Stratamodel R2003.12 Release Notes

Landmark

Introduction
Stratamodel 2003.12 conforms with Landmark 2003.12 release standards and is integrated with
other product changes in the Landmark 2003.12 release. The default POSC RESCUE version for
Stratamodel 2003.12 output data is updated to be compatible with Powermodel 2003.12. (You can
create POSC RESCUE data in a lower version by using the USE_RESCUE_VERSION
environment variable as described in Overriding the Default POSC RESCUE Version on
page 17).
In addition, many changes have been made to the StrataMap application, as described in the
following topic.

Enhancements in StrataMap
This topic highlights some of the changes in the StrataMap application.
StrataMap Main Window The mapping area has moved from the StrataMap window to the
Map View dialog box. As a result, the workflow buttons are always available in the main window.
The number of workflows has been reduced, with three workflows now accessible as functions in
the optimum interface for performing themthe Fault Framework Map dialog box.
It is standard practice to always use the first four workflows to create and begin refining a
framework. You can use the last two workflows, if necessary, to adjust the input data to match well
point values or fill void areas. To use the three workflow functions that have moved out of the main
window, focus on a fault in the Fault Framework Map dialog box, then select options from the MB3
menu to change the faults extension, merge the fault with another fault, or use the fault to split
another fault.

Menu Options The menus and menu options in the StrataMap window have been
extensively reorganized to be more intuitive (as listed in the table Changes in StrataMap
Option Names on page 3). For example:
The Form Entire Horizon function has moved from the Framework Events Status dialog
box to the Framework Operations > Operations menu.
The Save Framework function has moved from Framework Status menu to the File menu.

Gridding The Global Gridding method can now handle any size pointset, and is used by
default in almost all cases. As a result, StrataMap produces better quality grids that extend over
the entire AOI. To provide the edge control needed in some cases, two new Boundary settings
are available, Shell and Same Coverage. Selecting Same Coverage preserves the current grids
coverage, which is useful for recalculating patches in a framework.

Editors The Surface Shape Editor is improved to facilitate tracking profiles as you move
the edit area. The polygon type of editing area has been eliminated. The Points Editor is
modified to improve profile track focus.
Both Editors become active once you perform a Form Entire Horizon operationenabling you
to edit the current fault block portion of the horizon in context with its neighbors. This makes
it easier to obtain the appropriate fault throws between fault blocks.

Profile Display In Profile Display, a new toggling button (and MB3 menu option) enables
you to show or hide the original faults when you view portions of surfaces created for
individual fault blocks. This makes it easy to see the results of Erase & Extend operations and
eliminate clutter. In addition, you can rotate the line of section (LOS) by using an MB3 menu
option in Profile Display.

Map View In Map View, a new toggling option in the MB3 menu enables you to show or
hide intersection points. A new option in the DISPLAY Contents dialog box enables you to
quickly show or hide borders annotated with grid values.

Framework Events Status New options are available for creating different types of point
subsets in the Framework Events Status dialog box.

View-Only Surfaces If you display view-only surfaces as overlays and want to manually
override the settings, new color options are available for displaying horizons and faults, and for
displaying a surface as a black line.

Workflow Documentation New step-by-step instructions are included for the main
workflows. The documentation also has advice about editing data before and after you produce
a framework.

DSB Record Layout Formats Changes have been made in the supported record layout
formats for data schema block (.dsb) files.

Changes in StrataMap Option Names

If you last used StrataMap in the 2003.0 release, you will discover that in release 2003.12, many
of the options are slightly renamed and have moved to other menus. The following table is a guide
to finding the 2003.0 options in the 2003.12 StrataMap window.

Permissions Needed to Install Release 2003.12

Install Release 2003.12 as root. Use the command su - root and not su to get to root so you do
not inherit permissions and environments from any login except root. For a successful installation,
you must have write permission for the target directory. If you have write permissions for some
files, but not others, the installation cannot remove all the old files. The resulting combination of
old and new files compromises the installation.
If you install OpenWorks as root and want to install Stratamodel or other products later as non-root,
you must set full permissions on the following OpenWorks directories.
$OWHOME/bitmaps and its contents
$OWHOME/revisions
$OWHOME/templates and its contents
$OWHOME/lib

Steps for Installing Components

As outlined below (and described fully in the OpenWorks Installation Procedures - Release
2003.12), it is important to install the components in the proper order. Do not install Stratamodel
until you have completed all the preparatory steps.
1. Install PreOracle.
2. Install Oracle.
3. Install Landmark licensing. (See the notes that follow.)
4. Install OpenWorks.
5. Install Acrobat Reader. (Before installing Stratamodel you must load Adobe Acrobat Reader.)
If you do not install the Reader, you cannot display online help documents.
6. Install Stratamodel.
Installing Stratamodel as a Standalone Application
If you install Stratamodel as a standalone application, installation steps 3 and 5 must precede step 6.

