).
Its legend has two (2) versions. One was that of a Spanish soldier who
approached the native who was then planting and asked about the name of
the place. The native conversant of Spanish language, thought he was asked
the name of the tree and so he answered "GRANADA". The other one was
that, when the Spaniards set foot in this place they saw a fruit-bearing tree
abundantly growing which looks like a guava. They identified the tree as
"Granada" and so, they find it comfortable to call the place "Granada".
In 1854, Granada was proclaimed by the Spanish Queen as an
independent municipality annexed to Negros Occidental which is then a civil
province with thirty four (34) municipalities. Its first appointed Presidente
Municipal was Aquilino Sausao. However, by circumstances his descendants
later changed their family name to Sause.
In 1902, under the American Rule, the Civil Governor of the province was
Leandro Locsin while the First Philippine Commission was established with
Jose Ruiz de Luzuriaga as appointed member, Locsin recommended to the
Commission that the number of municipalities be reduced to twenty one (21)
since the province could no longer financially support all of them, especially
the smaller ones.
And so became, on April 21, 1902 by virtue of Commission Act 762,
Granada along with the other municipalities were transformed into a barrio
annexed to Bacolod City. Alangilan, Estefania and Vista Alegre were formerly
part of Granada.
GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION
As been describe, Barangay Granada is among the rural barangay but
classifies as first class barangay of the City of Bacolod. It is bounded in the
east by Barangay Alangilan; in the west by Barangay Estefania; in the north
by the City of Talisay; in the southeast by the Municipality of Murcia and in
the southeast by Barangay Vista Alegre.
This barangay is among the biggest barangays in terms of land area. It
has a total land area of 2,984.621 hectares. Of this area, 25% is residential;
70% is agricultural and 5% utilized for other needs.
Barangay Granada is known for its coolness attributed by its basically
being agricultural area. Travelling around the Barangay will provide a scene

for agricultural production. Soil is suited for planting and its natural coolness
contributes to the production of seasonal fruits such as kaimito, santol,
lanzones, and rambutan, to name few.
BARANGAY TACULING
Barangay Taculing is the second largest barangay in the city in terms of
population. With 22 subdivision in its domain. It is considered as the "Land of
Subdivisions". It is where the Bacolod City National High School is situated.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
According to a legend, there was an ex-captain of a ship who brought a
large tract of land in a place which is now known as Barangay Taculing. For
sentimental reason, he named his newly acquired property Taculin in
memory of his ship, Taculin. Form his land grew in abundance wild grapes
called Bicang. Its fruit was glossy black when ripe in which the people called
it tuling in their native dialect. Because of this, the native called their place
Tuling before it was purchase by the ex-captain. There was confusion as to
the name of the place. Some people called it Tuling while others called it
Taculin. But as the years went on the people gradually called the place
Taculing for proper identification.
In order to officially identify the place, the Barangay Council of 1964-1968
passed a resolution sponsored by Councilmen Ivar Solidom and Rodolfo
Aspan to officially name the barangay as Barangay Taculing.
The offices of the City Mayor, City Council, City Superintendent of Schools,
City Treasurer, Division Superintendent of Schools of Negros Occidental and
the Secretary of Education, Manila were each furnished a copy of the
resolution.
Since then, the place is called, Barangay Taculing.
PHYSICAL PROFILE
Location
Barangay Taculing is geographically located in the central part of Bacolod
City, that is 3.3 kilometers away from City proper.
It is bounded on the Northwest by the City Proper, on the east by Barangay
Mansilingan, on the south by Barangay Alijis, on the southwest by Barangay
Singcang, and on the northeast by Barangay Villamonte and Vista Alegre.
BARANGAY TANGUB
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
A story handed down form the early residents of Barangay about hew this
place got its name. Long ago, the Barangay was covered with thick forest
with wild animals and birds. One day while the villagers were having their
noonday rest in their cogon huts, they heard an unusual sound. The strong
and brave, curios to know what the sound was, left their huts in hurry with
their spears and dogs and proceeded to the direction of sound. It was not
long before they caught sight of the biggest deer in the world. They set a
strong trap near the south of the Magsungay creek because they believed
that the deer must be very thirsty and they anxiously watched the trap. After
a while they heard a faint rushing sound and it get louder and louder and a
few seconds later the biggest deer in the world was running towards the
trap. The villagers had a big feast after that, since that time, people called
the place TANGAB Which means trap in English.

It was on 1950 when the Mayor of Bacolod appointed the first Barrio
Lieutenant and in 1967 it was formally made a Barrio and the name TANGUB
was adopted by the residents.
