1. Az angol és az amerikanisztika szakon a második képzési szakaszt lezáró

szigorlatot a major paper/szigorlati dolgozat (a következőkben MP) megírása
jelenti.  The comprehensive examination that closes the second phase of
instruction for English and American Studies majors will involve the writing of a
major paper/szigorlati dolgozat (henceforth MP).

1.1. A MP-t a hatodik (sikeresen befejezett) szorgalmi időszak végén, a

vizsgaidőszak második hete után, az előre kihirdetett időpontra kell benyújtani a
hallgatóknak. Egyéni tanrenddel rendelkező hallgatók dolgozatuk leadási
határidejével kapcsolatban keressék fel az MP Bizottság elnökét.  Students shall
submit their MPs at the end of their sixth (successfully completed) semester
following the second week of the exam period by a date to be posted sufficiently in
advance. Students on an individual schedule must contact the chair of the MP
Committee regarding the submission date for their MP.

1.2. A MP benyújtásának az a feltétele, hogy a hallgató a benyújtáskor

rendelkezzen a) 4 nyelvészeti kurzusból b) 2 irodalmi és 2 történelmi-
művelődéstörténeti áttekintő kurzusból sikeres vizsgával.  As a prerequisite for
submitting the MP, students shall have successfully completed a) four courses in
linguistics and b) two survey courses each in literature and history/cultural history.

1.3.1. Amennyiben a dolgozat nyelvészetből készül, a kötelező 4 áttekintő

kurzuson kívül végezzen el a harmadik év végéig 3 nyelvészeti kurzust, melyek
közül legalább egy szeminárium.  If the subject of the MP is linguistics, its writer
shall have completed three courses in linguistics by the end of the third year, of
which at least one shall be a seminar, in addition to the four compulsory survey
courses.

1.3.2. Amennyiben a dolgozat irodalomból készül, a kötelező 2 áttekintő irodalom

kurzuson kívül végezzen el 3 irodalmi kurzust, melyek közül legalább egy
szeminárium.  If the subject of the MP is literature, its writer must complete
three courses in literature, of which at least one shall be a seminar, in addition to
the two compulsory literary survey courses.

1.3.3. Amennyiben a dolgozat történelemből vagy művelődéstörténetből készül,

a kötelező 2 ilyen tárgyú áttekintő kurzuson kívül végezzen el 3 történelmi-
művelődéstörténeti kurzust melyek közül legalább egy szeminárium.  If the
subject of the MP is history or cultural history, its writer must complete three
courses in history/cultural history, of which at least one shall be a seminar, in
addition to the two compulsory survey courses in that field.

1.3.4. Összefoglalva: aki nyelvészetből kíván MP-t írni, annak 7 nyelvészeti

kurzust, 2 irodalmi kurzust és 2 történelmi-művelődéstörténeti kurzust kell
elvégeznie. Aki irodalomból kíván MP-t írni, annak 4 nyelvészeti kurzust, 5
irodalmi kurzust és 2 történelmi-művelődéstörténeti kurzust kell elvégeznie. Aki
történelemből vagy művelődéstörténetből akar MP-t írni, annak a hallgatónak 4
nyelvészeti, 2 irodalmi és 5 történeti-művelődéstörténeti kurzust kell elvégeznie
ahhoz, hogy beadhassa a MP-t.  In summary, before they can submit their MPs,
students wishing to write MPs in linguistics must have completed seven courses
in linguistics, two in literature, and two in history/cultural history; those wishing
to write MPs in literature must have completed four courses in linguistics, five in
literature, and two in history/cultural history; and those wishing to write MPs in
history or cultural history must have completed four courses in linguistics, two in
literature, and five in history/cultural history.

2. A major paper formai követelményei  Formal requirements of the

Major Paper

2.1. A MP-t számítógépen nyomtatva kell beadni. Terjedelme 30,000-46,000

karakter szóközök nélkül (ez kb. 6000-9000 szó másfeles sorközű oldalakon,
melybe nem tartozik bele az elemezni kívánt szöveg bemutató jellegű hosszabb
idézése) + összefoglalás (abstract) + apparátus. A dolgozat bibliográfiája legalább
tíz szakirodalmi tételt tartalmazzon, melyből legalább egy folyóirat publikáció. 
The MP must be submitted computer-printed. It must be 30-46 thousand
characters in length without spaces (this amounts to approx. 6000-9000 words
with 1.5 spacing, and does not include lengthy illustrative quotations from the
text to be analysed) in addition to an abstract, notes, appendices, and a
bibliography. The bibliography for the MP must contain at least ten items of
relevant specialized literature, of which at least one must be a periodical article.

