Commended By Mobile Fire Dept. Fight Flames

Office of Civilian Defense volun-
teer firemen played an important
part in fighting a serious fire, which
gutted the rear wing of Sears Roe-
buck's modern department store in
Mobile, October 13th.
Mr. L. L. Petrey, Chief of the
Mobile Fire Department in a letter
of commendation to Mr. Fred Am,
Commander of the Mobile County
Council of Defense stated:
"I wish to express my sincere
appreciation of the very timely and
efficient help accorded the Mobile
Fire Department at the Sears and
Roebuck early morning blaze by the
OCD truck firemen.
"Immediately on arriving at the
scene of the fire I realized that It
was a serious beginning of a great
conflagration and at once I con-
tacted Assistant Chief Donald Smith
by radio. Assistant Chief Smith
immediately responded with Com-
panies No.3, 10 and about 25 of his
OCD truck firemen, and immedi-
ately got into the active fire fight-
ing without delay and greatly as-
sisted the Mobile Fire Department
in bringing the blaze under con-
trol.

Publishers Comment
On Paper Shortage
Military and essential civilian
wartime requirements of newsprint
magazine and book paper are so
heavy and manpower so short that
the public cannot reasonably expect
any relief, from paper shortage un-
til about the middle of 1945, accord-
ing to the War Production Board.
This announcement was made at
the behest of the newspaper, mag-
azine and book publishers through
their advisory committees after re-
viewing reports on current produc-
tion of print paper and estimates
of production after Victory in Eu-
rope Day. The publishers said they
desired to correct the optimistic be-
lief in some civilian quarters that
substantial relief in printing paper
shortages could be expected when
the European war ends.
"The serious shortage of military
and printing paper continues," they
said, "and needs the intelligent un-
derstanding of the public and of
book, magazine, and newspaper pub-
lishers. The publishers also urged
vigorous continuation of waste pa-
per collections.

Alabama Achieves
War Chest Quota
Alabama again set a new rec-
ord by achieving the quota for
her 1944 War Chest in the brief
time stipUlated by Appeal Chair-
man Major Harwell G. Davis and
Co-Chairman J. L. Bedsole.
When the campaign opened
October 17th, Chairman Davis
urged his co-workers to attain
their goal by November 15th, so
that the stage could be reset for
the Sixth War Loan drive begin-
ning November 20th.
Quota for the Alabama War
Chest 1944 "Victory Appeal" in
behalf of 22 war services and -re-
lief agencies was $1,100,368.40.

Council made up of representatives
from each class room has developed
a fine program, which, it is consci-

beginning of the present school se-
mester and drew up the following
objectives for the year:
I-To further stress the buying
of bonds and stamps in the school
and community.
2-To continue to sponsor and
promote the singing of patriotic
songs.
3-To frame and display awards
received by the council for past
achievements.
4-To keep one up-to-date scrap-
book covering the defense work of
Ramer School.
5-To have each Homeroom keep
a record of its accomplishments and
activities in the Defense effort.
This record is to be placed in the
scrapbook at the end of the year.
6-To sponsor all drives that are
in line with the defense effort.
7-To sponsor fire drills partic-
Ularly stressing the learning and
practicing of existing rules and pro-
cedures.
8-To encourage the acceptance
of rationing and consider it a Dem-
ocratic privilege as well as a patri-
otic responsibility.
9-To equip and keep supplied

According to Miss Mills the sick
room will be the most important
project for the year. She states,
"We have been given a section of
the girls dressing room to be used
for this purpose. It will be under
the supervision of our Sponsor,
Miss Kelly, and one Council mem-
ber appointed weekly. We plan to
furnish it with regular sick-room
furnishings and first aid eqUipment.
"We have equipped 7 first aid
kits and placed them in the most
convenient places in High School.
A check has been given to the El-
ementary School since they pre-
ferred to buy their own equipment.
"The Council is sponsoring con-
tinuous drives for the collection of
scrap paper and metal. Paper is
collected throughout Ramer every

Volunteers Help
With Many Projects
Mrs. J. Y. Brame, Director of the
Montgomery County Citizens Ser-
vice Corps reports a busy time for
her volunteers. She has marshalled
her Block Lealers for active partic-
ipation in the Sixth War Loan
Drive declaring that she is depend-
ing on the full cooperation and
support of this group for this ser-
vice.
The Montgomery District has
made its final shipment of clothing
for Russian War Relief, which to-
talled approximately 15,000 pounds.
In addition 15,000 new, all wool
dresses were sent from Alabama,
the work having been done at the
Montgomery Warehouse under the
direction of Miss Mary Ling Hay-
ley, Supervisor of Home Economics

Mrs. Ray Meade, of Birmingham,

cently spent two days in Montgom-
ery conferring with members of the
staff of the State Department of
Health and others regarding the
progress of cancer control work in
this State.
While here she attended a meet-
ing in the office of Dr. B. F. Aus-
tin, State Health Officer, which was
also attended by Dr. J. P. Chap-
man, chairman of the Committee
on Cancer Control of the Medical
Association of the State of Ala-
bama, and Dr. D. G. Gill, Director
of the State Health Department's
Bureau of Preventable Diseases.
The meeting was devoted mainly
to a discussion of the cancer clinics
for indigent and medically indigent
victims of this disease, which were
provided in legislation passed by the
N. C. FLOYD' 1943 Legislature.

In conformity with the plans of
the National Council of State Gar-
den Clubs, Inc., in establishing liv-
ing memorials to our men and wo-
men in the Armed Forces instead of
stone, the Garden Club of Ala-
bama has planned as its project for
the year the beautification of a
plot of ground within a 43 acre ar-
boretum. Planting will be under
the supervision of Prof. Alfred Ed-
wards, landscape architect of Ala-
bama Polytechnic Ipstitute, . who
originated the idea of the arbor-
etum. .
Never, perhaps in the history of
the organization has there been a
more opportune time to promote
horticultural interests than this
year when its members are given
the privilege of contributing finan-
cially towards the "Garden of Mem-
ory". In time it will be a wonder-
ful scenic spot that will draw peo-
ple from all over the country to en-
joy its beauty. From three to five
thousand varieties of flora will
eventually be grown in the arbor-
etum and it will have perpetual
care. Its beauty will be greatly
enriched by the living memorial
placed there by garden club mem-
bers throughout the state in appre-
ciation of those who have so cour-
ageously . given some of their best
years for the protection and free-
dom of our country.
Begin To Conserve
Coal Now Urges
State Conservator
Production of bituminous coal in
the two primary Appalachian min-
ing districts for the fuel year 1944-45
is at a rate far too low to meet the
requirements for the Southern re-
gion, Interior Secretary' Harold
Ickes has informed Alabama Fuel
Conservator Haygood Paterson.
In these two very important coal
regions the fuel output is averaging
only 3,544,000 tons weekly whereas
says Mr. Ickes, "the estimated re-
quirements are more than 200,00~
tons per week more than that fig-
ure."
Mr. Ickes informs State Conserv-
ator Paterson that it is very nec-
essary that every consumer in Ala-
bama cut down on his coal con-
sumption or somebody is going to
be cold before Winter is over. Coal
goes first to the manufacturer of
war materials and lastly to the do-
mestic consumer.
Mr. Ickes also informs Conserv-
ator Paterson that reconversions
from coal to fuel oil this fall are
not expected to relieve the solid
fuels supply sufficiently to allow
any increase in the Winter's quota
of anthracite coal and Eastern coke.
There will be only seven eighths ot
the regular normal. supply,
