Sarking
Step 2: Shape
The profile refers to a roof tiles shape and design. Boral
roof tile profiles range from smooth flat tiles to prominent
undulations or waves on the surface of the tile. Key
considerations when choosing a tile profile will be the pitch of
your roof as well as its style.
Step 3: Colour
Talk to any good roof installer and they will likely tellyouSarking
(reflective foil insulation) is essential for enhancing the energy
efficiency and performance of your roof. Sarking is a thermal
barrier, water-resistant, dust resistant and a fire retardant
membrane; its use is recommended under all roofing materials.
Installation
Choose a qualified roofing installer and ensure your
roof is installed properly and to Boral specifications. We
recommend an established independent installer from the
Boral preferred installer network.

than 5 must be installed under the tiles and cover the whole

Thermal Performance
The thermal performance of a roof refers to how it affects
the temperature within a house and relates to the energy
used within the house to maintain the temperature at a
comfortable level.

SARKING
THERMAL MASS
Materials with high thermal mass, or ability to absorb and store
heat energy, are important in most Australian climates where there
is a need to average out temperature extremes. The density of clay
and concrete effectively delays the flow of heat producing a warmer
house in winter and a cooler house in summer.
COLOUR
RAINWATER
In terms of collecting tank water, a roofs span will clearly affect the
volume of rain collected, so ensure a guttering and downpipe
system of adequate size. Tiled roofs of greater pitch will more
efficiently deliver rainwater to this system, particularly if the profile
isshaped.
VENTILATION
Cross-ventilation, with openings on both sides of a home, allows
breezes to circulate for a cooler home. This is of high importance in
the roof space, so radiant heat building up from the hot summer
sun can escape. Ideally, vents should be installed in the roof to
help regulate air flow all year round.
19
e
nergy use
Roof tiles used together with good design principles such as passive solar
design can make a significant difference to energy consumption used for
heating and cooling your home energy efficiency that is virtually built in.
Environmental Impact
INSULATION
The use of insulation to enable walls and ceilings to act as a barrier to heat
flow is essential to providing year-round comfort.
THERMAL MASS
The ability of a material to absorb heat energy. High density materials such
asbricks and roof tiles have high thermal mass which, when used correctly
can moderate internal temperatures by averaging day/night extremes.
