ClassDojo? Its free! Need to
communicate with parents WITHOUT
giving them your phone number?
ClassDojo is an immediate 2-way
communication tool for parents and
teachers. Did I mention its free? The
best part is that the communication is not
all negative. In fact, most will probably be
positive. Notice I said, Most, though.
There is always that oneParents can see

creating a more encouraging classroom
environment. It is a great classroom
management app for the iPad, iPhone, or
software for the computerANDthe best
part: YOU can CUSTOMIZE it for YOUR
classroom. Butthe very, very best part
is its free. Lets set it up and get started!
(Show Google Chrome picture)
First, open the web browser that you
prefer. I always use Google Chrome.
When the internet finally loads, you know
it takes a while sometimes, especially at
school, click in the address bar. Make sure
everything in the address bar is
highlighted. Then, you can just start
typing the web address.
Type www.classdojo.com and hit enter.
This will take you directly to the website,
as long as you type it right!
If you do not have an account already set
up, click on the blue sign up button. If you
already have an account, just sign in and
take a bathroom break while everyone
else sets up an account or if your with a
large group stroll around to make sure
everyone is caught up.
Once you have clicked on Sign Up, click on
teacher that s what you are! This will
take you to a screen where you will give
all kinds of personal information.
Go ahead and enter your first and last
name, email address, and password that
you want to use from now to eternity!
Finally, click join.
Find your school in the list and join the
host of other teachers at your school who
already use ClassDojo. Once again, click
join. Now, its time to add your class.
(class picture pops up)
So, click Add a class. This is where you
can get creative with your naming.
I am going to call my class Cabbells
Convicts, and for the record, I will add last
years students - real names will be

actually, for demonstration, Im going to
add some very famous movie stars - onto
the notebook paper graphic like this. (Type
in names to add). I am going to add Tom
Hardy, Tom Cruise, Denzel Washington,
Morris Chestnutt, Julia Roberts, Emma
Watson, Angelina Jolie, Zoe Kravitz, and
Charlize Theron. If you are typing each
name, do it now. (Play music like the
Jeopardy music) However, for those of you
who are really organized, you can just
import a class list. (Class list flips over.)
Or, click on
Lets stick that class list on in there! Click

next time you will have a class list ready
to import!

Click next to download PDF instructions so
parents can join you on ClassDojo. This is
a personal invitation with a number code
for each parent to connect to his or her
childs ClassDojo. (transition to an
invitation) This is Zoe Kratizs parent
invitation. See the parent and student
can now access ClassDojo. Just wait. You
will see why that is important later.
Print the PDF for
Dont forget you have to print the PDF
parents
for each student. You know how to print,
right? Just click the print button. And
obviously, you have to send it home!
Click Next and Done

send them home. Now you can finish
setting up Dojo.

23

Add negative
behaviors

24

Click on a students
name to give points

behaviors that you expect for students.

You can edit a behavior that is already
there. To do that, click on edit and type
the expected behavior. I am going to
make sure I have following directions,
great job, staying on task, and helping
others. Oh no, I ran out of places. Have
no fear I have a solution! Just add more.
You can have as many as you want
actually.
If there are more behaviors you want to
add, click on Add behavior. Type in the
desired behavior. I think I will add used
manners, working hard, participating, and
being an example for others. Finally, I just
want my kids to be nice to each other, so I
will type, Being Kind. Can you think of
others? Go aheadadd them! We
certainly cant be too positive.
When you have finished with the positive
behaviors, click on negative behaviors.
These are the behaviors that need
correcting. I bet you can think of a lot of
those!!
Again, you can edit any behaviors that are
already listed. I am going to change them
to out of seat, talking out of turn,
physically touching another student, and
disrespect. Uh ohout of space. Well
now, you know how to solve that problem.
Like the positive behaviors, add any
negative behaviors that you consistently
observe in your classroom. I will add
stealing I cant keep candy in my bucket
no homework, off task, talking in the
hallway, and many, many more.I think
you get the picture! Lets move on. Now
that we have our class and our behaviors
entered, lets start using ClassDojo.
(transition to class homepage)
Now, you are ready to begin, you can click
on a students name to give them a
positive point or a negative point. Lets
start with good ol Tom Hardy. Ever seen
the movie Legend? He was a bad
gangster. That is a negative behavior. So,

lets give him a mark for physically hitting

another. (Give the negative point). Listen
closelyDid you hear that? Not a very
pleasant sound. Lets now go to Julia
Roberts. Everyone loves when a Georgia
girl makes it big. So she gets a positive
point for great job. Listen closely again
(give positive point)Now that was better.
I would be so embarrassed to see my
name pop up with the negative point
sound.
When you select a behavior, there are
different sounds that represent positive
and negative you try it!
Finally, there is one last optional setup. If
you would like to reward groups of
students by seating chart or learning
teams that may work together, you can
create groups. First, click on groups.
Give the group a nameI am grouping
mine by how they sit in class. I will have
girls on one side and boys on the other (I
dont really, but I dont really have movie
stars in my class either). That way, I can
reward table groups when they show
exceptional behaviornot that they ever
do!
After giving your groups names, select the
students to join the groups. (Show how)
Now you can give points to whole groups
and not have to click so many individual
names. Watchwe all know that boys are
always better than girls when completing
work, so I am going to give the boys a
point for staying on task. See they all got
a point. And students can see how many
points they get beside their name. That
way they always see how many points
they have earned. The goal is for them to
really try to earn positive points.
When it is time to use Dojo, this is what
your screen will look like. (Show
homescreen) You have all of your students
entered and all of your groups set up. You
are ready to begin. Happy Dojoingand
may an exceptional class result for you!

Uses

Wellwere not quite finished yet.

Remember I said you could communicate
with parents? After parents have set up
their accountyou did remember to send
the invites home, right?...you can text
them and communicate with them
through Dojo. Actually, after parents set
up their account, they can get alerts
anytime students get points immediate
communication see Im sending a
message now to Tom Hardys parents to
let them know that he is headed for
trouble being a gangster. This is a great
way of communicating without giving out
your phone number.
Want to keep up the encouragement?
Add some pictures of the kids hard at
work or on a field trip. Simply click on
Class story. And upload a picture. See
watch this is how you do it. I will upload
this picture now (show picture). Parents
love to see what their little angel is up to.
Only those who are connected to your
class can see the pictures.
If youre always on the go, like me, you
rarely sit in front of the computer. Just
download the ClassDojo appits free
did I mention that?...to your phone. You
can find it in the app store for you device.
This is what the icon looks like on my
phone (show picture of phone homepage).
You have everything you need right there
in your hands.
You knowwe can never have a perfect
set up, right?...there are always those few
parents that wont set up an account. No
problemyou can download a report to
send homeweekly, daily, monthlyits
your choice. This is how you do it. Click
on reports. Choose a student. Click on
the students name and download. Dont
forget to print it. There is the report you
can send home and get signed.
Finallythat dreaded RTI (RTI letters pop
up)you know all that data you have to
collect. This is an easy way to keep track
