atmosphericusingvacuumpumps.Thisincreasestheeffective
stresswithoutgenerallyincreasingtheshearstresses.
VacuumconsolidationwasoriginallyproposedbyKjellman in
Swedeninthe1950s.

CONCLUSIONS
TheTCD/NRAvacuumpreloadingfieldtrialwas
implementedandshowedthatthistechnique
canbesuccessfullyusedinpeatsoils.
ThedrainagesystemcomprisingPVDs,
horizontaldrainsandagranularbed,was
effectiveindistributingtheappliedvacuum
pressureandcollectingthedrainedwater.
Practicaldifficulties/Observations
Summerconditionsgeneralwatertablewaslowerthan
sidebarrier.
Highersuctionsachievedwithvacuumpumpbutmore
stablevalueswithliquidringpump
Porepressurereductionatedgeswasslightlylower
(2kPato8.5kPa)thanatcentre.
PWProughlyuniformwithdepth
Vacuumpressureadequatelytransmittedin0.85mand
1.2mspacings.

Calcificationofpumpsasignificantissue
Freezing,tears,burstselectricalcutsaffectedthe
performance.
Airtightcovercouldbeimproved,useofwaterseal
shouldbeconsidered.
Vacuumconsolidationhadlittleeffectonthewater

Behaviourcanbesimulatedusingstandardsoilmodels.
