What is the purpose of a music video?

A music video combines audio with visuals. Videos are produced for promotional and artistic
purposes. Music videos are generally used as a marketing method in order to boost sales of a song.
The four main types of music video are: Performance, Narrative, Homage and Surrealism.
Performance entails the artist / band performing the song within the music video. Music videos that
follow a narrative are usually most popular as the visuals and audio interlink in order to portray a story.
A homage uses similar codes, conventions and techniques in order to respectfully copy a popular
song in honour of the artist / creator of the media text. A surrealist music video contains elements of
Performance, Narrative and Homage; these music videos use a wide variety of effects in order to
make the music video memorable.
What is a major record label, independent record label and a self promoted artist - what do
they do for artists?
The four biggest main record labels are considered Warner Music, Sony/BMG, Universal, and EMI. A
major record label can really benefit an artist when it comes promotion of their music. A major label
will have the money to provide huge promotional campaigns for the artists music in order to gain
more awareness therefore making them more money. An independent record label is usually set up
as an imprint of a major label. These smaller independent labels are usually owned by international
artists that want to help find and nurture new up and coming musical talent. A self promoted artist is
when an artist has no kind of record label in order to support them or fund promotional campaigns.
They find themselves performing many gigs in all types of venues. This will help the artist gain more
awareness and recognition for their work which could gain them a record label to sign onto.
What was the first music video ever made?
In 1956 Tony Bennett was filmed walking along The Serpentine in Hyde Park, London as his recording
of "Stranger in Paradise" played; this film was distributed to and played by UK and US television
stations, leading Bennett to later claim he made the first music video. Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody
(1975) is generally regarded as the first "music video". There are older films of groups/people
performing, but they were not made for the same purpose. When the song was released in the UK in
1975 the band were on tour and couldn't make it to Top of the Pops each week when it reached No.1.
No-one imagined the record would be so successful (at nearly 9 minutes long it was considered unradio-friendly, and they recorded the video to be played in their absence. At the time it was
revolutionary and people couldn't get enough of it.

MTV is an American basic cable and satellite television channel, which is a part of the Viacom Music
and Entertainment Group. The channel itself is based in New York City. Launched on August 1, 1981.
The original purpose of the channel was to play music videos guided by television personalities. The
network's current target audience is teenagers and young adults, with programming consisting mainly
of original reality, comedy and drama series. MTV's main target demographic is young adults, but
today, MTV's programming is primarily targeted at teenagers, high school students and college-aged
students.
What was the generational impact of MTV?
MTV are a generation of creators, entrepreneurs and innovators, and will drastically reshape this
country in terms of its cultural, commercial and civic spheres. In MTVs 2012 study, they explore the
creative ethos of Generation Innovation, what their creative process looks like, what systems they
are beginning to reshape and hypothesize about, and what a Millennial driven world will be like in 20
years. August 1, 1981 is the year MTV was founded. When the '80s ended, MTV adapted to the new
music of the '90s, like Seattle grunge bands Nirvana and Pearl Jam. The network also grew beyond
just videos, and created hit shows like "Beavis and Butthead," "The Real World," and "Unplugged."
How do the MTV viewing statistics change from now and compared to 2004?
Viewing Figures for MTV in January 2004 (12th-18th)

Viewing Figures from MTV in January 2016 (11th-17th)

In January 2004 MTV had an average daily reach of 2.80% compared to January 2016 the average
daily reach is 0.87%. This shows us that the average daily reach has dropped 1.93%. In January 2004
MTV had a weekly reach of 11.60% compared to the weekly reach in January 2016 where the weekly
reach is 4.30%. This shows us that the weekly reach has dropped 7.30% in the past 12 years. I
believe the main reason for the drop is views over the past 12 years is YouTube. Individuals want to
access their favourite artists music videos quickly and easily using their mobile phones where the
YouTube app can be downloaded. MTV doesnt provide this anymore as continuous ad breaks and
changing their focus to reality shows has seen a huge dip in their viewings over the past 12 years.

What are fake YouTube views, what is the impact of this?

Fake YouTube views are views that the owner of the video can buy to add more publicity to their video
and make it more popular. The impact this can have is that a music video with millions if not billions of
fake views could end up as a higher rank then others and become more popular then other videos,
which are more deserving of those views.

How much do artists earn from a sale on iTunes / CD / Spotify stream?

iTunes and Napster

In the popular digital realm, a $9.99 download on a program like iTunes nets artists a
modest 94 cents -- less than a 10% cut. The record company takes $5.35 and Apple
keeps the remaining $3.70.
Artists get nine cents for each individual song downloaded on Napster and iTunes. To
put that into perspective, musicians need to sell 12,399 songs a month to earn a
salary equal to a McDonalds employee.
Online CD Sales -- Who Wins
If they sell the physical CD themselves for $9.99, they keep 100% of the profits,
which is obviously the most profit-per-album a musician can hope for. But it's also
not the best way to reach the widest audience. Selling that same full $9.99 album
online through CDBaby means the website gets a cut to the tune of $2.49, while
artists get to keep the other $7.50 for a 75% profit.

Spotify
From a $10/month subscription, Spotify pays out with the same formula as iTunes (60% to master
owner, 10% to publishing owners, 30% for themselves).
