Course Description:
The overall aims of the course are to acquaint students with the basic concepts of managing
manufacturing and service operations and its physical resources; mainly facilities, machines,
and equipments. The process of decision making concerning these operations and physical
resources is usually done through the Production and Operations Department. Effective
managers in the global era must realize the importance of operations quality and have the right
tools for making good choices for their business; hence they must realize that the most
important part of the business management is their awareness of production / operations basic
concepts.

By the end of the course, the student will be able to:


Knowledge & Understanding
a. Describe the operations function and the nature of the operations manager's job.
b. Discuss the phases in products / services design.
c. Describe approaches useful for evaluating capacity alternatives.
d. Describe the basic processing types and layout types.
e. Describe basic concepts of quality management and control.
f. Discuss product mix and optimal allocation of resources.
g. Define the terms: strategy, competitiveness, productivity, quality, etc..

Intellectual skills
a. Formulate and calculate productivity measures.
b. Analyze quality function deployment charts
c. Calculate efficiency and utilization of facilities and processing requirements.
d. Develop capacity alternatives using cost-volume analysis.
e. Select the right layout for the right process.
f. Perform production / assembly line balancing.
g. Calculate upper and lower control limits for quality management charts.
h. Model formulation of real business problems.

a. Make decisions related to the management of operations in a professional manner.


b. Develop a plan to increase productivity through the effective use of labor, capital,
and management.
c. Modify the production / operation department in order to improve the overall