Getting Licenses
Stratamodel incorporates FLEXlm license management software from Globetrotter, which uses
software versioning in the license file (license.dat). (On Linux systems, FLEXlm 7.2g is used. On
Sun and SGI, FLEXlm 7.2e is used.) This feature prevents previous license files from working with
the new installation. You must get a new license.dat file from your Landmark representative before
you can execute Stratamodel 2003.12.
When you request a license, make sure you have the host ID for your system or systems (servers
and clients) as well as server host names. To obtain a host ID, use the sysdef command on a Sun
system or use the lmhostid command on a Linux or SGI system. Make sure you supply the host
ID number in the proper format. (For more information, see the License Application Manager
topic in the document OpenWorks Installation Procedures - Release 2003.12.)
Stratamodel includes these individually licensed products:
Stratamodel
StrataMap
StrataMap - Framework Builder
StrataSim
Badleys FSA
(RC)2 Geostatistics
A full-featured Stratamodel license file (license.dat) contains these feature lines:
SGM, SGMMAP, SGMSIM, SGMFSA, SGMRC2GEOSTATS, and SGMMAPFWB.
For complete license installation and configuration information, see the FLEX License Manager
CD-ROM.

Installing Stratamodel
You can use the installation CD-ROM to install Stratamodel regardless of whether you have
installed OpenWorks. If your system does not have OpenWorks, installing Stratamodel is different
in three important respects: the location of the Stratamodel installation directory during
installation, the location of the Stratamodel license file and related licensing issues, and the process
for initializing Stratamodel.
For complete information about mounting the CD-ROM and installing Stratamodel, please refer to
the OpenWorks Installation Procedures - Release 2003.12.
After you install the software, read Initializing Stratamodel on page 13.
If you have access to OpenWorks user documentation, see the Upgrading OpenWorks and other
Applications section in the OpenWorks System Administration: Installing OpenWorks guide, and
the Managing the License System section in the OpenWorks: Managing the System guide.
Limitations
The Stratamodel R2003.12 release does not support GeoLink.

Installing Stratamodel Without OpenWorks

If you install Stratamodel R2003.12 in standalone mode (without OpenWorks), you must install
the Adobe Acrobat Reader and LAM license components from the OpenWorks R2003.12
CD-ROM set. These required components are not included on the Stratamodel CD-ROM. Install
the Adobe Acrobat Reader and LAM license components before you install Stratamodel.

Setting Up True Color Mode Display

To run Stratamodel R2003.12 on a Sun Solaris or SGI IRIX system, the systems Window
Manager must be set to display color in True Color mode. The following instructions explain how
to set up a Solaris or IRIX system to run in True Color mode. (If you use Linux, your system is
already running in True Color mode.)
The Badleys Fault Seal Analysis application runs only on a Pseudocolor display. For information
about displaying Badleys Fault Seal Analysis remotely to a Pseudocolor display, see the topic
Pseudocolor Required for Badleys Fault Seal Analysis on page 20.

Sun Solaris
To check whether your system is set to run Pseudocolor (8-bit color) or True Color (24-bit color),
cd to /usr/openwin/bin, then run the command xpdyinfo. The sections labelled screen #0 and
screen # 1 contain specifications for several visuals. Among the specifications, look for the depth
values. A depth value of 8 planes indicates the specified monitor is running in Pseudocolor mode.
A depth value of 24 planes indicates the monitor is running in True Color mode.
To display True Color on a Solaris system, you must first install the new operating system, SunOS
5.8, Solaris 8.0 (Version 0202), plus the Motif patch 108940-52.
Next, edit the Xservers file, as described in the following steps:
1. Make a backup copy of Xservers file:
cp /usr/dt/config/Xserver /usr/dt/config/Xserver.back
Note: The Xservers file may also be located in /etc/dt/config. If it is located in both places, the
file in /etc is used.
2. Open the Xservers file in a text editor, and locate the line at the bottom of the file (as shown in
the following example):
:0 Local local_uid@console root /usr/openwin/bin/X -dev /dev/fbs/
ifb2 -dev /dev/fbs/ifb1
3. Add the option defdepth 24 after ifb2 and after ifb1, as shown in the following example (or
after ffb0 and ffb1, if you have dual ffb graphics cards):
:0 Local local_uid@console root /usr/openwin/bin/X -dev /dev/fbs/
ifb2 defdepth 24 -dev /dev/fbs/ifb1 defdepth 24

