1) A tubular heat exchanger is to be designed for cooling oil from a temperature of
80 to 30 C by a large of stagnant water which may be assumed to remain
constant at a temperature of 20 C. The heat transfer surface consist of 30m long
straight tube of 20 mm inside diameter. The oil (specific gravity= 2.5 kJ/kg K and
sp.gravity = 0.8) flows through the cylindrical tube with an average velocity of 50
m/s. Calculate the overall heat transfer coefficient for the oil cooler. (Ans. U=0.2987
kJ/m2-s-C)
2) A counter flow concentric tube heat exchanger is used to cool the lubricating oil
of a large industrial gas turbine engine. The oil flows through the tube at 0.19 kg/s
(Cp = 2.18 kJ/kg K), and the coolant water flows in the annulus in the opposite
direction at the rate of 0.15 kg/s (C p= 4.18 kJ/kg K).the oil enters the coolant at 425 K
and leaves 345 While the coolant enters at 285 K. How long must the tube be made
to perform this duty if the heat transfer coefficient from oil to tube surface is 2250
W/m2 K and from tube surface to water is 5650 W/m2 K? The tube has a mean die of
12.5mm and its wall presents negligible resistance to heat transfer. (Ans. L =7.21
m)
3) A heat exchanger is to be designed to condense 8 kg/s of an organic liquid ( T sat =
80 C ; hfg = 600 kJ/kg ) with cooling water available at 15 C and at flow rate of 60
kg/s. The overall heat transfer coefficient is 480 W/m 2 K. Calculate (a) the number of
tube required .The tubes are to be of 25m diameter and 2 mm thickness and 4.85 m
length. (b) The number of tube passes. The velocity of the cooling water is not
exceeded 2 m/s. (Ans. a) N=478 b) 6 passes)
4) Cold water enters a counter flow heat exchanger at 10 C at a rate of 8 kg/s,
where it is heated by hot water stream that enters that heat exchanger at 70 C at
rate of 2 kg/s. Assuming the maximum heat transfer rate and the outlet
temperature of the cold and the hot water streams for this limiting case. (Ans. Q max
= 502 kW, Tci=25 C ,Thi= 10 C)
5) A test is conducted to determine the overall heat transfer coefficient in a shelland-tube oil-to-water heat transfer coefficient that has 24 tubes of internal dia of
1.2 cm and length of 2 m in single shell. Cold water (C p== 4180 J/kg.K) enters the
tubes at a rate of 3 kg/s and leaves at 55 C. Oil (C p=2150 J/kg.K) flows through the
shell and is cooled from 120 C to 45 C. Determine the overall heat transfer
coefficient Ui of this HE based on the inner surface area of the tubes. (Ans. 8.31
kW/m2 K)
6) A thin wall double pipe counter flow heat exchanger is to be used to cool oil
(Cp=2200 J/kg.K) from 150 C to 50 C at a rate of 2.5 kg/s by water (C p= 4810

J/kg.K) that enters at 22 C at a rate of 1.5 kg/s .the dia of tube is 2.5 cm, and its
length is 6 m.Determine the overall heat transfer coefficient of this heat exchanger.

1) sketch the temperature length curves for a counter flow and parallel flow heat
exchangers when i) Cc > Ch ii) Cc = Ch iii)Cc <Ch . A counter flow heat exchanger of

2) A home air conditioner system uses a counter flow heat exchanger to cool 0.8
kg/s of air from 45 C to 15 C. The cooling is accomplished by a stream of cooling
water that enters the system with 0.5kg/s flow rate and 8 C temperature .If the
overall heat transfer coefficient is 35 W/m2 K, what heat exchanger area is
required? If the same air flow is maintained while the water flow rate is reduced to
half, how much will be the percentage reduction in heat transfer? Use effectiveness
NTU approach. (Ans. a) 44.10 m2 b) 6.27%)
3) Water (sp heat= 4 kJ/kg K) enters a cross flow exchanger (both fluids unmixed) at
15 C and flow at the rate of 7.5 kg/s .It cools air (C p = 1 kJ/kg K)flowing at the rate
of 10 kg/s from an inlet temperature of 120 C .For an overall heat transfer
coefficient 780 W/m2 K and an exchanger surface area of 240 m 2 .Determine the
total heat transfer and the outlet temperature of air .How these results would be
affected if a 1 -10(one shell pass and ten tube pass) heat exchanger is employed?
(Ans. th2= 21.3 C b) th2= 32.85 C)
4) Hot oil (Cp=1005 J/kg.K) enters a cross flow heat exchanger at 20 C at a rate of 3
kg/s, where it is heated by hot water stream (C p=4190 J/kg.K) that enters the heat
exchanger at 70 C at a rate of 1 kg/s. Determine the maximum heat transfer rate
and the outlet temp of both fluids for that case.
