Creating a Web Using Microsoft Word


• Make sure that the Drawing Toolbar is showing on your screen. To turn it on,
select View – Toolbars – Drawing.
• Make sure your page is set up using the Landscape format (File – Page Setup –
Paper Size – Landscape).
• Select the Oval icon at the bottom of the screen and draw a large oval in the center
of the page.

• Add a title, phrase, or question to your web using:


o WordArt (tilted blue “A” on the Drawing Toolbar) to add in a title to your web.

- OR -

o Text Box (Insert – Text Box). Your cursor will change to a + sign. To create
your text box, click and drag your cursor.
 Move your text box to within the oval by clicking and dragging it.
 Readjust the size as needed by clicking on the edge of the text box and
then clicking on one of the white squares that appear.

 To remove the border from the edge of the text box, double-click on the
edge of the text box. A window will appear. Go to Line - Color and
click on the arrow next to the black rectangle. Then, select “No Line.”
 Format the text within your text box as you wish (bold, italics, font
size, centered, etc.)

• Add “legs” to your web


o Select the Line icon on the Drawing tool bar
o Your cursor will become a + sign. Place the center of the + sign onto the edge
of the oval and drag it outwards to draw a line.
o Repeat this process as many times as you wish. You will need to select the
Line icon for each line that you draw.

In order to make it easy for you to move your web around the page, it’s best for you to
GROUP your drawing (this makes all the individual parts of a drawing linked together
so that they move as one unit). This works especially well if you want to copy and
paste your web to create another one.

To Group,
o Select each element of your drawing by clicking once on the oval, the WordArt or
text box, and each leg.
o Go to Draw – Group (on your Drawing Toolbar).
o Click anywhere on the web and try to drag it – it should all move as one unit. If
not, then you’ll need to click all elements and then go to Draw – Group again.
o You can also ungroup your drawing (Draw – Ungroup) if you decide you want to
change something.
