‘Get Your

and help our schools
Allstar Garage, an area company that brings organization solutions to garages,
has partnered with The Union to raise money for Newspapers in Education.

T he Union’s Newspapers in Education program furnishes local schools with newspapers to be used in
the classrooms. Newspapers provide teachers from kindergarten through high school with a teaching
tool at no cost to the school. The students use the paper for a variety of academic lessons, such as reading,
writing, journalism and creative projects. Our Newspapers in Education program provides a valuable learning
experience and covers 11 school districts.
Because of the many budget cuts in our California school system, the next few years will be very challenging
for our schools. Now more than ever, our local schools need our help.
The Union newspaper and Allstar Garage have partnered to offer you a great opportunity to be a part of
this wonderful program called, Get Your Garage Back.
Allstar Garage brings eye-pleasing order to your most embarrassing mess. Their custom designed,
purposed built storage solutions also bring true and lasting functionality. Allstar Garage builds all its cabinets
with MDF (medium density fiberboard), which outperforms the particle board used by many other garage
storage manufacturers. They back their cabinets with a lifetime guarantee.
Allstar Garage has donated 16 feet of custom garage cabinets to be given away at The Union’s Newspapers
in Education booth (gazebo) at the Spring Home & Garden Show. Tickets will be available for a donation of
$1 each, $5 for 6 tickets or $10 for 15.

WUI stands for Wildland Urban Interface,

The best way to answer the question is

Fire Prevention

Vendor profile: Gutterglove

Gutter guard helps reduce house fires

I n efforts to reduce house fires across the state of
California, the California Building Code adopted fire
prevention policy as it relates to gutters for new home “It is the debris that
construction and significant home remodels. More accumulates in gutters that
specifically, paragraph 704A.1.5 of Chapter 7A states:
“Roof gutters shall be provided with the means to
poses one of the greatest
prevent the accumulation of leaves and debris in the wildfire vulnerabilities
gutter.” for a building.”
The “Builders Wildfire Mitigation Guide,” distributed
— Builders Wildfire Mitigation Guide
by UC Berkeley (firecenter.berkeley.edu/bwmg/gutters.
html), comments on the hazards of gutter fires.
“It is the debris that accumulates in gutters that
poses one of the greatest wildfire vulnerabilities for a
building.”The article went on to say,“If embers generated during a wildfire ignite debris, … the resulting fire
will provide a flaming (flame impingement) exposure to the edge of the roof.”
The code language can be found at the California Office of the State Fire Marshal’s Web site www.fire.
ca.gov.
One company that provides a solution for keeping fire hazard leaves and pine needles out of your gutters
is Gutterglove Gutterguard (www.Gutterglove.com). The local authorized dealer for Nevada County, Kevin
O’Connor, has always been concerned about the potential of gutter fires to erupt.
“One of the reasons I offer Gutterglove gutter protection is because absolutely no debris can get in
your gutter,” said O’Connor. “Gutterglove is highly efficient and strong because it has a hardened anodized
aluminum frame that bridges your gutter, while supporting the type 316 stainless steel mesh, making it
impossible for leaves, pine needles or even roof sand grit to enter your gutter, eliminating any fire potential
altogether.”
The inventor of the U.S. Patented Gutterglove gutter guard, Robert Lenney, grew up in Grass Valley and has
a passion for keeping your gutters “fire safe.”
The code currently affects certain areas of the state including the State Responsibility Areas and the very
high zones of the Local Responsibility Areas. Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps are available through the fire
marshals Web site.
With the addition of these fire prevention codes, the amount of house fires are sure to be reduced.
Check out Gutterglove’s unique system at this year’s home show, outside booth # 50.

Earth Day 2010
Celebrate in nevada County

The first Earth Day, April 1970

It is hard to believe how far we have come as a nation from the first Earth Day
in 1970, where a factory could legally spew black clouds of toxic into the air or
dump tons of toxic waste into a nearby stream. With green building practices and
incentives at an all time high, Earth Day is something we can proudly say we have
progressed as a nation with solar, organic and green living…
How was Earth Day started?
In Spring 1970, Senator Gaylord Nelson created Earth Day as a way to “force this
issue onto the national agenda.” On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day was held. People
all over the country made promises to help the environment. Everyone got involved
and since then, Earth Day has spread all over the planet. People all over the world know
that there are problems we need to work on and this is our special day to look at the
planet and see what needs changing. On the first Earth Day, approximately 20 million
Americans participated.

