HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT BECOMING AN
ELECTRONEURODIAGNOSTIC TECHNOLOGIST?
Electroneurodiagnostic Technologists have a very exciting and rewarding job. As an

Electroneurodiagnostic Technologist you get to find out what is really going on inside someone’s

head.

Main Duties

Some of the main duties of an Electroneurodiagnostic Technologist are taking the

medical history from a patient, preparing the patient for the test, and then fitting electrodes to

their head. Once those are completed you will then monitor the patient’s electrical activity of the

brain and nervous system and report your findings to a Neurologist. You are also responsible for

testing and maintaining the equipment you used during the procedure.

Procedures

There are six main procedures you will use as an Electroneurodiagnostic Technologist:

1. EEG – record electrical activity of brainwaves on a graph or computer

2. PSG – uses EEG to identify dysfunction during sleep

3. NCV – recording of electrical potentials from the peripheral nerves

4. EP – nervous systems electrical response to specific stimuli

5. LTM – record EEG brainwaves to help diagnose neurological dysfunction

6. ORMON – record electrical nervous system activity during surgery on a patient

Purpose of the Procedures

The data that you gather as an Electroneurodiagnostic Technologist is interpreted by

specially trained physicians to try and determine the best treatment for the patient. The data can

be used to help diagnose conditions such as brain tumors, strokes, epilepsy, and sleep disorders.

Work Environment

Some of the places you may find an Electroneurodiagnostic Technologist working are

private neurologist’s offices, neurology laboratories, and psychiatric facilities. The main place

you will find them is in neurology departments in hospitals.

Education

You are not necessarily required to have any college education to become an

Electroneurodiagnostic Technologist since some facilities provide on the job training. However,

most of employers would like to have applicants who have an associate’s degree from an

accredited program. These are normally one and two year programs taught at community

colleges.

There are many great aspects to becoming an Electroneurodiagnostic Technologist. You

have many opportunities for job placement due to the wide range of procedures and different

types of studies. Also, the pay scale is very good. The best part though, is you will be able to

have the satisfaction of helping others. So if these are some of the things you are looking for in a

career, then becoming an Electroneurodiagnostic Technologist may be the right job for you.
