~BUSINESS MEETING~
The meeting was opened with a robust ring of
the bell by President Roger, and his
observations that we have been serving the
community and the world for about 49 years.
Kevin Reneau told us about some obscure
events that occurred on March 1, gave some
related quotes, and led us in the Pledge to the
Flag.
Guests today were: Tom Rust, Principal of
Camino Pablo Elementary School, and
Melissa Fahey, a teaching assistant at that

John Erickson, Joan Bruzzone, and the Rajah

A Paul Harris Fellowship was presented to

Joan Bruzzone by John Erickson, who has
known Joan and her late husband Russ since
he and Mary Sue opened their Moraga
Hardware business in 1967. He remarked that
Joan and Russ were exceptional in their efforts
to build the very nice Moraga that we know
today.

~~RECOGNITIONS~~
Mike McCluer was happy because his
daughter got engaged recently . . . . Gary
Irwin gave one buck for his #1 Jayhawks
basketball team . . . .Roger Gregory had a
Happy Buck for the St. Marys mens
basketball success this year . . . . Frank May
attended the 21st birthday party of a man who
was born on a Feb 29, even though he was

about 84 years old. . . . Angelo Costanza

told that he now owned two historic desks
formerly owned by two eminent justices that
he knows, and gave a High Five for it.

~~EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH~~

The next e-Waste collection is on

Saturday, April 30th. Another opportunity
for fun in the sun and doughnuts, so come
on out!
The Rajah asked for volunteers to host the
Last Friday of the Month Social, and actually
got two volunteers: the Simonsens for
Friday March 25 and Bill Eames for April
29. Mark your calendars!
The Rajah read a letter of thanks from a
recipient of our donations to Lake County fire
relief, who said the money helped restore the
soul and structure of their community.

Kevin, EOM Melissa Fahey, & Tom Rust

Our latest Employee of the Month is Melissa

Fahey, a 14 year employee of the Moraga
School District who works as a teachers
assistant dealing with special needs children
at Camino Pablo Elementary School.
Principal Tom Rust, her sponsor, spoke very
highly of her effectiveness. She received a
Certificate and some nice gift cards donated
by local merchants.

~~ANNOUNCEMENTS~~
President Roger urged us all to attend the
District Conference in Woodland on April
1st through 3rd. This event is always a fun
time and an opportunity to see beyond our
local Club. Check out the District Rotary
website at www.rotary5160.org .

Debbie Roessler cleverly outbid Gary Irwin to

get the March Fine Free Hat for just $50 in very
slow bidding. . . .
Frank May mentioned that our premier
fundraising event is right on top of us on
March 12th so please get your dinner tickets
purchased, your horses bought, and your
auction donations all shined up and ready to
go. There will be one more prep meeting on
March 7th at Cliffs Moraga Royale at 5:30
pm, so please attend! Let Frank May know
if you are able to work at the event. We
need all the help we can get!!
The meeting ended with Angelo Costanza
having the winning ticket but the magic
marble eluded him!!

~~THE PROGRAM~~
Our speaker was the Principal of Campolindo
High School, John Walker. He grew up in
Kensington and graduated from El Cerrito High
School, and has been in his current job for
about four years.

About 75% of the students take one or more of

the 20 Advanced Placement courses offered.
The two newest AP courses, Art History and
Biotechnology, are proving to be very popular.
Campolindo has adopted the federal Common
Core program.
Campo has 54 extracurricular clubs, 24 sports
teams, and 16 performing arts groups. The
football team was the Div 3 State Champion in
2014, and played but lost in the 2015
Championship game. Their Choir sang at an
event in Chicago this year, and sang at
Carnegie Hall in New York two years ago. The
Symphonic Band also played at a concert in
Chicago.
The Rajah with Principal John Walker

Campolindo currently enrolls 1305 students,

which makes it a relatively small school. This
number will probably increase in the future due
to growing enrollment at Joaquin Moraga
Intermediate School, the largest feeder school.
This enrollment is about 100 students more
than at Miramonte and about 100 less than at
Acalanes. Growth of high school students in
Walnut Creek will probably require redistricting
to move the student growth to the western
schools in the District.
Everyone is pleased that 99% of Campolindo
graduates seek higher education, and about
80% at four year colleges. Many others attend
Diablo Valley College, and transition after two
years to a traditional university.
Campolindo has teaching faculty of 75, with
average tenure of about 15 years; this provides
faculty stability unusual in most high schools.

Campolindo's Academic Decathlon Team has

won the Medium Size Schools state decathlon
award in 2013, advancing to the online national
championship while placing third in Division III
and winning a most improved team award in
the process. At the 2013 Online National
Championship held April 4 and 26, the
Cougars won first place, in the process earning
the first national title for Campolindo in any
competition
and
the
first
national
championship in Academic Decathlon for any
school in Northern California.