vendor profile: Ace Welding

The greener side of powder coating

H andsome steel and cedar gates frame the entrance
to Ace Welding, one of Nevada County’s most
successful “going green” businesses. Owner and
artisan/designer Gabe Kulp, shows visitors around his
8,000-square-foot workspace, emphasizing greening
his operation. The latest innovation he wants to talk
about is his powder-coating operation. Powder coating
is a green means of finishing metals with a free flowing
dry powder. The metal parts are placed in an oven where
the powder particles melt into a smooth, continuous
film. Powder coating is greener than conventional wet
painting from many perspectives.
Durable powder coating lasts much longer than conventional painting and doesn’t have to be redone every five
years or so. Ace Welding can refinish patio furniture, bikes, motorcycle frames, patio or indoor furniture, lamps
— just about anything metal can be refurbished with the process. Powder coating is widely used on contemporary
furnishings and architectural metal, too. If you’ve been thinking about a handsome table with a chunky metal
base and a slab of locally harvested madrone for the top, Ace Welding will design and fabricate it for you or work
to your specifications. Picturing a gate with one rainbow color shading playfully into another? Such blending
flows smoothly with powder coating.
Ace is the only local metal fabricating shop doing its own powder coating, keeping dollars in our economy
and saving on transport costs to Sacramento. Fabricating and powder coating locally means shorter lead time
and faster finished goods, too.
Kulp checks the progress through a window in his 25-foot long powder coating oven, the largest in the
foothills. It doesn’t get hot enough to bake a pizza, so the power used to heat it is about the same as is used by
the blower in conventional paint booths.
Powder coating produces far less hazardous waste than conventional painting. No cans of sticky, off-gassing
liquids congeal at the landfill or leak into the water table. Powder coating overspray can be swept up and recycled
or melted into an inert block for disposal.
Unlike conventional paint, powder coating requires no solvents, keeping toxic isocyanates out of the work
environment and the surrounding air. Isocyanates are volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can cause asthma
and other lung disorders. They can also be absorbed through the skin and quickly penetrate even the toughest
protective gear. Powder coating, in great contrast, emits near zero VOCs and has virtually no emissions other than
carbon dioxide. Plants on the hillside adjacent to the powder coating shop thrive.
If you’re looking for greener local metal fabrication and finishing, make your way down Loma Rica Drive near the airport to take a look at Ace Welding or talk to
Gabe and his crew at this year’s Spring Home & Garden Show, located outside along the marigold pathway, booth # 75.

Vendor profile: Plan it solar

Nevada County named

No. 1 solar county in California
W hile most folks are familiar with Nevada County’s rich heritage as a hub for the gold-
mining industry and early pioneer life, there is now a new type of Gold Rush pioneer
that has put Nevada County back on the map — only this time the gold is falling from the sky.
This new “gold” is the golden sunshine that falls on the region’s rooftops, lawns and meadows,
for sometimes up to 300 days or more a year, and it was just over 30 years ago that local solar
pioneers began harvesting this sunshine for power. Along the way, they planted seeds that
would transform our area into a regional powerhouse, so that by the year 2010 you are now able
to attend this year’s Spring Home & Garden Show and say that you are standing in the middle
of the No. 1 solar county in the No. 1 solar state in America.
This recognition as the No. 1 community for solar in California was bestowed upon Nevada
County and its western hubs, Nevada City and Grass Valley, several months ago by Environment
California, using per capita and per household solar adoption rates based on statewide California
Solar Initiative data. Each July, Environment California issues their annual “California’s Solar
Cities” report, which ranks cities across the state based on the total installed amount of solar
electric systems (also known as PV, short for photovoltaic). According to statistics, while major
metropolitan areas have more total solar installations, it is the small rural communities that
stand out when the solar rankings are focused on solar systems per household.
In the most recent“California’s Solar Cities”report, the No. 1 city for solar roofs per household
was called out as being none other than “remote and rustic” Nevada City, with sister city Grass
Valley close behind, ranked ninth in the state. The reasons why Nevada County is now the
No. solar county in the No. 1 solar state in America can be found all around you at this year’s
Home & Garden Show. Here you’ll find not only an enlightened (no pun intended) and eager
populace who are excited and ready to save money while saving resources, but you’ll also find a

Do-it-yourself solar
Save money on heating water and your home
Homeowners with skills and time can save money by installing their own solar. Let’s look at each of the
three main ways solar energy can be used to reduce your energy costs.

Home Heating
Space heating in Nevada County constitutes about 40 percent of the average homeowner’s annual energy
bill, so using the sun to offset some of this cost makes a lot of sense. The simplest way to integrate solar into a
home is with south facing windows. If your home is like many I’ve seen, you may already have the capability
but you’ve inadvertently “turned it off” by closing interior shades during the day in the heating season. In my
own home, half of all the window area faces south. On a sunny January day it can get up to 78°F inside and
my heating system won’t come on until the following evening and my neighbor’s homes all have woodstove
smoke streaming out of their flues the next morning. Closing your interior shades can save a small amount
of energy overnight and give you some privacy as well, but if you don’t mind opening them up during the
day you can save a lot of heating energy. Trimming branches or removing trees might be all you need to
maximize your potential. If you’re building new, remodeling or adding on to your home, work at maximizing
your south-facing window area.
Other ways to add south facing solar collection area include a thermosiphoning air panel (TAP) or a
combined space and water heating system.