Note: The italicized notations in the example may not match the notations in your Xservers file,
depending on the graphics board and driver you have. The important point is that you add
defdepth 24 after the equivalent of the italicized words.
4. Log out and log in to restart the X server.

Landmark

SGI IRIX
By default, the SGI X Server is configured to display in Pseudocolor mode (that is, display 8-bit
color). The operating system for IRIX has not changed for R2003.12, so before you run
Stratamodel, switch to True Color mode (24-bit color).
To switch the default color mode, perform the following steps:
1. Run the command /usr/bin/X11/xdpyinfo. Verify that your server is capable of
displaying 12-bit or 24-bit color. If it is, lines similar to the following ones appear:
visual id, max buffers, depth: 0x28, 0, 12
visual id, max buffers, depth: 0x29, 0, 12
visual id, max buffers, depth: 0x2a, 0, 24
The last number on each line represents the number of bits available for that visual.
2. Log in as root.
3. Copy the file /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers to /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers.ORIG.
4. Edit the Xservers file. By default, the file contains a string like the following one:
:0 secure /usr/bin/X11/X -bs -nobitscale -c -class PseudoColor
-depth 8 -solidroot sgilightblue -cursorFG red -cursorBG white
To run 24-bit color (True Color), change the class and depth settings, as shown in the following
example:
:0 secure /usr/bin/X11/X -bs -nobitscale -c -class TrueColor
-depth 24 -solidroot sgilightblue -cursorFG red -cursorBG white
(To run 8-bit Psuedocolor, change the depth setting to 8.)
5. Log out and log in to restart the X server. (You can also restart the X server by moving the
cursor over the desktop and using the Vulcan death-grip (that is, pressing <Cntrl> <Shift>
<F12> <\> from the number keypad).

Initializing Stratamodel
Once you have properly installed Stratamodel, have correctly configured the licenses, and have set
up your system to run in True Color mode, use one of the following methods to invoke
Stratamodel:
Select Stratamodel from the OpenWorks Command Menu.
In an xterm window, enter the command to start Stratamodel.
Use the first method if OpenWorks is installed and accessible on the host system. Use the second
method if you do not have OpenWorks or if you want to bypass the OpenWorks front-end. The
remainder of this topic describes how to use the two methods.

Starting Stratamodel from the OpenWorks Command Menu

You can launch Stratamodel from the OpenWorks Command Menu if your launcher.dat file
contains the following entry in the Applications section:
"Stratamodel" "$SGMHOME/run.xsgm 2>$HOME/run/SGM.err 1>&2 &"
The launcher.dat file is typically located in your home directory. A master template copy can be
found in $OWHOME/templates. This file is copied to your home directory during an lgcuser
account setup session. The Stratamodel installation directory contains an example launcher.dat file
(SGM.launcher.dat), which has an entry for Stratamodel. Remember, the only valid way to indent
in this file is to use tabs.
You may also need to add the following lines in your .lgclogin file in your home directory:
if ( -d ${OWHOME}/Stratamodel ) then
setenv SGMHOME ${OWHOME}/Stratamodel
set path = ( ${path} ${SGMHOME} )
endif
Stratamodel installs an example .lgclogin file (SGM.lgclogin) in the Stratamodel home directory.
This file contains the lines shown above.
After restarting OpenWorks, you can select Applications > Stratamodel to display the main
Stratamodel window.

Starting Stratamodel from an xterm Window

If you are operating in an X-Window environment and are not using OpenWorks, you can initialize
Stratamodel directly from an xterm window. To execute Stratamodel from an xterm window,
locate the Stratamodel installation directory and invoke the main Stratamodel run script
run.xsgm. For example, if Stratamodel is located in the directory /usr/apps/Stratamodel, the
following command starts Stratamodel.
/usr/apps/Stratamodel/run.xsgm

Environmental Variables
The following list describes environment variables you can define in Stratamodel.

