THE GOLDEN LEAF AWARDS—2015
In SEPTEMBER 2015 Alliance One Tobacco Malawi (AOTM) received a Golden Leaf Award in the
“Most impressive Public Service Initi ati ve” category for its reforestati on program in Malawi.
This is the 5th consecuti ve nominati on and award for Alliance One, having won the
awards in previous years in the following categories:
AOTM has established forests on its own forestry farms and in government forests within a 50 km radius of all our
growers (Mpale, Chilanga, Khola, Chikumbutso, Lombwa, Kaombe, Ngala, Dzalanyama and Viphya).

With closer interacti on with the Malawi Government through the Forestry department, AOTM has created a
vibrant and sustainable forestry program, while conti nuing with our reforestati on program for the past four years
we conti nue to liaise with the government on concession for areas where trees have already been logged to enable
us replant trees in order to protect our investment and conti nue sustaining the supply of wood for our farmers.

took place in 2006, in Bali, Indonesia. The 2015

The increase in our forestry program has created the formati on of a separate Forestry department
within Alliance One Malawi and created employment of over 1,500 people within forestry areas
providing much needed employment within the communiti es and moving people away from
making charcoal and illegal logging. To date more than 220 ex charcoal burners around Dzalanyama
have been employed in Alliance One aff orestati on projects in order to curb the practi ce of illegal
logging.

Alliance One Malawi is currently involved in large scale aff orestati on projects
with targets to plant 1,200 ha annually for the next 7 years starti ng from
the 2012/2013 season. By the 2014/2015 season all of AOTM’s Flue Cured
Tobacco growers used curing wood from a sustainable source.

By the end of 2019/2020 crop season, all AOTM IPS Burley Farmers will be
curing their tobacco in Live Barns.

In additi on to above, we also planted 79,092 bamboos
on 254 hectares in our own farms and with smallholder
farmers.
Curing wood for both commercial and smallholder IPS FCV growers will
come from AOTM plantati ons.
