In2001,TheBostonGlobehiresaneweditor,MartyBaron.BaronmeetsWalter"Robby"Robinson,the
editoroftheSpotlightteam,asmallgroupofjournalistswritinginvestigativearticlesthattakemonthsto
researchandpublish.AfterBaronreadsaGlobecolumnaboutalawyer,MitchellGarabedian,whosays
thatCardinalLaw(theArchbishopofBoston)knewthatthepriestJohnGeoghanwassexuallyabusing
childrenanddidnothingtostophim,heurgestheSpotlightteamtoinvestigate.JournalistMichael
RezendescontactsGarabedian,whoinitiallydeclinesinterview.Thoughheistoldnotto,Rezendesreveals
thatheisontheSpotlightteam,persuadingGarabediantotalk.
Initiallybelievingthattheyarefollowingthestoryofonepriestwhowasmovedaroundseveraltimes,the
SpotlightteambegintouncoverapatternofsexualabuseofchildrenbyCatholicpriestsinMassachusetts,
andanongoingcoverupbytheBostonArchdiocese.Throughamanwhoheadsavictim'srights
organization,theywidentheirsearchtothirteenpriests.Theylearnthroughanexpriestwhoworkedat
tryingtorehabilitatepaedophileprieststhatthereshouldbeapproximatelyninetyabusivepriestsinBoston
(sixpercentofpriests).Throughtheirresearch,theydevelopalistofeightysevennames,andbegintofind
theirvictimstobackuptheirsuspicions.WhentheSeptember11attacksoccur,theteamisforcedto
deprioritizethestory.TheyregainmomentumwhenRezendeslearnsfromGarabedianthatthereare
publiclyavailabledocumentsthatconfirmCardinalLawwasawareoftheproblemandignoredit.Although

Spotlightteamfinallybeginstowritethestory,andplantopublishtheirfindingsinearly2002.
Astheyareabouttogotoprint,Robinsonconfessestotheteamthathewassentalistoftwentypedophile
priestsin1993inastoryheneverfollowedupon.Baron,nevertheless,tellsRobinsonandtheteamthatthe
worktheyaredoingisimportant.Thestorygoestoprintwithalinkleadingtothedocumentsthatexpose
CardinalLaw,andaphonenumberrequestingvictimsofpedophileprieststocomeforward.Thefollowing
morning,theSpotlightteamisinundatedwithphonecallsfromvictimscomingforwardtotelltheirstories.