2.2. A dolgozat az Angol-Amerikai Intézet által elfogadott Style Sheet

útmutatásának megfelelően készüljön.  The MP must be written in accordance
with the instructions in the Style Sheet adopted by the Institute of English and
American Studies.

2.3. A MP-t kettő példányban kell leadni az Intézeti Irodában a megadott

határidőre. A dolgozathoz mellékelni kell annak elektronikus szövegváltozatát
floppy lemezen (Word 97 által olvasható formátumban). A dolgozat file
elnevezését a lemezen is fel kell tüntetni, a következő formában: név.szak.dátum
(pl. NagyKatalin.Eng.2005.12.25 vagy NagyEndre.Am.2006.06.25). A dolgozatot
elektromos formában, az értékelésekkel együtt, az Intézet öt évig archiválja. 
The MP must be submitted in two copies to the office of the Secretary of the
Institute by the official deadline. The electronic version of the MP must also be
enclosed on a floppy disc (in a format readable by Word 97). The name of the file
should also be indicated on the disc in the following format: name.major.date
(e.g. BrownRobert.Eng.2005.12.25 or BrownRobert.Am.2006.06.25). One copy of
the paper, together with the evaluations, will be held in the electronic archives of
the Institute for five years.

2.4. A MP beadását nem lehet elhalasztani. A határidő elmulasztása esetén a MP

érdemjegye automatikusan elégtelen, és az újbóli beadásra csak mint utóvizsga
van lehetőség.  Submission of MPs cannot be postponed. A failure to meet the
deadline shall result in an automatic fail grade (1) and can only be submitted again
as a re-sit.

3. A major paper témájának a kiválasztása  Choosing the topic of the

3.1. A MP-hez az oktatók által adott javaslatok alapján a választható témakörök
listáját a MP Committee állítja össze. A listát minden év február végéig a bizottság
közzéteszi. Ezzel egyidőben közöl a bizottság a MP-rel kapcsolatos minden egyéb
határidőt is.  The list of eligible MP topics based on teachers’ proposals will be
drawn up by the MP Committee. The Committee will post the list every year by the
end of February. The Committee will simultaneously post all other deadlines
associated with the MP.
A MP-nek a MP Committee által jóváhagyott külső vezetője is lehet. A témavezetés
biztosítása a dolgozat témája szerinti tanszék vezetőjének felelőssége.  MPs can
be supervised by persons who are not on the faculty of the Institute if approved by
the MP Committee. It shall be the responsibility of the head of the department in
which the MP topic falls to provide a supervisor.

3.2. A dolgozat témáját három fő szakmai területről lehet választani: 1) nyelvészet

és alkalmazott nyelvészet, 2) irodalom, 3) történelem-művelődéstörténet.  The
topic of the MP can be chosen from among the following three fields: 1) linguistics
and applied linguistics, 2) literature, 3) history/cultural history.

3.3. A szakmai testület által közzétett témákból a második évüket végző

hallgatóknak az adott tanévben kell kiválasztaniuk MP témájukat, és a
választásukról nyilatkozatot kell tenniük három példányban (major paper
contract). ). Az eredeti példányt az intézeti előadóhoz (Intézeti Irodába), a
második példányt a témavezetőhöz juttassák el. A harmadik példány a
hallgatónál marad. A szerződés leadása a MP beadásának feltétele.  Students
completing their second year must choose their MP topic, within that academic
year, from the list posted by the Committee, and must declare their choice by
signing a Major Paper Contract in three copies. The original copy shall go to the
Secretary of the Institute (in the Institute Office), the second to the supervisor. The
third copy is kept by the student. Submitting the contract is a prerequisite for
submitting the MP.

3.3.1. A MP-rel kapcsolatos eljárási kérdésekkel a MP Committee elnökét keressék

meg, akinek nevét a témák meghirdetésekor ugyancsak közzéteszik.  All
procedural questions shall be addressed to the chair of the MP Committee, whose
name will be announced when the list of topics is posted.

3.4. A MP témájának megváltoztatását csak rendkívüli esetben lehet kérni,

legkésőbb a hatodik félév első hetének végéig.  A change of MP topic can be
requested only in extraordinary cases, no later than the end of the first week of the
sixth semester.

