Topic # 1 Google Me: A Discourse Analysis of the Worlds Leading Search Engine
A. Topic/Corpus Analyzed

B. Nature of Inquiry

The fact that Google is

becoming more and more
popular means that search
engines can potentially exert
a profound influence over the
ways people consume online
information.

Of particular interest are the

questions: How is technology
portrayed on the Google
blog? What issues does
Google identify as being most
important? How does Google
speak about information?
And finally, how does Google
construct the citizen subject
in its text?

C. The pedagogical
theories/principles involved
- Some educational theories
involve google as a search
engine aiding people through
the information which google
gives access to people. It
makes learning easier.

D. Research Findings
-

Hodson(2013), found out that:

- Google constructs the
company as a public
service company, and
information as a necessary
public good(Hodson,
2013, p.133)
- The ideal type of people
who would most likely use
their technology would be
the people who are
passive and searching.
- Google aims to make its
product the center of the
on-line lives of people and
to send its users to
potential advertizers.
- The examination of
Googles blog discourses
from 2006-2011 reveals
several distinct themes,
which can be connected to
the cultural assumptions

made by the thought

leaders who write on the
organizations blog.
Central is a strong belief
that technology is the
source of human progress
and that technological
development is inevitable.
Related to this belief is the
idea that access to ample
amounts of information
represents the solution to
many peoples problems.
In the blog discourse,
Google both assigns
profound value to
information, and also
constructs it as a public
service (Virilio, 1991, p. 2;
Gitlin, 2002). This forms
the basis of a worldview in
which information is king.
In the value system
portrayed in the blog
discourses, information
(accessed of course
through Googles search
engine) is the ultimate
public good.
E. Comments
- We strongly agree with the minds behind Google's popularity since they are doing it for the right reason which is to help humans
make their lives easier. We think that Google is really helping in making our lives much easier since it compiles a lot of data on

the internet. If it were not for google, the life of students, workers, and everyone in general, would be a pain in the neck since it
would be hard to find data in the internet, which is constantly growing and growing.
Topic # 2 `Ilm al-Tafsir and Critical Discourse Analysis: A Methodology Comparison

A. Topic/Corpus Analyzed

B. Nature of Inquiry

The similarities and

differences of `Ilm al-Tafsir,
which means the science of
exegesis, and Critical
Discourse Analysis (CDA),
with `Ilm al-Tasfir being used
in the understanding of the
contents of the holy Quran
and CDA being used to study
the organization of language
above sentence or above the
clause(Nordin, 2015, p.
132).

The study generally aims to

find answers to two specific
questions. The two questions
being How do there
similarities happen? Was
there any influence of one
methodology to the other?
(Nordin, 2015, p. 130).

C. The pedagogical
theories/principles involved
- 'Ilm al-Tafsir suggests that this
can establish learning from
the qur'an. 'Ilm al-Tafsir makes
the Qur'an as a linguistic
corpus database in order to
enhance faith and belief by
providing interpretations of
the word of God. CDA provides
analysis of the Qur'an and
relations to social processes
and practices.

D. Research Findings
-

The study was able to realize

the following things:
- According to Nordin(2015),
the seven elements of
methodology, being the
background, the suitability
of the verse, the linguistic
characteristics, the reasons
for text production, the
interpretation, the rhetoric
and the significane(p.
136), were both found in
`Ilm al-Tafsir and Critical
Discource Analysis.
- The main difference of the
two methodologies is their
goal. The goal of `Ilm alTafsir is not only to analyse
language data in order to
prove the existence of a
relationship between the
language and social
processes, but also to
prove that the language
can increase faith and trust
in Allah. In contrast, the

CDA methodology is to
criticise, expose, and find
weakness in the
discourser (Nordin, 2015,
p. 138).
Nordin(2015) found out
that To combine both
methodologies, it is
important to use an
adequate and accurate
framework that represent
the religious element in
the analysis(p. 139).

E. Comments
o We agree to the studies conducted. The two methodologies harness or strengthen the faith and belief of the people who read the
Qur'an (Muslims) by providing materials to support these. We think that even if these two methodologies are different, both of
them still have traits that both of them have. One being the fact that it was meant for aiding in research. We think that both
methodologies would be able to fulfill their duties to the researchers that use them in their studies.
