MCN

SITUATION 1: Maternal and Child health is a program of the department of health created to lessesn the
death of inftants and mother in the Philippines
1. What is the goal of this program?
a. Promote mother and infant health especially during the gravida stage
The Maternal Health Program is a set of actions and services administered by
the Department of Health to aid women before, during and after pregnancy. The
Philippines is tasked to reduce the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) by three quarters by
2015 to achieve its millennium development goal.
b. Training of local hilots
Training of local hilots is not the goal of the maternal and child health since it is focused
on the mother and the baby
c. Direct supervision of midwives
Midwives are responsible for the giving birth of the mother which is after pregnancy and
does not apply to the main goal of maternal and child health
d. Health teaching to mother regarding proper newborn care
Proper newborn care is also an important health teaching to the mother but it focuses
more on the after pregnancy, when the mother already gave birth to her baby. The
maternal health program of the DOH focuses on before, during and after pregnancy of the
mother.
** The goal of the MCHN program of the DOH is the PROMOTION AND MAINTENANCE OF
OPTIMUM HEALTH OF WOMAN AND THEIR NEWBORN. To achieve this goal, B,C and D are
all carried out. Even without the knowledge of the MCHN goal you SHOULD answer this question
correctly. Remember that GOALS are your plans or things you MUST ATTAIN while STRATEGIES are
those that must be done [ ACTIONS ] to attain your goal.
Looking at B,C and D they are all ACTIONS. Only A correctly followed the definition of a goal.
2. One philosophy of the maternal and child health nursing is:
MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH NURSING PHILOSOPHIES:
- Initiating cost containment
- Increasing alternative settings and styles for health care
- Include the family in health care
a. All pregnancy experiences are the same for all women
It is real and evident that all pregnancies have different experiences for all women.
b. Culture and religious practice have little effect on pregnancy of a woman
We all know that culture and religious practices have a big impact on the health
c. Pregnancy is a part of the life cycle but provides no meaning
For a woman, being pregnant is one of the most significant experience in their life that
although it is only a part of the life cycle, it provides a deep meaning in their lives. And it
is not part of the philosophies of maternal and child health nursing
d. The father is as important as the mother

Since maternal and Child health is only focused on the mother and the child, the father
must also be noticed as part of the team. The family members have a significant role to
play in the health care most especially the father that is also as important as the mother.
Knowing that not all individuals and pregnancy are the same for all women, you can
safely eliminate letter A. Personal, culture and religious attitudes influence the meaning
of pregnancy and that makes pregnancy unique for each individual. Culture and religious
practice have a great impact on pregnancy, eliminate B. Pregnancy is meaningful to each
individuals, not only the mother but also the father and the family and the father of the
child is as important as the mother. MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH IS FAMILY
CENTERED and thid will guide you in correctly answering D.
3. In maternal care, the PHN responsibility is;
a. To secure all information that would be needing in birth certificate
It is not the responsibility of the PHN to secure all the info needed in the birth certificate
b. To protect the baby from tetanus neonatorum by immunizing the mother with DPT
It is only focused on the baby and not with the both of them
c. To reach all pregnant woman
The sole objective of the MCHN of the DOH is to REACH ALL PREGNANT
WOMEN AND GIVE SUFFICIENT CARE TO ENSURE A HEALTHY
PREGNANCY AND THE BIRTH OF A FULL TERM HEALTH BABY. As not to
confuse this with the GOAL of the MCHN,
The OBJECTIVE should answer the GOAL, they are different.
GOAL : to promote and maintain optimum health for women and their newborn
OBJECTIVE : By reaching all pregnant women to give sufficient care ensuring healthy
pregnancy and baby.
d. To assess nutritional status of existing children
There is no relation between the nutritional status of the existing children to the maternal
and child health care for the mother and newborn
4. This is used when rendering prenatal care in the RHU. It serves as a guide in identification of risk
factors:
a. Underfive clinic chart
The under five clinic chart is where preventive, promotive, curative, referral and
educational services are provided for children ages under 5 years old in one roof
b. Home based mothers record
The HBMR is used in rendring prenatal care as guide in identifying risk factors. It
contains health promotion message and information on the danger signs of pregnancy.
c. Client list of mother under prenatal care
The list of mothers under prenatal care is only a list does not serve as a guide in
identifying risk factors
d. Target list of woman under TT vaccination
The target list of woman under TT vaccination also does not serve as a guide in
