1.0 INTRODUCTION
Cable T.V providers in advanced countries are gradually making conventional GSM and CDMA
operators run out of business, this is because the consumers have started to realize that it is cheaper to
make voice call through the same network that provides them with seamless streaming. Due to
technological advancement it is no longer acceptable for a network to say its own network carries data
while another says its own is for voice. We are now in the age of triple play which is voice, video and
data on the same network, hence the choice of my project topic;
ANALYSIS, DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A MULTIMEDIA CAPABLE
INTERNETWORK (With Special Emphasis On Mobility and Remote Location).
It is worth noting that the network in question here is not a simple network of few workstations in an
office or building but rather a network of networks spanning cities, also worth noting is the type of
workstations which is not just the conventional desktops and laptops but also to include mobile
phones, PDAs, electronic devices such as refrigerators, microwave ovens, televisions, electric shaving
clippers and the likes. A great deal of attentiveness will be on bandwidth and mobility so the wireless
medium will be the idea choice especially at the last mile.
Recent research or breakthrough in this field of study is the recent introduction of the 802.11n into the
Wi-fi network which is capable of delivering an amazing 100mbps unlike the old 802.11g/b which
delivers 54mbps at maximum rate. Another breakthrough is the WiMAX which is an IP based,
wireless broadband access technology that provides performance similar to Wi-fi networks and a
coverage and quality of service of cellular network. The WiMAX can provide broadband access with
up to 30 miles for fixed stations and can also support Wi-fi data.
2.0 PROJECT MOTIVATION
Apart from self interest, my motivation for this project comes from the quest for providing a seamless
network service with remarkable speed and sufficient bandwidth to aid information dissemination
which has lead to constant upgrade of existing network. Another major motivation is the current shift
to an all IP based network by telecommunication services this of course is aimed at reducing cost of
service while maintaining standard and quality. The major goal at the end of this project is to highlight

the challenges, produce a detailed analysis, construct an elaborate design and probably implement a
design on a simulator. This is to ensure that anyone working on a real life scenario could have
something authentic to work with.
3.0 PROJECT OBJECTIVES
Clearly stated in the project topic are the objectives of the project. I intend to analyze, design and
implement an enterprise internetwork that is capable of supporting multimedia. Special emphasis will
be laid on mobility and remote location. Because of the emphasis on mobility, I intend to deploy
mostly wireless at the last-mile and for remote location, I will be assuming no existing infrastructure.
The overall goal of the project will be to produce a detailed report and a practical model that anyone in
a real life situation could work with. The project will be in three phases which are:
Phase 1: Analysis

Here I shall be giving a brief overview of where internetworking is coming from, where it is
now and where it should be in a couple of years

I shall be making a broad analysis of circuit and packet switching

I will be stating the essence and effect of a multimedia capable IP internetwork.

I will be making a detailed documentation on recent breakthroughs in internetwork

infrastructure and technology like the 802.11n and the WiMAX respectively

Also covered here will be the various transmission media.

Phase 2: Design

This phase starts with the explanation of the possible option for the provision of an
internetwork, wi-fi, WiMAX, LTE, ISDN, ATM and the likes.

Various topologies which include the mesh, ring, star/switch, hierarchical and the hybrid
networks will be designed to cover a wide area network

Infrastructure such as access point, cables and antennas will be put to use in different modes
with their pros and cons covered in detail.

Different designs, equipments and infrastructures shall be used for different environment for
maximum efficiency.

A detail documentation of a construction of a base station in different designs will be made.

Phase 3: Implementation

Here I plan to employ a couple of techniques obtained from my analysis and design on a real
life scenario.

The chosen real life scenario will be to simulate an enterprise network to cover the four Federal
Universities of Technology in Nigeria.

The implementation will focus mainly on mobility and remote location

4.0 PROJECT METHODOLOGY

I intend to carry out my simulation at the implementation phase on packet tracer simulator.

My network design diagram at the design will be achieved using application called Edraw soft.

The worldwide acknowledge Enterprise Composite Model will be put to use at my design and
implementation phase while a brief explanation of it will be made at phase 1 of my project.

I intend to use the technique of a hybrid network which is a combination of many types of
network during my implementation.

Voice and video applications will also be use to show how VoIP and IP video works.

5.0 PROJECT METHODOLOGY

At the end of the project, I hope to have developed a simulation which will not only be useful but
serve as a guide to anyone working on an enterprise network. I also hope to have improved the
worldwide acknowledge Enterprise Composite Model to support remote location where there is no
previously existing infrastructure as the case is in most part of Africa. I also hope to have improved the
model to support mobility which will be achieved by deploying mostly wireless network with
sufficient bandwidth to support multimedia at the last mile.