4. A major paper elkészítése  Writing the Major Paper

4.1. A dolgozat elkészítésében a hallgató által felkért tanár segítséget nyújt, és az

elkészült dolgozatnak ő lesz az egyik bírálója.  The teacher chosen by the
student as his/her supervisor shall provide assistance in writing the paper, and
s/he shall be one of the readers of the MP when it is completed.

4.1.1. Egy oktató nem vállalhatja tanévenként hatnál több MP vezetését. Ph.D.
hallgatók három dolgozat témavezetését vállalhatják. A választható tanárok
személyét illetően a témákat tartalmazó felsorolás ad támpontokat.  No teacher

can supervise more than six MP writers in an academic year. PhD students can
supervise three Major Papers. The list of topics will indicate the eligible teachers.

4.2. A dolgozat munkálatairól célszerű a témavezető tanárral folyamatosan

konzultálni. Kötelezően félévente egyszer kell megkeresni a vezető tanárt a
teendők megbeszélése végett.  It is advisable for the student to consult his/her
supervisor regularly on the progress of the paper. The student shall meet the
supervisor at least once a semester to discuss tasks to be carried out.

4.3. A MP értékelésre leadott változatában szerepeljen egy 2. címlap, amely

dokumentálja a beadás feltételeinek teljesítését (feltételek: kötelezően választható
órák, konzultációk, valamint a dolgozat első, 2.000 szavas változatának leadása a
témavezetőnek március 31-ig). Tartalmazzon a dolgozat egy 200-300 szavas
összefoglalást is (abstract) magyar és angol nyelven. Külföldi hallgatóknak nem
kell magyar nyelvű összefoglalást írniuk.  The version of the MP submitted for
assessment must contain a second title page documenting fulfilment of the
prerequisites for submission (namely, compulsory optional classes completed,
consultations, and previous submission to the supervisor of a 2000-word version by
31st March). The MP shall include an abstract of 200-300 words both in English and
in Hungarian. International students are exempted from including an abstract in
Hungarian.

5. A major paper értékelése  Assessing the Major Paper

5.1. A MP-t ketten értékelik (double reading). Az egyik bíráló a vezető tanár, a
másik bíráló a szakmai testület által felkért szakértő. A hallgató témaválasztását a
MP Committee hagyja jóvá, és a második bírálót is a testület jelöli ki. Az
értékeléseket a bírálóknak e-mailen, a Bizottság által meghatározott időpontra, az
elnök által megadott címre kell elküldeni, egyenként, csatolt file-ban, a következő
megjelöléssel: hallgató.bíráló.olvasói minősége.dátum (pl.
NagyKatalin.KA.sup.2005.12.26 vagy KisLilla.SZGYE.2read.2006.01.22), egy
nyomtatott példányt pedig a dolgozathoz csatolva (címlap mögé) kell
visszajuttatni az Intézeti Irodába.  The Major Paper shall be read by two readers
(double reading). One of the readers will be the supervisor (sup), the other the
second reader (2read) approved by the MP Committee. The student’s choice of
topic must be approved by the MP Committee, and the second reader will be
appointed by the same body. The evaluations must be submitted via e-mail by the
date set by the Committee to the address provided by the chair; each evaluation
must be sent individually as an attachment, marked as follows: student’s
name.reader’s initials.reader type.date (e.g. BrownRobert.KA.sup.2005.12.26 or
KisLilla.SZGYE.2read.2006.01.22). One printed copy should be placed behind the
cover page of the MP and returned to the Institute Office.

5.1.1 A MP-t nem értékelik, ha nincs aláírva a 2. címlap. Ebben az esetben a

dolgozat elégtelen.  The Major Paper shall not be read if it does not contain a
second title page signed by the advisor. In this case the grade for the MP shall be
a 1 (fail).

5.2.1. A bírálat során adódó vitás kérdéseket a MP Committee dönti el. Ha a két
bíráló által adott pontkülönbség 9 vagy több, illetve ha az egyik bíráló megbuktatja
a dolgozatot, a MP Committee harmadik bírálót jelöl ki, aki az eljárás végéig anonim
marad. Ebben az esetben a három olvasó által adott pontszámok átlaga duplázódik,
a jegy megállapítására úgy kerül sor (az esetleg szükséges kerekítés elvégzése
után).  The questions raised during the assessment shall be decided by the MP

Committee. If the difference between the scores of the two readers is nine or more,
or if one of the readers fails the paper, the MP Committee shall appoint a third
reader, who shall remain anonymous until the end of the procedure. In such cases
the grade shall be established by doubling the average of the scores given by the
three readers and rounding that number off.

