Riba in Quran

1. First revelation ( Surah

al-Rum, Verse 39)
‫اس‬ ِ َّ
‫ن‬ ‫ال‬ ‫ال‬
ِ ‫و‬
َ #‫م‬ْ َ ‫ا‬ ْ
‫ي‬ ٓ ‫ف‬
ِ ‫ا‬۟ ‫و‬# َ #‫ب‬
ُ ْ‫ر‬ ‫ي‬
َ ِّ ‫ل‬ ‫ا‬ ‫ب‬ ً ِّ‫ر‬ ْ‫ِّن‬
‫م‬ ‫م‬
ْ ُ
‫ت‬ ْ
‫ي‬ َ
‫ت‬ ‫ا‬ٰ ‫َو َمٓا‬
ٰ ٰ
‫ و ٍة‬#‫ٓا ات ْيت ْم مِّنْ زك‬##‫ َد ِ ۚ َو َم‬#‫وا ِع ْن‬#ْ #‫َفاَل َيرْ ُب‬
َ ُ َ ‫هّٰللا‬
ُ ْ ۗ ٰ ‫هّٰللا‬
‫ ِعف ْو َن‬##‫ُض‬ ْ ‫ك ُه ُم الم‬ َ ‫ٕى‬#ِِٕ ‫ َه ِ فاول‬##ْ‫ ُد ْو َن َوج‬##ْ‫ُت ِري‬
ُ َ
39‫؀‬
The interest that you give in order to increase the wealth
of the people, does not increase in the sight of Allah; and
the Zakat that you pay in order to win Allah's approval, its
payers do indeed increase their wealth.

2. Second revelation
(Surah al-Nisa , Verse
161)
‫َّواَ ْخ ِذ ِه ُم الرِّ ٰبوا َو َق ْد ُنھ ُْوا َع ْن ُه َواَ ْكلِ ِه ْم‬
‫اط ِل َۭواَعْ َت ْد َنا لِ ْل ٰك ِف ِري َْن‬
ِ ‫اس ِب ْال َب‬
ِ ‫مْوا َل ال َّن‬
َ َ‫ا‬
١٦١‫ِم ْن ُه ْم َع َذا ًبا اَلِـــ ْي ًما ؁‬
and for their charging Riba (usury or interest) while they
were forbidden from it, and for their devouring of the
properties of the people by false means. We have
prepared, for the disbelievers among them, a painful
punishment.

3. Third revelation (Surah

Al ’Imran, Verse 130-132)

‫ َعا ًفا‬# ‫ض‬ ْ َ‫وا ا‬##‫ٰ ٓيا َ ُّي َھا الَّ ِذي َْن ٰا َم ُن ْوا اَل َتاْ ُكلُوا الرِّ ٰ ٓب‬
‫و َن‬####ُ ْ ُ ُ َّ َ ‫هّٰللا‬
ْ ‫وا َ ل َعلك ْم تفلِح‬####ُ‫ َع َف ًة ۠ َوا َّتق‬####‫ُّض‬ ٰ ‫م‬
‫ت‬ ْ ‫ َّد‬##‫ار الَّ ِت ْٓى ا ُ ِع‬ َ ‫َوا َّتقُوا ال َّن‬ ١٣٠‫ۚ؁‬
‫وا هّٰللا‬######ُ‫ واَط ْيع‬١٣١‫ريْن ۚ؁‬######‫ل ْل ٰكف‬
َ ِ َ َ ِ ِ ِ
١٣٢‫َوالرَّ س ُْو َل َل َعلَّ ُك ْم ُترْ َحم ُْو َن ۙ؁‬

O you, who believe, do not eat up the amounts acquired

through Riba (interest), doubled and multiplied. Fear Allah,
so that you may be successful, and fear the Fire that has
been prepared for the disbelievers. Obey Allah and the
Messenger, so that you may be blessed.

4. Fourth revelation
(Surah al-Baqarah, Verses
275-281)
‫اَلَّ ِذي َْن َياْ ُكلُ ْو َن الرِّ ٰبوا اَل َيقُ ْوم ُْو َن ِااَّل َك َما‬
‫ك‬َِ ‫َّط ُه ال َّشي ْٰطنُ ِم َن ْال َمسِّ ٰذل‬ ُ ‫َيقُ ْو ُم الَّ ِذيْ َي َت َخب‬
‫ِبا َ َّن ُھ ْم َقالُ ْٓوا ِا َّن َما ْال َب ْي ُع ِم ْث ُل الرِّ ٰبوا ۘ َواَ َح َّل‬
ٌ‫هّٰللا ُ ْال َبي َْع َو َحرَّ َم الرِّ ٰبوا ۭ َف َمنْ َج ۗا َءهٗ َم ْو ِع َظة‬
‫ف ۭ َواَ ْمرُهٗ ٓ ِا َلى‬ َ ‫مِّنْ رَّ ِّبهٖ َفا ْن َت ٰهى َف َل ٗه َما َس َل‬
َّ ۗ ٰ ُ ‫هّٰللا‬
‫ار ۚ ُھ ْم‬ ِ ‫ك اَصْ ٰحبُ الن‬ َ ‫ٕى‬#ِِٕ ‫ِ ۭ َو َمنْ َعادَ َفاول‬
٢٧٥‫ِف ْي َها ٰخلِ ُد ْو َن ؁‬
But those who devour interest become like the one whom
Satan has bewitched and maddened by his touch. They
have been condemned to this condition because they say,
"Trade is just like interest”, whereas Allah has made trade
lawful and interest unlawfu1. Henceforth, if one abstains

