Excerpt from our Corporate Stance

on Water, adopted in 2005

For many of us in North America, it can be easy to lose sight of the

vital importance of water in our lives. It is easy to use water without
thinking much about it. After all, it is just water.
Sadly, many around the world cannot take water for granted.
And those without easy access to water are often in the poorest
communities. Lack of clean, accessible water often means lack of
access to other basic human rights as well. Helping to provide clean
water is about more than just water it is a matter of justice.
Please take a few moments to learn how we are working toward
the just sharing of water, and consider making a donation. Help us
make just water accessible to all.

justice.
Excerpt from Pope Francis encyclical letter,

Laudato Si: On Care for our Common Home

Since 2005, Sisters of Charity Halifax have donated more than $850,000 to water projects

in some of the poorest areas of our globe. Each of our projects includes an education component and
involvement of the local community. Local men and women become the caretakers of the water system
once the project is completed. This empowers communities, giving them the knowledge and confidence
that they can improve their standard of living, providing greater hope for the future.

Supporting Education through Water

The Misin T Puedes school serves approximately 365 students in
Nayayo, San Cristobal, about 35 kms northeast of Bani, Dominican
Republic. Before our water project, the school was dependent on an
unreliable municipal water system, and had no means of water storage.
The Sisters of Charity Halifax partnered with Hermandad Inc. to provide a dependable supply of clean,
accessible water to the school. A large concrete cistern was constructed and a rooftop storage tank,
pump and delivery system were installed. Water is now available for eight bathrooms in the school and
administrative buildings, and for cleaning.
Reliable access to water has significantly impacted the lives of the T Puedes students and teachers. It has
allowed for improved health and hygiene. They can now focus more on their education, and a brighter
future for the students and their community. Its just water.

Always a Need for

More Just Water
Our latest water project is located
in Comedero Ballo, a small village
in the Dominican Republic, near
the Haitian border. Through our
partnership with Hermandad Inc.,
a new water holding tank will be
built, fed by an existing well, and
45 homes in this area will receive
private taps. Currently, families
spread out over several kilometers
spend hours retrieving water from
a single hand pump. Those hours
can now be spent on improving
other areas of their lives.

Update on Los Corocitos

In our last appeal, we told you about our ongoing water project
in Los Corocitos, a farming village in the Dominican Republic.
This project built on an existing, partially-constructed water
system, and now provides greater access to water for 750
people in that community.
Thanks in part to your generous support of that appeal,
were pleased to report that the project is nearly complete!

Help us continue to support the

just sharing of water.
