Seoul suspends its operations in the inter-Korean industrial region Kaesong
South Korea announced Wednesday that it will suspend for the first time all its activities in the
inter-Korean industrial region Kaesong, as a response to the nuclear test and the launching of a
missile by North Korea, informs AFP.
"We have decided to stop all operations at the Kaesong industrial complex so that... our
investment in the complex would not be used by the North to fund its nuclear and missile
development," Hong Yong-Pyo, Seoul's unification minister in charge of cross-border affairs,
told a press conference.
Opened in 2004 as a symbol of "reconciliation" between the two Koreas, the industrial area
Kaesong, financed by South Korea, is a crucial source of international income for DPRK.
Located at around 10km from the borderline, on the North Korean side, at Kaesong there are
53.000 North Korean workers, in 124 manufacturing South Korean enterprises.
The Government and the South Korean businesses have invested here, in more than 10 years,
over one trillion won (742 million EURO), declared Hong, mentioning that some of this amount
of money was used by DPRK to finance their nuclear and ballistic programs.
A total of 184 South Korean entrepreneurs presently work in Kaesong. All of them will be
expatriated, announced the Minister, which underlined the fact that Seoul announced DPRK of
this beforehand.
"We ask everyone to understand our decision, which is inevitable because of the seriousness of
the situation in the Korean peninsula", declared the South Korean official.

Kaesong was, for a long time, sheltered from the degrading relations in the Korean peninsula.
However, in the spring of 2013, DPRK closed it down for 5 months, after a third nuclear test
made by DPRK, trespassing the UN Resolutions.
