THANK YOU

for a better community, for a better us!

DEAR CADILLAC AREA COMMUNITY,

As activist Cesar Chavez said we cannot seek achievement for ourselves and
forget about the progress and prosperity of our community. He continued to
say our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs
of others, for their sakes and for our own. These principles are flourishing at the
Cadillac Area YMCA.

Thank you Baker College of Michigan

for their continued support of the Cadillac Area YMCA.
Their gift to the Y strengthens our community and makes a
difference in the lives of each individual they serve.

In 2009, the Cadillac Area YMCA opened the doors of our Dillon Community
Center. The achievement was realized through the giving and volunteer support
of several in the community. Notably, Dr. Don and Pat Lakin, Anne and Mike
Zdrowdski, and Mary and Thomas Dillon, along with others were key in seeing the organization
grow. It took, however, the generosity of one more major supporter to take it to the next level
Baker College.
Since 2008, Baker College has been an key member of the Cadillac Area YMCA team. Baker
College Cadillac Campus, through the leadership of Robert Vandellen, its then President,
provided the land on which the facility now sits with a generous 99 year evergreen lease
for $1 per year, which renews annually automatically. The Baker College Cadillac Campus
generosity did not end there. It also donated $1,250,000 toward the YMCAs construction. The
Baker College System, parent company of Baker of Cadillac based in Flint MI, then continued
the investment in the Cadillac Area YMCA by loaning an additional $1,018,745 to help the Y
restructure its construction debt and keep its doors open.

So perhaps the biggest news of 2015, came to us on January 1, 2016 when the Baker College
System, in its continued dedication to the Cadillac area community, signed a new loan agreement
that forgave over $817,033 of the YMCAs outstanding loan. With a commitment from the YMCA
to pay $175,000 over the next 5 years, Baker College System will in effect donate the remainder
making the YMCA debt free. While this amazing gift is not reflected in the 2015 financials
included in this report, it is the biggest news of the year and secures our Y for the generations to
come.
Our year also culminated with a tremendous gift from Cadillac Mortgage providing the remaining
$26,000 needed to purchase the timing system for our Cadillac Currents Swim Team. Finally our
Y received a $10,000 grant from Consumers Energy to support our expanding Early Childhood
Programming.
The YMCA would not exist if not for the generosity of the individuals, families, and businesses
within this community who believe and support its mission. These wonderful gifts do not mean
our charitable mission is complete, rather they are recognition of the good being done. It is only
part of the Ys growth. If you are interested in joining the YMCA, making a financial contribution,
or donating your time, contact Dan Smith, Paul King, or Kurt Baney at the Y to learn more.

he will be able to rub it in my face for

Cadillac Area YMCA Growth

Over the past 6 years of operations in our

facilities, we have experienced a great amount
of growth, both by the communitys support
and by generous donations. With 6 different
departments running hundreds of programs,
we continue to cultivate growth, because of
our cause and mission. We are always looking
for qualified individuals to help in our causes
whether it is: afterschool tutors, program teachers,
group exercise instructors, child watch attendants,
or volunteers. We are grateful for those who have
been a part of the Ys cause.

New Programing
for Tweens

Youth Fit & Tween Zone are two new programs developed
through donations and grants to meet community needs
for tween programming. Youth Fit is a partner program
with Munson Healthcare Cadillac for youth ages 8-12 to be
active and have loads of fun. It is run by a coordinator who
leads games and exercise as well as talks about healthy
food choices. Tween Zone is a safe environment where
youth can learn, grow, and play with peers. The space is
outfitted with games that encourage brain development
and active movement. With the creation of Tween Zone
we have seen an average of 5.5 tweens per day. They
made Christmas cards for our Senior Fit program which
has some 80 participants.

As a teacher and as one of the Tutors for the Cadillac Y

Afterschool Tutoring Program, I have seen many rewards.
My favorite one is the smile one of my own students gave
me as she commented on loving the fact that she knew
what we were doing in class. I get it! I enjoyed seeing
her hand up more in class and watching her be more
confident.

After School Tutoring

Five elementary schools in the Cadillac Area Public and

Pine River Area School Districts are participating in an
Afterschool Tutoring Program. Through the five day a week
program, 372 students (2015) were able to benefit from
a healthy snack and/or meal, physical activity, nutrition
education and 3 days per week, of academic tutoring. The
combination of food and physical activity helps students
be refreshed and ready to learn when they go to tutoring.
The results are impressive. Academic Assessments at Pine
River show, 48% of the students increased their reading
by one level, 43% increased their reading by 2, 3 or more
levels. Session 5 students in 1st and 2nd grades at
Kenwood Elementary increased their oral reading level by
an average of 4.4 levels.