BADLEY_DISPLAY Set to 0 or 1 to specify the monitor to use for displaying Badleys

Fault Seal Analysis.

COLORCHG For StrataMap, set to no if StrataMap fails because it runs out of colors
and reports an X error (.X_StoreColors). Set the variable and restart. Set to yes to run in
Pseudocolor to manipulate the color table without redrawing the image. If insufficient space is
available to allocate a private colormap, the program may crash in this mode.

EXPORT_RAW_TIPLOOPS For POSC RESCUE data, specify whether Fault-Tiploops

are clipped (0, the default setting) or not clipped (1) to the Stratamodel reservoir top and
bottom. Setting this value to 1 turns off clipping and exports the trimloop with no clipping.

FLEXLM_NO_CKOUT_INSTALL_LIC If you have problems with licensing, remove

any .flexlmrc file present in the startup directory. (The . (dot) prefix hides the .flexlmrc file.)
Although Stratamodel does not create this file at startup, other Landmark products can create
it. A .flexlmrc file contains a path to your license.dat file, which may conflict with the path set
in other locations (such as the path set with the LM_LICENSE_FILE environment variable).
To prevent the creation of a .flexlmrc file, execute the following environment variable:
setenv FLEXLM_NO_CKOUT_INSTALL_LIC 1

FSA_DISPLAY Redirect the Badleys Fault Seal Analysis application to a remote display,
such as a PC-compatible running Exceed 3D, a Solaris system, or an SGI system (while you
use the global DISPLAY variable to display all other Stratamodel applications and elements on
a system running in True Color mode). To use the FSA_DISPLAY variable, enter the xhost +
command on the remote system. On the local system, enter a command similar to the following
one: setenv FSA_DISPLAY remsystem:0.0, where remsystem is the name of the
remote system.

MAIN_MEMORY_SIZE Use if the memory required for loading seismic traces into the
model exceeds the amount of system memory. Once the size of main memory is reached, load
processes are split into multiple passes.

MAXCOLRS For StrataMap, set MAXCOLRS to 40 (for Solaris machines only) to set
StrataMap to come up on the nongraphics monitor.

MOPCALC_MSGLEVEL Specify the level of detail written to the xterm you use to
launch Stratamodel. Use a value from 1 to 4, with 4 for the most comprehensive level of detail.

NO_TRUNCATION_SECTIONS For POSC RESCUE data, specify whether Stratamodel

unconformity events are exported as RESCUE sections or as part of RESCUE horizons. By
default, unconformity events are exported as RESCUE sections. Set this variable to 1 to export
unconformities as RESCUE horizons.

USE_RESCUE_VERSION Set the version of POSC RESCUE to export, if you want to

override the default POSC RESCUE data version of 30.1.
Enter setenv USE_RESCUE_VERSION ##
where ## represents the integers for the version of POSC RESCUE output you want to create.

Landmark

XSGM_SHD_STEREO_P Set the maximum parallax angle, which shouldn't exceed 3

degrees (default setting). The value range is -6 to 6. The left and right eye viewing frustrums
are literally rotated by half of this angle to provide the necessary eye separation.
NOTE: If you select the S key, a slider bar appears, which you use to adjust parallax
interactively. If you use the slider, you do not need to set this variable.

XSGM_SHD_STEREO_DX Use as a multiplier to set the location of the zero parallax

plane. The value range is -0.5 to 5. At zero parallax, left and right eye images are coincident
resulting in no stereo effect (at that location). The default value is 0.5, which makes the back
of the scene the plane of zero parallax (for example, the entire model is in front of the screen
with its back end at the screen). This parameter also controls the location of the axis used for
rotating the left and right eye viewing frustrums. When this value is in the -0.5 to 0.5 range, the
plane of zero parallax is visible in the model, however this value can be made large to
exaggerate the stereo effect, resulting in models substantially in front of or behind the screen.
NOTE: If you select the S key, a slider bar appears, which you can use to adjust parallax
interactively. If you use the slider, you do not need to set this variable.

XSGM_DAM_PTS_PER_LAYER For Attribute Model set the number of well points

allowed in a layer used in interpolating the attribute model. You can override the default
number of well points with this variable. The value is dynamically set based on the number of
wells in all well models or the default maximum of 4000 is used.

