CLEOPATRA BIOGRAPHY TIMELINE

Ruled with: her two brother-husbands, Ptolemy XIII (r. 51 - 47) and Ptolemy XIV (r. 47 44). She made them murder. And with her son Ptolemy XV (or Caesarion, the son whom
she claimed she has had with Julius Caesar,r. 44 - 30).
In 58 BC Ptolemy XII (weak and cruel ruler) fled to Rome and Berenice took the throne.
Married Archelaus (after having her first husband strangled). During her reign Cleopatra
VI died in strange conditions.
In 55 BC Ptolemy XII reclaimed hi throne. Berenice and her husband were killed.
Cleopatra VII was then the pharaoh's oldest child. When Ptolemy XII died in 51 BC,
Cleopatra and Ptolemy XIII (her brother) inherited the throne.
She was 17 when she became queen of Egypt. She was not at all beautiful but she had a
lot of charisma and was very intelligent (spoke 9 languages and the first of the Ptolemy to
speak Egyptian).
In 48 BC a conspiration (led by a Eunuch named Pothinus) forced Cleopatra to go into
exile in Syria.
Wanted to regain her throne. Amassed an army on Egypt's border.
Became Caesar's lover in 48 BC.
Alexandria's war lasted 6 months. Pothinus was killed in battle. Ptolemy XIII drowned in
the Nile. Cleopatra was restored to her throne.
In 46 BC Caesar invited Cleopatra to Rome. Lived there for about 2 years.
On March 15, 44BC Caesar (at a Senate meeting) was stabbed to death by some
conspirators. Cleopatra was in Rome at this time. Returned to Egypt: install her son on
the throne.
Anarchy and civil war in Rome. Empire divided between 3 men: Caesar's great-nephew
Octavian,Marcus Lepidus and Marcus Antonius.
In 42 BC Marcus Antonius summoned Cleopatra to Tarsus (today Turkey). Was like
Caesar charmed and they became lovers.
In 46 BC Marcus Antonius married Cleopatra.
In 31 BC Marcus Antonius's forces fought the Romans in a sea battle off the coast of
Actium, Greece and lost.
In 30 BC Marcus Antonius killed himself (stabbed himself in the stomach) and Cleopatra
was found with two pricks on her arms (she let herself be bitten by an asp, a kind of
poisonous snake). As she had wished, she was buried beside Marc Antonius.

Let me relate to you my life story.

Read carefully and decide whether I
chose the right path when faced with
crucial situations.

I was born in 69 BC in Alexandria which was the capital of Egypt at the time. My father was the
Pharaoh of Egypt when I was born and his name is Ptolemy XII. In 51 BC my father died and
since I was the eldest child, I inherited the throne of Egypt with my brother Ptolemy XIII.
At age 18, I was the queen of Egypt which was not an easy job. The Romans were conquering
city after city and they were even beginning to gain control over Egypt when I took the throne.
Keeping the Romans from completely taking over my land was a struggle in itself. Along with
that, I had enemies to contend with. People were jealous that I was so intelligent (I knew 9
languages) and that I was an independent ruler. I ruled for 3 years until I was overthrown by one
of my fathers advisors. I was forced to leave Egypt and move to Syria while my younger brother
became the sole ruler of Egypt. But I dont give up so easily.
I was furious that my brother agreed to this. I found out that the Roman general, Julius Caesar,
was in Alexandria and I devised a plan to enter into the city of Alexandria to make a plea to him.
I couldnt simply walk into the city or my brother would have me imprisoned or worse. So, I had
myself wrapped in an oriental rug and had the rug offered as a gift to Caesar. When the rug was
unrolled, I tumbled out. Though Im known in modern day to have been a great beauty, I truly
wasnt. But my charm overtook the powerful Caesar and it was love at first sight.
My brother felt he had been betrayed and he declared war against Caesar and his Roman army.
My brother died in the war and Caesar gained control of the throne of Alexandria. Caesar

restored the throne to me. Again, I was the queen of Egypt and was worshipped as a Pharaoh.
Caesar and I had a son together but a short time later, Caesar died.
Upon his death, Rome began to divide. I knew that I had to stay in favor with the Romans so that
they would not take the throne of Egypt away from me. When Mark Antony prevailed as ruler of
the Roman Empire, I supported him. He and I eventually fell in love, but the Romans were not
happy about our love. They felt he was giving away the Roman Empire by allowing me control
over Egypt.
Fortune turned against us in 30 BC. Octavian was a man who was also in line for the throne of
the Roman Empire. He was not fond of Mark Antony or myself, and he declared war on Egypt.
He defeated my beloved Mark Antony and then had me arrested. At the age of 39 I died in honor
and was the last Pharaoh of Egypt.
FAMOUS QUOTATIONS OF CLEOPATRA
I will not be triumphed over.
All strange and terrible events are welcome, but comforts we despise.
Be it known that we, the greatest, are misthought.
In praising Antony I have dispraised Caesar.
Fool! Don't you see now that I could have poisoned you a hundred times had I been able
to live without you.
Celerity is never more admired than by the negligent.
My honour was not yielded, but conquered merely.
