FOREWORD
This publication is a compilation of vital information of the citys demographic and socio-economic
characteristics. It presents latest available information on population, individual and household
characteristics, housing and economic indicators. Momentarily, the 2007 Census of Population
data is available only up to the population count hence, other characteristics are not presented.
The coming out of this profile answers the growing demand of small area statistics in local level
particularly at the barangay level in selected socio-economic and demographic variables useful
for its planning and policy formulation. This is also useful in various researches, social or business
researches that would be helpful in assessing the citys progress.
Data came from published publications of the National Statistics Office and other secondary
sources from the City Planning and Development Office-General Santos City.
NSO-SOCSARGEN wishes to extend the sincerest gratitude to everyone who helped in the
successful completion of this profile.

OVERVIEW OF GENERAL SANTOS CITY
1.1 History
General Santos City was formerly called as Buayan District and became a municipality of South
Cotabato by virtue of Republic Act No. 82 in January 1948. Its history begun on February 27,
1939 when the first Christian settlers led by General Paulino Santos landed on the shores of
Sarangani Bay together with 62 first batchers.
Economic growth in the area has been apparent with the establishment of the basic institutions
and infrastructures and the construction of roads and the establishment of multi-million companies
such as Standard Fruits Company (STAFILCO and Coca-Cola Bottling Company and the
establishment of first radio station in 1964. The municipality was classified then as a fourth class
municipality. House Bill 5862 was filed converting General Santos Municipality into a city and
renaming it to Rajah Buayan City. However, the Bill was rejected. It was only in 1968 that the
municipality turned into a city through the passage of Republic Act 5412. More schools were put
up in this time including the establishment of government hospital, public market, major streets
and highways and the building of bridges and the construction of the new city hall. Undeniably,
with this development, the city became a first class city since 1975 based on its income.
1.2 General Characteristics and Geographic Boundaries
General Santos City lies at the southern part of
the Philippines. It is located between 1251'
and 12517' east longitude and between 558'
and 620' north latitude. The city is southeast of
Manila, southeast of Cebu and southwest of
Davao. The municipalities of Alabel, Malungon
and Maasim of Sarangani Province and the
municipalities of Polomolok and T'boli of South
Cotabato surround the city (CPDO-GSC).
1.2.1
Political Subdivision
The City belongs to the First Congressional District of South Cotabato and is one of the 5 cities of
SOCCSKSARGEN Region. Currently, the city has 26 barangays (CPDO-GSC).
1.2.2

1.2.3 Topography
Majority of the entire land area constitutes wide flat lands stretching northeast of the city and
undulating terrain. Mt. Matutum, towards the North, towers at 2,293 meters above sea level. Mt.
Parker, at the Southwestern part of South Cotabato, towers at 2,040 meters above sea level
(CPDO-GSC).
1.2.4 Natural Resources
There are six sluggish rivers draining the city. There are also six creeks, three large cold springs
and several minor springs that have potentials as sources of potable water. Underground water is
usually shallow.
Uncertain quantities of mineral deposits are present in the city. Such minerals are limestone, iron
sand, sulfur, copper, gold, nitrate, luminate, rutile and guano. Abundant sand and gravel are being
quarried at the Silway, Siguel and Buayan rivers (CPDO-GSC).
1.3 Number and Population of Urban and Rural Barangays
General Santos City, a highly urbanized city has 26 barangays with the addition of 9 barangays
from 1990. In 2000, most of the barangays were classified as urban with 65%, while 34.6% were
classified as rural barangays. However, comparing its proportion against the 1990, it can be
noted that only 17.6% were classified as rural while 82.4% classified as urban barangays. With
the increasing trend in the population and with the creation of new barangays, the urbanity of a
certain area is affected.
Urbanity concept in the barangay level is an indicator of economic progress of a certain area. A
certain barangay is considered urban if its poblacion or district has a street pattern, with at least
six establishments (commercial, manufacturing, recreational and/or personal services and with at
least three of the following: a town hall, church or chapel with religious services at least once a
month, a public plaza, park or cemetery, a market place or building where trading activities are
carried on at least once a week, a public building like school, hospital, puericulture and health
center or library and regardless of population size.

2000 and 3.53 percent in 2000-2007.
2000
The declining rate
could be attributed to the declining fertility as discussed in the later chapter. If the rate continues
at 3.53 percent, the population of General Santos City is expected to double and reached
1.06million in a span of 19.6 years increasing at about 54,035 persons every year.

Average Parity of Ever-Married Women aged 45 to 49 was also considered as a fertility measure.
This refers to the number of children ever-born by a woman in her entire life.
Table 2.11 presents statistics on the average parity of ever-married women aged 45 to 49 years
old. The data makes use of the 2000 Census of Population and Housing results, which asked the
respondents if any living children had been born by women aged 45 to 49 years in the households
or the total number of children ever born by women in their entire life. Women aged 45-49 years
of age considered to have reached or are reaching menopausal stage and no longer pregnant.
Therefore, their number of children born is found substantial and their parity is a measure of
completed fertility.