XSGM_SGM_SCREEN Specify the monitor to use for displaying Stratamodel (0 or 1).

(Functional on Solaris computers only if more than one monitor has a Creator 3D graphics
card.)

XSGM_WELL_POINTS Turn on various visual debugging options, such as Composite

Points, Layer Crossing, and Original Point. If defined, a special pop-up menu is created in
Show Displays that enables well points to be drawn on each well trajectory.

Stratamodel R2003.12 Release Notes

New Issues for R2003.12

The following notes and problems have been added for the 2003.12 release of Stratamodel.

Sun and SGI: True Color Mode Required

To run Stratamodel 2003.12 on Sun Solaris and SGI IRIX systems, the system must be configured
to display 24-bit color (True Color). For information about this process, see Setting Up True Color
Mode Display on page 11.
Note that the Badleys Fault Seal Analysis (Badleys FSA) application requires Pseudocolor
display, so to run Badleys FSA on Sun or SGI, you need to set up a remote display for this purpose
(as described in Pseudocolor Required for Badleys Fault Seal Analysis on page 20).

GeoLink Not Supported

Support for GeoLink has been discontinued. If you select Commands > Attribute Extract/Load
> Geolink in the Stratamodel window, an error message appears and informs you GeoLink is not
supported. If you have used GeoLink in earlier releases and want to continue to use it, you must
keep an older version of Stratamodel. (A standalone installation is sufficient. GeoLink does not
need OpenWorks to run.)

Recovering If StrataMap Stops Functioning

If StrataMap stops functioning for any reason, kill the StrataMap process. (That is, kill the process
if you are using StrataMap and the StrataMap window menu names suddenly appear dimmed for
no known reason, including the Stop menu option.)
To kill the StrataMap process, select Utilities > Process IDs to Kill in the Stratamodel window.
In the Kill Active Programs dialog box that appears, highlight the line that ends with StrataMap,
then click the Kill button.

Overriding the Default POSC RESCUE Version

By default, Stratamodel R2003.12 creates POSC RESCUE version 30.1 data. (Version 30.1 POSC
RESCUE data is accessible in Powermodel.) If you want to create POSC RESCUE data in a lower
version, set the USE_RESCUE_VERSION environment variable for the POSC RESCUE version
you need. Use the command:
setenv USE_RESCUE_VERSION ##

where ## represents the integers for the POSC RESCUE output you want to create. (For example,
enter 29 to create POSC RESCUE output for use in OpenVision. Valid entries are 30, 29, ... 24.)

No User Interface to Edit Line Color of Z-MAP PLus Culture Data

All Platforms: If you import Z-MAP Plus MFDs by using the Z-MAP Plus Culture Data Loader
window, the line color for elements, such as fault lines and contour lines, is set to white by default.
No user interface is currently available for changing the line color. To change line color, you must
edit the culture data file manually. This problem applies to all platforms.
To display the Z-MAP Plus Culture Data Loader window, select Commands >
Attribute Extract/Load > Z-MAP Plus Culture Data. The window has no button to enable you
to interactively change the line color of imported data. (Defects 140523, 141236)
Workaround: To change the line color, edit the RGB color values in the culture data output file
(default.clt) in a text editor. A simplified example of a .clt file follows.
Example CLT File
COLOR 1 1 1 ;
LINE
3030 1300 -6995.090332
...
3140 1235 -7090.652344
;

The first line of the file is a color label, followed by descriptions of the lines displayed in the color.
In the example, an ellipsis (...) indicates missing text.
In this example, the color label specifies that the lines after the label are drawn in white. The line
color is defined by normalized RGB values. The color applies to all line descriptions that follow
until a new color label is encountered. (Lines are described with a series of x, y, z values for each
line node.)
To apply another color to all the lines, change the color label at the beginning of the file. (For
example color label values, see Example Color Label Entry Lines on page 19.)
Example CLT File Edited to Include Multiple Color Labels
COLOR 1 0 0 ;
LINE
3030 1300 -6995.090332

To apply a color to particular lines, insert a color label above the line descriptions, as shown in the
preceding example. In the example, the first line is displayed in red (RGB values = 1 0 0), and the
second line is displayed in green (RGB values = 0 1 0). The ellipses (...) indicate missing text.
Example Color Label Entry Lines

To change the line color, edit the normalized RGB values in the color label entry line as shown in
the following table. Normalized RGB values represent each red, green, and blue color component
value (sometimes represented in a value of 0255 decimal or 00FF hexadecimal) as a value
between 0 and 1.

