Workshop Introduction
What are the Workshop Goals?
Give you, the engineers, the best introduction possible in
mechatronic system design. Empower each and every one!
Show the importance of human-centered, model-based
multidisciplinary design in modern engineering practice.
Show the relevance of mechatronics to innovation.

How Will This Happen?

Not a Class or Lecture! Not About Me! All About YOU!
Interactive and Participant-Focused.
All about fostering innovation & life-long learning, enhancing
understanding and insight, and creating collaboration now and in
the future among you.

Engineering Problem Solving

Engineers are problem solvers.

The only way to learn problem solving is to do it!
Only a human can solve problems; the computer is a tool.
Design problems are the heart of engineering. To solve
them requires creativity, teamwork, and broad knowledge.
The approach to solving an engineering problem should
proceed in an orderly, stepwise fashion, but often problem
solving is an iterative procedure.
To become a good problem solver, an engineer must have:
knowledge, experience, learning skills, motivation, and
communication and leadership skills. The ability to logically
break a problem into pieces is most important.

The Right Mindset

Technical expertise without the right motivation and without a
vision will not lead to successful designs.
Focus on the need; become an expert in the problem and solve
the right problem. View problems as opportunities to excel! Dont
ask the customer what they think they need, ask what the
problem is! Dont overlook the big picture; look at the problem
and its surroundings; test the limits (big, small, fast, slow, ) as
you explore the problem; never stop asking Why?
Find inspiration from outstanding examples products, people,
companies, methods. Embrace the design attitude: be willing to
take risks, try different things, extend yourself, and learn from
failure. Identify multiple solutions to the problem; it is highly
unlikely that the first solution identified will be the best solution.

Myths of Innovation

The Eureka Moment

Build On-Line Forums And They Will Come
Open Innovation Is The Future
Pay Is Paramount
Bottom-Up Innovation is Best
Conclusion
Innovation is the lifeblood of any large
organization. But, there are no quick fixes,
panaceas, or one-size-fits-all solutions.

Innovation Maturity Level

Leadership & Strategy: The CEO champions innovation.
Customer Focus: The company sees its customers as its
most important stakeholder.
Innovation: The company has at least one corporate goal
that drives innovation; there is an innovation process and it
is used on all projects.
Management and Training: Project leaders bust through
walls. They are the companys future GMs.
Culture and Environment: People are empowered and are
seen as value creators; excellent communications.
Decision Making: Decisions are made quickly and delegated
down.
