Now that the holiday season is over and people are T h r i f t St o r e N e w s
a t t e m p t i n g t o c a r r y o n w i t h t h e i r N e w Ye a r ’s r e s o l u t i o n s
and getting their lives organized, I would like to take a

moment to reflect on the amazing generosity of the  
citizens of Porterville and the surrounding communities.  
I would like to personally thank you all!

As we were preparing for the Project Homeless Connect,


I was contacted by Gail Grasmick who is the advisor for Springtime is a time to say

Project Homeless Connect and the students decided to space in your home and simplify your life but all
also collect needed items for those homeless proceeds from your donations will continue to help
individuals. All I can say is the students of the Builders s u p p o r t o u r l o c a l w o m e n ’s s h e l t e r.

recipients of these generous gifts and thoughts that come along with your continued support.

T h e Wo m e n ’s S h e l t e r h a s b e e n v e r y f u l l w i t h w o m e n a n d c h i l d r e n w h o c o m e t o u s d u e t o
homelessness or domestic violence. For the past three months we have had 30 or more beds filled
o n a d a i l y b a s i s . We h a v e b e e n l u c k y t o h a v e t w o n e w v o l u n t e e r s a b o a r d . We h a v e o n e h e r e a t t h e
shelter and the other volunteer at the front office. Melinda Martinez is a client advocate who is
wonderful with our women and children. She has been learning so much since she began with us.
She feels that this job is rewarding. At first, she was very nervous about being accepted by the
f a m i l i e s w e s e r v e . H o w e v e r, s h e i s g l a d s h e c a m e t o w o r k a t t h e Wo m e n ’s S h e l t e r b e c a u s e s h e
now realizes that the families we work with are grateful. Once again we are happy to have her
w i t h h e r b e a u t i f u l s m i l e a n d e n t h u s i a s m . We l c o m e t o C C F C C M e l i n d a !

Reaching Out

Perhaps you’ve seen the CCFCC ads in the local newspapers or on the side of the city buses. The ads were part of
an outreach effort funded by a grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. CCFCC received a small
grant to reach out to victims of domestic violence who may be unaware of the many services available to them
t h r o u g h t h e F a m i l y C r i s i s C e n t e r. T h e s e f u n d s p r o v i d e d C C F C C w i t h t h e o p p o r t u n i t y t o u s e a d v e r t i s e m e n t
methods that are normally unaffordable to us. There were 30 and 60 second “spots” on KJUG and La Maquina
Musical radio stations, Porterville city bus ads, outreach brochures in English and Spanish, new agency brochures
in English and Spanish, newspaper ads in both English and Spanish and several agency presentations to small
groups.