Water Heating
If you, a family member or a friend has plumbing skills, solar water heating is another possibility. There
are systems specifically designed to help make the job as easy as possible for do-it-yourselfers, and thousands

of people all over the world have even built their own systems from parts available from plumbing suppliers.
In the case of pre-manufactured systems, look for one listed by the SRCC (Solar Rating & Certification
Corporation) as you could be eligible to receive a rebate, tax credit or both to help defray the cost. Water
heating costs in Nevada County average about 15 percent of your annual energy cost but a solar water heating
system can cover 30 percent to 85 percent of that cost.

Solar Power
Adding a solar power system to your home is the most challenging do-it-yourself project, but judging
from the permits pulled at the county, more and more people are going this route. We’ve helped a number
of customers by assisting them in the selection of equipment, applying for the permit, and completion of the
paperwork required for the rebate and tax credit.

Solar power cart powers blender at Maui Wowi Smoothies
Enjoy a delicious smoothie from Maui Wowi Smoothies booth, located to the left of the Main Building
when you walk in the Main Gate to the Home Show, where the blender will be powered by a solar power cart,
designed and built by students of Sierra College, ESS32 Intermediate Photovoltaic Design and Installation
class. Equipment was supplied by Sierra Solar Systems of Grass Valley. The cart is powered by 4- Kyocera 135-
watt, solar-electric modules. It has a maximum output of 3500 watts at 120 volts AC, provided by an Outback
VFX3524 Sine Wave Inverter. Power is stored in 2- 98 amp-hour gel batteries. This cart is one of four made by
the ESS32 students as a class project. Come learn more about the cart with Jon of Sierra Solar on Saturday
and Sunday at noon.

For the kids: NU students perform skit

Nevada Union Going Green: “It Starts with Us,” performed Sunday every hour on the hour in the Earth
Day section of the event. At the “It Starts With Us” booth, with Nevada Union’s Go Green Committee, there
will be a skit demonstrating how the pollution of our earth can grow. It shows the effects that just one person,
out of over 6 billion people living on this planet, has on the environment. If one person throws a piece of trash
into the river, it adds up and the beautiful blue river slowly turns into a trash river. However, as we see one
person take action and pick trash out of the river, it slowly turns back into its original state. The presentation
also involves the audience by having them suggest ways they can rid the trash in the river.
The skit will take place every hour on the hour all day Sunday at the Nevada Union booth, located in the
Earth Day area of the event (next to the beer and wine pavilion)

10:45-11:15 a.m. — SIGBA: Go Green with Small Homes
Learn the benefits of designing and building smaller energy and space efficient homes, presented by Courtney
J. Cook, the membership chairman of for SIGBA’Ss Foothills Chapter and a local general contractor and Certified
Green Building Professional. Just what is green building and how does it benefit homeowners? How can we
integrate green materials and products into smaller homes? How can we build a home that will keep us healthier
and happier and with more money in our pockets? What is the whole-house approach to designing and building
a home? Find out more about green building strategies and products, plus: creating an energy efficient home,
heating systems for smaller homes, indoor air quality, and cost-effective green solutions for smaller homes.

11:30 a.m.-12 p.m. — SIGBA: Energy Monitoring Devices

Real time energy monitoring is an energy efficiency breakthrough where you have the ability to see your
electricity or gas usage in real time, which leads to substantial reductions and savings on utility bills.
Join Mike Leslie of SIGBA and learn more on how to turn your electricity and gas from being invisible to being
tangible — like a thermometer makes air temperatures visible, energy monitoring devices make your electricity use
visible.  Learn about the different types of monitors and how they are used and installed.

12:15-12:45 p.m. — Sustainable Energy Group: One Family’s Approach To Sustainable Living
Ray Darby of Sustainable Energy Group will explain the importance of sustainable living.  As a specialist in
finding the best energy options for a given situation, he’ll cover  the energy, economic and environmental benefits
resulting from his family’s approach and answer questions from participants.  Learn how the choices his family
has made over the years have given them a return on their investment of hundreds of percent, far exceeding the
stock market, while making them more comfortable and financially secure in these challenging economic times.

1-1:30 p.m. — Ridge Feed: Producing Food in Your Own Backyard

Ridge Feed Simply Country, The Farm Store & Ridge Feed & Supply, will present fun and informative
information on producing your own foods in your backyard. What can be more Earth friendly than becoming
more self-reliant and productive on your own land? With information on poultry for eggs and meat, goat and
cattle for dairy products, and raising livestock for meat. Learn more on organic feeds and fertilizers, new organic
fodder, (fresh sprouted grains), care and housing.