5.3. Az értékelt dolgozat mindkét példányát az eredmény kihirdetése után a

hallgató visszakapja.  Both copies of the assessed paper will be returned to the
student after the results are posted.

5.4. A MP eredménye a leckekönyvben angol illetve amerikanisztika szigorlatként

lesz bejegyezve.  The grade for the Major Paper shall be entered in the gradebook
as the szigorlat for English and/or American Studies.

5.5. Amennyiben a hallgató évismétlésre kényszerül, valamely kötelező vizsgája

nem sikerül, illetve bármilyen tanulmányi kötelezettség elmulasztása miatt a
szigorlati jegy nem lehet érvényes, úgy az értékelt MP és az arra adott érdemjegy
függőben marad, és akkor válik érvényessé, ha a hallgató a fenti kötelezettségeket
teljesítette.  If the student is obliged to repeat the year, or fails a compulsory
examination, and/or fails to fulfil any academic obligations, the assessed MP and
the grade given shall be suspended until these obligations have been fulfilled.

6. Az értékelés módja  The method of assessment

6.1. Mindkét értékelő 20-20 pontot adhat a dolgozatra.  Each of the two readers
can give the Paper a maximum of 20 points.

6.1.1. Az értékelés a MP Committee által javasolt és az Intézeti Tanács által

elfogadott szempontrendszer alapján történik (lásd az 1.sz. mellékletet).  The
assessment shall be made according to the grading policy proposed by the MP
Committee and adopted by the Institute Council (see Appendix 1).

6.1.2. A MP bírálója az általa adott pontszámhoz 6-10 soros szöveges értékelést is

fűz, a pontszámot a megadott szempontrendszer szerint való lebontásban
részletezve. Akkor is szükséges az értékelés és a teljes pontszám, ha a dolgozat
formai szempontból 0 pontot kap. The reader shall suupplement the points with a
6- to 10-line summary of his/her conclusions, and a breakdown of the final score
according to the grading policy table. The evaluation and the total score must be
indicated even if the paper receives 0 for format.

6.2. A két egymástól függetlenül keletkezett pontszámot összegezzük.  The two

independently generated scores shall be added up.

6.3. Összesen 40 pontot lehet elérni és ennek alapján a következőképpen számítjuk

át a pontokat jegyekre  The maximum number of points to be given is 40, and the
points shall be converted into grades in the following way:
36-40 = jeles/excellent
31-35 = jó/good
24-30 = közepes/average
18-23 = elégséges/pass
0-17 = elégtelen/fail

6.4. Ha egy dolgozat nem kapott összesen legalább 18 pontot, a dolgozat
érdemjegye elégtelen. Ebben az esetben a hallgató beadhatja a dolgozatot
utóvizsgaként. A nem formai hiányosság miatt bukott dolgozat az eredmény
kihirdetése után minimum két hét elteltével adható be ismét.  If a Paper is not
given at least 18 points altogether, its final grade shall be a 1 (fail). In such cases,
the student in question can submit the Paper again as a re-sit. Papers which fail for
reasons other than formal problems may be re-submitted no sooner than 2 weeks
after the results are posted.

Grading Policy for Major Papers
ASPECT POINTS
Concept & research design: clearly legitimated objective; 0-1-2-3
feasibility in relation to the given scope and limitations;
Argumentation: structure and coherence of argument; argued 0-1-2-3-4-
introduction (incl. review of sources) and conclusion; relevance of 5-6
internal divisions and that of secondary research questions;
systematic use of theoretical concepts.
Use of referred materials: clearly established relation between 0-1-2-3-4-
the candidate and the employed literature; proportion of quoted 5-6
material to main text; research background (adequacy of
references, size of reading list, differentiation of primary and
secondary literature). [If a “0” is given in this category due to
plagiarism, the paper is automatically referred to the MP
Committee.]
Format (as modelled on the Institute Style Sheet): length, 0-1-2
citation/ bibliography consistency; abstract; notation;
bibliography; illustrations; appendices, proof-reading, spelling. [If
this aspect is marked “0” by any of the readers, the paper is
automatically referred to the MP Committee.]
Language: clarity of expression; style and rhetoric; 0-1-2-3
syntax/grammar. [If this aspect is marked 0, the paper will be
referred to the MP Committee.]
Fraction (half) points are not allowed.