from taking interest after receiving this admonition from his

Lord, no legal action will be taken against him regarding
the interest he had devoured before; his case shall
ultimately go to Allah. But if one repeats the same crime
after this, He shall go to Hell, where he shall abide forever.

‫ت ۭ َوهّٰللا ُ اَل‬ ٰ ‫هّٰللا‬

َّ ‫مْح ُق ُ الرِّ بوا َويُرْ ِبي‬
ِ ‫دَق‬##‫الص‬ ٰ َ ‫َي‬
٢٧٦‫ار اَ ِثي ٍْم ؁‬ ٍ َّ
‫ف‬ َ
‫ك‬ ‫ل‬
َّ ُ
‫ك‬ ُّ‫ُي ِحب‬

Allah deprives interest of all blessing and develops charity;

and Allah does not like an ungrateful, sinful person.

‫امُوا‬##‫ت َواَ َق‬ ّ ٰ ‫وا‬##ُ‫ِانَّ الَّ ِذي َْن ٰا َم ُن ْوا َو َع ِمل‬

ِ ‫لِ ٰح‬# ‫الص‬
‫الز ٰكو َة َل ُھ ْم اَجْ ُر ُھ ْم ِع ْن َد َرب ِِّه ْم‬َّ ‫الص َّٰلو َة َو ٰا َتوُ ا‬
ْ
‫و َن‬####### ‫ف َع َلي ِْه ْم َواَل ُھ ْم َيحْ َز ُن‬ ٌ ‫ ْو‬#######‫ۚ َواَل َخ‬

As to those who believe and do good deeds, establish the

Salat and pay the Zakat, they will most surely have their
reward with their Lord and they will have nothing to fear
nor to grieve.

‫هّٰللا‬
‫ا َب ِق َي‬##‫وا َ َوذر ُْوا َم‬##ُ‫وا ا َّتق‬##‫ا الَّ ِذي َْن ٰا َم ُن‬##‫ٰ ٓيا َ ُّي َه‬
َ
٢٧٨‫ِم َن الرِّ ٰ ٓبوا ِانْ ُك ْن ُت ْم م ُّْؤ ِم ِني َْن ؁‬

O Believers fear Allah and give up that interest which is

still due to you, if you are true Believers;

‫ب مِّن هّٰللا‬ ْ ُ‫ ِانْ لَّ ْم َت ْف َعل‬####‫َف‬

ِ َ ٍ ْ‫ ر‬####‫اْ َذ ُن ْوا ِب َح‬####‫وا َف‬####
ۚ ‫ َوالِ ُك ْم‬##ْ‫ ْولِهٖ ۚ َو ِانْ ُت ْب ُت ْم َف َل ُك ْم ُرء ُْوسُ اَم‬##‫َو َر ُس‬
٢٧٩‫اَل َت ْظلِم ُْو َن َواَل ُت ْظ َلم ُْو َن ؁‬
but if you do not do so, then you are warned of the
declaration of war against you by Allah and His
Messenger. If, however, you repent even now (and forego
interest), you are entitled to your principal; do no wrong,
and no wrong will be done to you.

َ ‫ َرةٌ ِا ٰلى َمي‬##‫ َر ٍة َف َن ِظ‬##‫ان ُذ ْو ع ُْس‬##

ۭ ‫ َر ٍة‬##‫ْس‬ َ ‫َو ِانْ َك‬
ْ ‫ ٌر لَّ ُك ْم ِانْ ُك ْن ُت ْم َتعْ َلم‬###ْ‫ َّدقُ ْوا َخي‬###‫ص‬
‫و َن‬###ُ َ ‫َواَنْ َت‬
٨٠‫؁‬
If there is one in misery, then (the creditor should allow)
deferment till (his) ease, and that you forgo it as alms is
much better for you, if you really know.

ُ‫ ِه ِا َلى هّٰللا ِ ۼ ث َّم‬#‫و َن ِف ْي‬#ْ #‫ا ُترْ َج ُع‬##‫وا َي ْو ًم‬#ْ #ُ‫َوا َّتق‬
ْ ْ ٰ
ْ َ ‫اَل‬ ْ
‫و َن‬##‫ َبت َو ُھ ْم يُظل ُم‬#‫س مَّا ك َس‬ َ ٍ ‫ ُّل نف‬#‫ُت َوفى ك‬
َ ُ ّ
٢٨١‫ۧ؁‬

Be fearful of a day when you

shall be returned to Allah, then every person shall be paid,
in full, what he has earned, and they shall not be wronged.