The table above shows the number of live births in General Santos City from 2004 to 2007 by
sex. It indicates that generally more males are born than females as illustrated in Figure 2.C.
This implies that there are still more males than females in the city or the sex ratio at birth is high.
In 2004, for every 100 females who were born, 109 males were also born. In 2005, there were
110 males for every 100 females born. In 2006, there was a decrease in the sex ratio to 108
males per 100 females born in the city and still the same in 2007 (108).
Marriage
Marriage is one indicator of population boom. The occurrences of marriages result to high
incidence of birth occurrences or high fertility rate. Table 2.12 below shows the number of evermarried women 15 to 49 years old by age at first marriage. In 2000, of the total 70,001 evermarried women, 11.35 percent of them married at the age of 20 years old. While 10.64 percent
got married at the age of 18 and 9.07 percent got married at the age of 19.
21 years old- age at first marriage
Meanwhile, the age at first marriage of ever-married women aged 15-19 was 17, while those aged
20-24 years old got married at the age of 19. Those at the mid 20's and late 20's got married at
the age of 21. While, those 30 and above got married at the age of 22.

Death occurrence in General Santos City had a sluggish increase from 2004-2007. With 2,451 in
2004, it increased to 2,455 (0.16%) in 2005. In 2006, 5.73 percent has added to the death counts
and only 0.30 percent in 2007.
29
Apparently, Figure 2.D reveals that there was generally higher death incidence of males than
females from 2004 to 2007. The proportion of male death incidence slightly rose from 61.51% in
2004 to 62.91 after a year and 63.40 percent in 2006. However, it went down by 2.41 percentage
points in 2007 and eventually rose females' proportion by 2.41 percentage points in 2007 from
36.60 percent in 2006.

Migration
Migration is the third demographic processes, which also affects population change. The source
of migration data is the Census of Population which asked individuals of their residence five years
ago prior to the conduct of the census.
Table 2.15 presents migration data from the 2000 census of population results. The table shows
the proportion of residents/inhabitants who, five years before the census had resided elsewhere in
the country. Likewise, people who had changed their residence within the same municipality or
those who had only change their barangay residence are not included. These are called shortdistance movers, and their moves are only local movements.
Migration questions are asked to persons five years of age and older because younger persons
had not been born five years before the census. Likewise, not included in the group of those who
actually had in-migrated within the intercensal periods but since then they are died out or outmigrated again.
The consequence of the exclusions cited is that the number of migrants both in intra and interprovincial shown in table 2.11 is understated. However, the figures then permit the data user to
get an idea as to whether in-migration was substantial and to determine whether in-migration
increased or decreased. It also permits the user to decide which type of migration had been
prevailing, that within the province or that from the outside and determine those municipalities that
had been most attractive to in-migrants.

Persons aged 70-74 years old accounted for only 0.62 percent with 52.84 percent females and
47.16 percent males.
The above table indicates that females tend to have greater proportion than males as their age
advances, possibly because the life expectancy of females is higher than males. Only 0.35
percent belonged to age group 75-79 years old.

Expectedly, the proportion of persons aged 80 and over is lowered to 0.33 percent. Females
shared 59.35 percent while males only 40.65 percent with a sex ratio of 68.
The age-sex population pyramid can also be used as a tool in evaluating the age-sex composition
of the population. Figure 2.F shows the population pyramid of General Santos City based on 2000
census. The pyramids indicate, by sex and proportion of the population of each five-year age
group to the total population.
The 2000 population age-sex pyramid of General Santos City followed the normal pattern with
broad base at the bottom and narrower at the top. The age group four years and below had the
largest population (13.1%), followed by the age group 5 to 9 years old(12.5%). This implies that
population decreases as age increases.

3.2 Household Characteristics
There are several indicators that would describe how a certain area performs progressively. For
growth and development aspects, it is necessary to look into the smallest unit of the society, the
familys income and expenditures, and households facilities such as drinking facilities, access to
electricity, and other related information and conveniences which serve as benchmark in
describing the economic conditions of the households. Sources of information came from the
Family Income and Expenditure Survey and censuses of population and housing conducted by
NSO.
3.2.1 Family Income and Expenditure
Family Income includes income in cash or in kind such as produce from family-owned farms
consumed by the households. Expenditures are disbursements made by the family mainly for
family consumption. Family expenditures here exclude all expenses in relation to farm or
business operation, investment ventures, purchases of real property and other disbursements
which do not involve personal consumptions. The difference of income and expenditures is
defined as savings.

4.5 Consumer Price Index
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is an important indicator of the economy. It is used to compare
price movements in the different areas of the country. It also measures the value of a peso
relative to a base year period. It also determines inflation rate.
The citys annual Consumer Price Indices (CPI) from 2001 to 2007 posted to have the lowest
indices compared to the regional and national level. The annual average inflation indicates that
the general price level of commodities accelerates at a slower rate compared to regional and
national level.
Higher inflation started to occur in 2004 and 2005, which lowers the value of a peso from P0.92 to
P0.87 in 2004 to P0.82 in 2005. Price increases continue and eventually devalued the peso to
P0.78 in 2006 and P0.76 in 2007.