No Help File for Import Wells and Curves from OW Window
On a Sun Solaris or SGI IRIX system, if you select Commands > OW to/from Stratamodel >
Import Wells and Curves from OW to display the Import Wells and Curves from OW window,
then you select Help > Online Manual in the window, no help file appears.
Workaround: To display the appropriate help file, select Help > Online Manual > Importing
and Exporting Data in the Stratamodel window. In the PDF-format Importing and Exporting
Data online guide that appears, click the Importing and Exporting OpenWorks Data bookmark
on the left side of the window.

Stereo Mode for Show Displays

Stereo mode has been tested (without visualization hardware) on all platforms for Stratamodel
R2003.12 (that is, Stereo Graphics 3D simulation achieved by using an emitter and stereo glasses).

Known Issues
The following issues and problems apply to the Stratamodel R2003.12 and at least one previous
release.

No Capture Utility
No capture utility is bundled with Stratamodel R2003.12. On Linux systems, use the GIMP (GNU
Image Manipulation Program) capture utility included with the RedHat 7.2 Gnome desktop
environment.

Three-Button Mouse Required for Some Operations

A three-button mouse is required for interactive log picking, zone definition, fault block definition,
cell picking, and graphics manipulation in 2D and 3D displays. Landmark recommends that you
use a three-button mouse with Stratamodel R2003.12.

Pseudocolor Required for Badleys Fault Seal Analysis

The Badleys Fault Seal Analysis (Badleys FSA) application launches only on display terminals
set to display color in Pseudocolor mode. You cannot run Badleys FSA on a Linux system, since
Linux systems do not support Pseudocolor.
The FireGL4 graphics card with standard configuration does not support Pseudocolor mode. A
PC-compatible system with Exceed 3D can display in Pseudocolor mode. Exceed 3D can launch
the Badleys Fault Seal Analysis application if you have configured the target monitor properly. If
you attempt to launch the Badleys application on a system that is not running in Pseudocolor mode
on the target monitor, the following message appears:
No XWindow PseudoColor-Visual available...Fault Seal module is
exiting...Please rerun on a remote display which supports PseudoColor
or via Windows X-Exceed.
The environment variable FSA-DISPLAY may be used to redirect to a
remote x-display terminal.
Using the Environment Variable FSA_DISPLAY

As indicated in the error message quoted previously, you can set the environment variable
FSA_DISPLAY so that the Badleys application is redirected to a remote display. (You must enter
xhost + on the remote system. You can use the FSA_DISPLAY environment variable instead of
changing the global DISPLAY variable and redirecting all Stratamodel components. You can
redirect the Badleys application to a PC-compatible running Exceed 3D, a Solaris system, or an
SGI system, while you display all other Stratamodel applications and elements on a system that is
running in True Color mode.

Setting Up Exceed 3D to Display Pseudocolor

The following example procedure shows how to configure Exceed 3D 8.0 to display in
Pseudocolor mode on the left monitor. Complete these or similar steps to set up Pseudocolor mode
on your system.
1. From the Start button, select Programs > Hummingbird Connectivity v8.0 > Exceed >
Xconfig.
The exceed.cfg Xconfig window appears.
2. Double-click the Display and Video icon.
The Screen 0 window appears.
3. From the Server Visual list, select PsuedoColor.
4. Click the OK button to close the window and apply pseudocolor to the left monitor.
You are now ready to initialize the Exceed 3D session.

Seismic Datum Error in Converted Elevations

If you import seismic data in the LGC Seismic Loading window, the datum value is subtracted
from resulting elevations rather than added to the elevations. This causes attribute data to be loaded
to cells at an inappropriate elevation. (Defects 140582, 141223)
Workaround: In the LGC Seismic Loading window, multiply the seismic datum value by -1. Enter
the result in the Datum box. For example, if the datum value is 1000, enter -1000.

