Components of Business
Environment?

A. Internal environment
Internal environment includes all those factors which influence
business and which are present within the business itself. These
factors are usually under the control of business. The study of
internal factors is really important for the study of internal
environment. These factors are:
(i) Objectives of Business, (ii) Policies of Business, (iii)
Production Capacity, (iv) Production Methods, (v) Management
Information System, (vi) Participation in Management, (vii)
Composition of Board of Directors, (viii) Managerial Attitude,
(ix) Organisational Structure, (x) Features of Human Resource,
etc.
Note:
All the above factors do influence the decisions of business, but
since all these factors are usually under the control of business,
they cannot be wholly included in the business environment.
B. External Environment
External environment includes all those factors which influence
business and exist outside the business. Business has no control
over these factors. The information about these factors is
important for the study of the external environment.
For example, when the Pepsi Cola Company used the slogan of
Come Alive in their advertisement then the people of a
particular region misinterpreted the word Come Alive as they
assumed it means Coming out of Graves. So, they condemned
the use of the product and there was no demand of Pepsi Cola in
that region. So, the company had to change its advertisement
slogan as it cannot survive in market by ignoring the sentiments
of the people.
In India also, there are many Social reforms taking place and
the common factors of Indian Social Environment are:
(a) Demand for reservation in jobs for minority and women
(b) Demand for equal status of women by paying equal wages
for male and female workers
(c) Demand for automatic machines and luxury items in middle
class families
(d) The social movements to improve the education level of girl
child.
(e) Health and Fitness trend has become popular.
Some Aspects of Social Environment:
1. Quality of life
2. Importance or place of women in workforce
2. Consumerism:
Voluntary Consumer Organisations engaged in organising
consumers and encouraging them to safeguard their interests is
another important element of consumer movement. It is an
organised movement of the consumers, which aims at
protecting them from malpractices.
Today consumers are aware of their rights. This has forced the
businessman to change their attitude towards business.
Consumer must be aware of his rights, raise voice against
exploitation and seek redressal of his grievances. Hence
consumerism is again the factor responsible for changing face of
business.
3. Increase in competition:
Competition gives incentive for improvement. Competition in
commercial activity is increased tremendously due to
globalisation. Today the consumers have more and better choice
and options to buy than ever before.
Globalisation has facilitated for increasing exports. This has
given a competitive advantage to the domestic exporters. This
entry of domestic exporters in international trade is responsible
for changing face of business.
6. Improvement in Performance:
With continuous scan of Business environment companies can
easily improve their performance. By making changes in the
internal environment matching to external environment,
organisations can prosper and improve their market share. For
example,
Weston Company which could not cooperate with the changing
environment started suffering loss and lost its name in T.V.
market whereas BPL, Onida, etc. did scan the environment well
and are still competing successfully with many multinational
companies.