1:45-2:30 p.m. — Plan It Solar: PV Incentives for 2010: How to Not Pay for Solar
With local power rates much higher than the U.S. average and local solar installation prices lower than average,
solar electric systems (also known as PV systems) can frequently pay for themselves in our area without any help
from government incentives. So once you add in state and federal programs that cover up to 40 percent of the cost
of going solar, you may not be surprised to hear that homeowners are now seeing payback periods of five years or
less. Come hear local expert Martin Webb discuss solar incentives for 2010.

2:45-3 p.m. — Hague Water: Solar Water Heater

Using energy from the sun to heat water is the best use of solar energy. Today, millions of homes and businesses
use solar water heating systems because they are so cost effective.  Solar water heaters are the most cost effective
way to reduce carbon emissions and reduce dependence on imported energy. Join Austin, of Hague Quality Water
in his informative lessons on efficiency of solar water heaters and the rebates and tax credits available.

3 p.m. — History of Earth Day, Hands Around the world

Learn about the history of Earth Day with John Olmstead and join us to hold hands around the world as all
Home Show attendees will take a minute to join hands in a giant circle to sing “We’ve Got the Whole World in our
Hands” to symbolize everyone’s path ahead to save the world for our children and their grandchildren. Celebrate
Earth Day’s 40th anniversary with 40 countries, at all latitudes.

3:15-3:45 p.m. — Q & Q: Fire Resistant Retrofitting and Sustainable Living

Sustainable living implies resource efficiency and what is more resource efficient than maintaining the good
things you already have and living in harmony with your environment, like your home, even through a wildfire.
Join Frans Velthuijsen of SIGBA in a presentation giving you a brief overview of the consequences of a wildfire in
your neighborhood and how a typical home can catch on fire under those circumstances. Learn what you can do as
a homeowner to make your home more fire resistant. From the simple and inexpensive to the more elaborate. We
will have some sample materials to show and some how-to handouts for do-it-yourselfers.

vendor profile: Imel Flooring

Selecting the right floor for you

I mproving the flooring in a room can transform the whole feeling of a home and add tremendous value,
which is extremely important. Today, there is an unbelievable variety of stunning flooring options in price
ranges that suit any budget.
Everyone at Imel Flooring understands it can be overwhelming trying to decide what flooring is right for
your home. There are a myriad of options to choose from, so it’s important to understand the basics.
In the past decade, improvements in manufacturing methods and installation systems have created many
additional flooring options for home improvement and decoration. Making the right choice can seem mind-
boggling for many homeowners. It is vital to understand the various types of floors and whether they will
meet your needs and expectations.
Laminate flooring, for instance, is typically tough and durable. Laminate provides an upscale appearance
with the characteristics of real wood and stone. It is easy to care for, in addition to being scratch-and-moisture-
resistant. MasterWorks technology enables Armstrong laminate flooring to create the most realistic, clear, and
vibrant laminate floor designs. Its patented ArmaLock Laminate Flooring Installation system makes it easy
to install a laminate floor without glue. Generally, all laminate floors combine a realistic impression of real
hardwood, stone and tile with an extremely durable finish. These floors have become a popular alternative to
real hardwood and vinyl floors.
Hardwood flooring, typically considered rich and natural, can add unmistakable charm to any room.
Currently, hardwood floors come in more varieties, widths and colors than ever before. And, as an added
bonus, they are more durable than ever. With proper care and maintenance, hardwood can last a lifetime and
will, again, add extra value to your home in the duration. Some hardwood floors are now offered with a click-
lock, glueless tongue-and-groove locking system, making glues and nails unnecessary.
Earlier this month, Imel Flooring re-located to 17286 Cattle Drive in Penn Valley. The new location will feature a spectacular showroom, tailored to help clients
make the right flooring and installation decisions for their homes and ensure their satisfaction for years to come, offering brands that most customers have
come to know and trust because they offer style, quality, value and the best warranties in the industry. Be sure to stop by Imel Flooring’s booth at the Home
Show, located in the Main Building, booth # 41.

Finally, we shouldn’t forget to mention the additional savings available through manufacturer sale prices and
incentives. For example, Bosch is offering a $200 rebate on any Vision Series washer or dryer, or $150 on any
free-standing refrigerator. If you are planning on purchasing more than one piece, you will want to check out the
“Appliance Package”incentives being offered by Bosch, Maytag and Whirlpool. Rebate offered are as high as $900
on packages purchased at the same time. Stop by the Grass Valley store and talk with Tim for more information on
any of these offers.
Once your new appliances are delivered, installed and in use you will continue to save money for many years to
come. The new appliances that qualify for the California Cash For Appliances and PG&E programs are all energy
efficient, consuming far less electricity and water than older models. That equates to less dollars spent on utilities
and more money in your wallet. This truly is a great opportunity to save money in many ways at the same time.
