(A.A.)threehoursperweek.Prerequisite:ENC1101orappropriatescoreonEnglishplacementtest.Collegelevel
readingandwriting.ENC1101helpspreparestudentsforacademicworkbyemphasizingexpositorywriting,the
basicsoflibraryresearch,andtheconventionsofacademicdiscourse.Thecourseemphasizesargument,research,
andstyle.Throughitsemphasisonthinkingrhetorically,providingevidenceforassertions,creativethinking,and
writingasaprocess,1102willpreparestudentsforargumentandresearchbasedwritinginacademicsettings.Both
ENC1101andENC1102explorethefoundationsofknowledgeandlearningasoutlinedbyUSF'sGeneral
EducationPlan.Bothcoursesteachstudentslearntothinkrhetorically,tounderstandandemployavarietyof
writingstrategies,toconductresearch,andtointerpret,critique,summarize,andparaphrasetexts.Thiscourse

ThiscoursemeetstheFloridaStateBoardofEducationRuleNumber6A10.30.Inaccordancewiththisrule,
studentswillcompletesixsemesterhoursofEnglishandsixsemesterhoursofadditionalcourseworkinwhichthe
studentmustdemonstratecollegelevelwritingskills.AgradeofCorbetterisrequiredforcreditinGordonRule
classes.

COURSEGOALS
Communication
Preparestudentsforrealworldsituationsthatrequirepowerfulandeffectiveoralandwrittencommunicationin
traditionalandemergentmedia.

Developcritical,constructive,andreflectivethinkerswhoanalyze,interpret,evaluate,anddecidewhattobelieve

Studentswilldemonstratecomposingprocessesthroughprewriting,drafting,revising,andeditingindividually
andwithpeersinarangeofmedia.
Studentswilldemonstraterhetoricalknowledgebyfocusingonaudience,purpose,context,genre,medium,and

Revision:Currentwritingtheoryandpracticeadvocatesaprocessapproachtowritinginwhichrevisionofwriting
overmultipledraftsisamajorcomponent.Ineachofthemajorpaperassignments,youwillcompletesubsequent
drafts.Afterthecompletionofanindividualdraft,youwillreceiverevisionassignmentsthatyoumustfollowand

Thereadingannotationsaredue10pmthenightbeforeclass.Anannotationssummarizesandinterpretswhata
researcherhasread.Whilereadingresearch,researcherswriteannotationstohelpthemmakeconnections
betweentexstandtointerpretthattextintheirownwords.Inthisclasswewillgetusetheannotationgenretohelp
usputwhatwe'vereadinourownwordsandtoshowwhywhatwe'vereadisimportant.Seemoduleonefor
instructionsonhowtowriteanannotation.

ResearchProject
ResearchProject(withOralPresentation):Thisisamultipartprojectconsistingofaprojectproposal(about200
wordsinformal,partofyourplanning),aneightitemannotatedbibliography(minimum2,000wordsincluding
bibliographiccitations),scholarlyarticlesummary,roughdrafts,andafinaldraftproposal/researchessay(minimum
3,000words)plusreferencespage.Additionally,basedonsecondaryresearch,youwillconductprimaryresearch
andberesponsibleforproposingaresearchtool,collectingprimarydata,andrepresentingthatdatainaposterand
finalpaper.Youwillchooseaproblemthatisimportantorinterestingtoyouandproposeasolutiontoit.Then,you
willresearch/exploreanddevelopanorganized,coherentargumentthatisdefendedwithevidencefromatleast
eightexternalsources,includingbooks,articles,essays,videos,surveysorpolls,interviews,crediblewebsites.The
USFlibraryshouldserveasyourprimaryresource.Wikipedia,funthoughitmaybe,isnotacrediblesourceand
shouldbeusedforexplorationpurposesonly,notasadocumentedsource.You'llbeusingAPAformatand
documentation.Throughoutthisproject,you'lldevelopathesisandofferasolutiontoyourtopic,supportingyour
claimswithpublished,authoritativeinformation.