The After School Tutoring

program run by the YMCA
has been a blessing for my
family and more importantly
my daughter. Ellie had difficulty
with math and reading and had
fallen behind in both areas. The
Ys program at Forest View gave
Ellie the extra support that she
needed in both subjects, and
really expanded her ability to
stay consistent in her education.
I loved the fact that it included
fun physical activity every day.
It made it feel to her more like
fun instead of work. It allowed
Ellie to build a relationship
with the tutors which made
her feel more connected and
invested in the program, and led
to better results. Thank you
for helping my daughter. The
impact that youve made will be
there forever.

The 2015 Healthy Kids Day at our facilities

was a huge success this year. This day
is set aside as a day for youth of all ages
to come and learn what it truly means to
be healthy. The day was filled with fun and
activities from a Try New Things food
experience, to swim lessons in the pool, and
back to sack races in the gym. Over all we
had 280 participants in the day, families
came early and stayed late. It was a fun
filled event for the whole family to enjoy.

FREE 7th Grade Membership

This years free 7th grade membership program received a grant from the
Cadillac Area Community Foundation - Youth Advisory Committee (CACFYAC). This grant allowed for program expansion beyond just CAPS
students. Overall an average of 34 teens per month were able to utilize this
community benefit. The Y chose to focus this program on 7th grade teens
due to the observation that this time of life presents an increased amount
of social pressure and desire for independence. The YMCA teen programs
strive to provide a positive environment where teens can be mentored
in a recreational setting that allows social connection with peers and age
appropriate independence. Our hope is these teens find ways to create
healthy habits of recreation in their early teen years. We are grateful for
the support of CACF-YAC and others in fulfilling this mission.

PRESCHOOL

Healthy Eating

Joe Hughes son Dominic is a participant in one of our

Y Preschool classrooms. Dominic struggled to come to
preschool the first month and Dad was ready to throw
the towel in until I asked him to start staying at preschool
with Dominic until he felt safe. Dad, who works 2nd shift,
struggled with this because of fatigue, but did it for about
3 weeks. Dominic just needed a sense of security while
being here, and truly tried to dominate Dad while he was
here. Dad however, did not just pay attention to his son, he
built relationships with other students in the class which
also helped Dominic build friendships. Dominic is now
coming in confident, feeling safe and willing to let Dad
retreat home for some much needed rest. I would like to
thank Joe for pushing his own needs aside to assist in his
sons adjustment to preschool and also for being a great
role model on how to build/establish new relationships and
friends in one of our Y Preschool programs.

To compliment the benefits of physical activity through exercise

and sports, a Healthy Eating program was added this year. With
funding through a Walmart State Giving grant, we acquired
portable kitchen equipment for food preparation demonstrations
and Healthy Eating classes. We also added healthy eating and
nutrition lessons to other programs. Over 50 Senior Fit class
members participated in a Make Health Your Hobby workshop
that included identifying healthy food choices. Preschoolers
learned to choose water as a healthy drink and used fruit to make
flavored water. Food and Fun curriculum activities such as making
individual smoothies, sampling new foods, choosing healthy fats
and fewer sugary drinks were enjoyed by Youth attending Dillon
Day Camp at the Y and Camp Torenta day and resident camps.
One of the participants in our first Cooking Matters class learned
ways to get her family to eat whole grains. She shared the
recipes we made in class with her family and said they liked what
we made and couldnt believe it was healthy.

Senior Fit

My Y Story

The Senior Fit Program held at the Y on Tuesday and Thursday has 75 seniors in three
classes. The seniors range in age from 55 to 92 and most have chronic conditions that
they must deal with. Participants are usually referred to the program as a continued
rehabilitation for existing conditions or physical challenges.
April 2010 Senior Fit moved
to the Y from Munson Hospital
with 21 participants. As of
November 2015 there were
75 participants in 3 classes.

to support Senior Fit

Y STAFF Story
One of the participants, Mark Pitrago, is 57 years old. He started Senior Fit at
Munson Healthcare Cadillac and has continued with it at the Y. Mark suffers from MS.
He is the most inspirational person the class participants have met. We have all
learned not to tell Mark what he can or cant do. He determines what he is capable
of doing. He tries most everything even though his balance is affected and he is
legally blind. He loves to ride the bike. In 2014, he rode the bike 208 miles which he
did mainly half an hour at a time each day he comes. He also works several machines
and lifts weights. He keeps himself very strong.

Hello, I am Jesse. As of January 2016, I am

on my second year as a member of the
Y. Tuesday and Thursday yoga with Ellen
has been my weekly routine for all this time.
The childcare option is as helpful to me as
a stay at home mama. Yoga was part of my
life as a Peace Corps volunteer from 20012004 but I had not established another
routine since having my three girls. It is so
easy to get lost in motherhood and giving
all our time to our children and our partner
and our jobs....leaving very little time for
self-care. Taking this time for me has
helped me be more present in other areas
of my life. Having an hour of quiet focus is
so incredibly rare in my daily life. I want to
model self-care for my girls. Taking care of
ourselves should be our top priority. Other
things fall into place if we put ourselves
first and focus on the inner work we need to
do. The class is ideal for all people.