Remote Access to SeisWorks Data

If you attempt to load SeisWorks data from a remote system (a system that has the SeisWorks data
and the Stratamodel project on it), the data will not load if the local system has no SeisWorks
configuration files on it. SeisWorks requires that the local system have a plist.dat file. In addition,
if you can select the seismic project, but cannot load the seismic data, the local dir.dat path (in
$OWHOME/conf) may be incorrect.
Workaround: To add the needed configuration data to the local system, copy the plist.dat file from
the remote systems $OWHOME/conf folder to the local systems $OWHOME/conf folder.
To correct the $OWHOME/conf/dir.dat path, set the path to point to the remote machine.
(For example, the line /net/merc/seismic_data/<PROJNAME> sets the system to retrieve
data from the merc system, in the folder seismic_data/<PROJNAME>, where <PROJNAME> is
the project folder.)

Show Displays Inaccessible If Logging In from Another Users Account

If you login from another users account you do not have permission to open Show Displays. (For
example, this applies if the other user logs into the system, then you open an xterm from that
account and login.) (Defect 141294)
An error message appears in the .../run/SGM.err file. The following error message is an example
from a system that uses an NVidia card:
Error: Could not open /dev/nvidiactl because the permissions are
too restrictive. Please see the FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS section
of /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/README for steps to correct.

Workaround: To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

1. Login directly to the machine as yourself. Do not login from another user's account.
2. Edit the permissions for the graphics card directories. For example, if you have an NVidia
graphics card, reset the permissions for files in the following directories: /dev/nvidiactl,
/dev/nvidia0, and /dev/nvidia1. If you have a different graphics card, reset the permissions for
the files listed in the error messages that appear when you attempt to display Show Displays.
Error messages will appear in a series until all the required directories have their permissions
set correctly.

Restriction on Importing NCS Grids from StratWorks

StratWorks fault grids created with the Natural Coordinate System (NCS) must be converted to
x,y,z coordinate values before you can import them into Stratamodel.
Workaround: To convert an NCS grid to x,y,z values, display the grid in StratWorks MapView
application and choose XYZ as the Grid Coordinate System. (Defect 138216)

Grids with the Same Name Not Selectable

If an MFD has multiple grids with the same name, the duplicate grids do not appear in selection
lists. A warning message appears, informing you that duplicates were found.
Workaround: To select a grid with a duplicate name, you must first remove the other duplicates
from the MFD or change the grid names so each one is unique. (Defect 100445)

License Problems
If you have problems with licensing, remove any .flexlmrc file present in the startup directory.
(The . (dot) prefix hides the .flexlmrc file.) Although Stratamodel does not create this file at startup,
other Landmark products can create it. A .flexlmrc file contains a path to your license.dat file,
which may conflict with the path set in other locations (such as the path set with the
LM_LICENSE_FILE environment variable).
Workaround: To prevent the creation of a .flexlmrc file, execute the following environment
variable: setenv FLEXLM_NO_CKOUT_INSTALL_LIC 1

Problems from Closing Windows and Dialog Boxes Improperly

It is very important to close windows and dialog boxes properly, by clicking the OK or Save button
or by selecting Exit or Close from the application window menu.
If you close a window or dialog box with the Window Manager Close menu option or the
X-Windows Close button, the application may continue to run as a background process and cause
problems.

Linux: No Password Lock Capability

If you run Stratamodel R2003.12 on a Linux system, you cannot lock the program with a password.
(Defect 141712)

Linux: Unresponsive Radio Buttons

Radio buttons are intermittently unresponsive in the Show Displays applications Colors dialog
box. If you switch between selections, radio buttons sometimes fail to respond when you click
them. (To reach this dialog box, you click the Colors button in the Show Displays window toolbox
and select Change Color Definitions from the menu that appears. Radio buttons in other locations
may be affected also.) (Defect 140462)
Workaround: If you encounter an unresponsive radio button, make a selection by clicking a button
or another radio button in the dialog box. The unresponsive radio button is reactivated.

Linux: Show Displays Window Must Be Active to Use Cycling Keys

If you are using the Show Displays module on a Linux system, if the Show Displays Object
Manager window is on top of the Show Displays window, the cycling keys do not work. This
restriction applies to Linux only. On Sun and SGI systems, Stratamodel automatically directs focus
to the Show Displays window if you press the cycling keys.
Workaround: To use the f, b, c, and s keys to cycle through attributes, the Show Displays window
must be active. To make the window active, select it. The window appears on top of other windows
and the cycling keys are activated. (Defect 139944)