Jesse Guest-Felsk

He proves to us that even though you may have a physical complaint or pain, you
can still get up, workout and stay fit. He also proves that all this can be done with
a smile and a great attitude. He is an inspiration to us all. He lights up the
room when he comes to class.

Safety
Around Water

With all of the lakes in the area and the large

number of locations to swim, we are proud to kick
off the YMCA Safety Around Water program, which
is designed to teach children basic water safety
skills. Thanks to a Missaukee Area Community
Foundation grant and Lake City Area Schools making
it a priority to use time in their school day to address
this problem, we are making sure that every Lake
City child in fourth grade has access to learning
water safety skills.
I have been teaching YMCA swim lessons for 14
years and running our Y swim program for 13 years.
I have witnessed the benefits of 100s of children
learning swimming skills and how to be safe around
water. I think it is vital that all children have access
to a program like this and that we work together in
an effort to prevent another tragic drowning death.
Whatever we can do to help keep our children safe,
we need to work together to do it. This is why I
am so pleased to partner with a school to fight the
devastating problem of accidental drownings. This
program is designed to help reduce the number of
drownings by teaching children what to do if they
find themselves in the water unexpectedly.
This is a program that is much needed in our area to
keep our children strong and healthy. If you are
interested in finding out more information about this
program or ways that you can help please feel free
to contact me, annesz@cadillacareaymca.org or by
calling the Y and asking for me. Thank you so much
for all of the support thus far, and making the Y a
great place for community and family.

From young to old we had over 90 members participate in our

100 mile swim challenge for the 2015 year. 18 participants
completed the challenge this year, 4 more than last year.
Swimming is often viewed as an individual recreation, but
what is often missed is the comradery of the swimmers who
pushed each other and finished their goals together. At the
Y we recognize that anything we do takes perseverance and we
commend each member who completed this goal.

Swimming your first year holds many challenges.

When you join at 13, those challenges are
compounded by the distances required at that
age level. Tanaya Yonkman joined the team
facing these challenges. She began the year
swimming Freestyle and Backstroke in meets.
She worked hard developing these strokes,
and bettered her individual times in each stroke
by over 10 seconds. This alone was a great
accomplishment. However, what truly set her
apart in a year where we saw great improvement
across the team is her drive and tenacity to be
able to compete in all four strokes. Often she
would ask a coach to watch her stroke after
practice, and would always take the advice
of the coaches to heart. By the 5th meet, she
completed her first 100 Breaststroke. She
completed her goal on January 31st when she
competed in the Individual Medley. Although her
dedication is matched by many team members,
her focus and drive to meet her goal was an
inspiration to both swimmers and coaches alike.

Aquatic Timing System

Goal Achieved

Project Completion: 2015 held great accomplishments in our goal to acquire an

Aquatic Timing System. Through generous donations we are bringing closure to
our call to action. The new timing system and scoreboard should be up and installed
before the start of our 2016-17 swim season. The scoreboard chosen will be able to
communicate events, names of swimmers, swim times and places and link directly
to the electronic timing system. Overall, the system will support YMCA swim team
and masters swim program, as well as other competitive events held at the Cadillac
Area YMCA. We have received several donations throughout the campaign, and are
proud to announce that through the generosity of these gifts and a $26,000 gift
from Cadillac Mortgage, we are able to purchase the electronic scoreboard, the
most costly part of the timing system. This brings us to the same level as the other
pools where we compete. A huge thanks to each donor and especially Cadillac
Mortgage for their generous contributions and helping build a better us.

Our facility has been offering an Arthritis Foundation/

YMCA Aquatic Program for 6 years. This vital program that
improves the quality of life for those who suffer with
arthritis experienced a significant increase the number
of monthly participants when we introduced a new dropin format. The increased accessibility allows for greater
flexibility for our program participants and increases their
chances in a schedule that works better for them.

My Y Story
I have arthritis and began the arthritis aquatics program
a year ago at the YMCA. This program helped save my
life. I spent 2 years in a bed due to a rare disease and I also
have arthritis. I have lost 75lbs in the last year because I
can finally move again. But it was through this program.

Anyone Can Tri finishers, William age 11 and Wesley Gibson age 9, made up a
brother team. Wesley, who is blind, was aided in the competition by his brother in
both the bike and the run portion and his mother in the swim portion. William had
been inspired by a family friend who has similar abilities, he made his mind up
to give the Anyone Can Tri a chance and chose to do so with his brother Wesley
who is differently abled. One of their mottos as a family is to Focus on the abilities said Janet Gibson, the mother of the two boys. She has been encouraged
by what her two sons were able to accomplish by doing so.
