Message From The President
Aloha All,
I would like share a tidbit of history of Chinese in Hawaii. The official arrival
of Chinese in the Islands was in late 1788, when 2 ships, the Iphegenia and North West
America stopped on their fur-trading voyage. They were returning to China from
Northwest coast of America. A decade later, Chinese brought the first sugarmill to
Hawaii from China.
Let us welcome our 2 new members, Carrie Azama and Vincent Morn who
will be great assets to the chapter.
Birthdays are a celebration of life and times to share with friends and family. Our May birthdays are Emily
Chan, Craig Chung, and Gordon Wong. The June HCJ birthdays include Ana Che, Duc Nguyen, Gary Lam, and
Ken Sum. Best wishes to you all!
There were projects that happened since last NewsDragon. With the Ward Center Friends + Family +
Community Rewards Fundraiser, we sold 85 tickets. Thanks to Heidi Kuia from Ward Centers Management for
giving us the opportunity to fundraise and have a recruitment booth. At the booth, we sold tickets and made balloon
animals for the keiki. Special mahalos to Hawaii Jaycees President Patrick Tomiyasu for his great sales talent,
assisting in recruiting 2 prospective members.
At the Afternoon at the Movies, we saw Iron Man and dined at Big City Diner. At the Cards Night, we
were instructed by Hawaii Jaycees C.O.B. Eddie “Card Shark” Kam and Thayer Goya on Poker and Texas Hold
Em. Thanks go to Lindley Low, for hosting the event at his house. Stay tuned for training on other casino games.
It’s that time again for the 50th State Fair so help is need with setup, prep nights, and fair days for 5
weekends. We’re seeking volunteers with experience, but there is on the job training available for newbies. On May
17, 2008, we assisted with unloading equipment from Kelfred and Gifford Chang’s warehouse, as well as cleaning
and washing out refrigerators, kitchen utensils and containers. The last weekend is available for a group who is
interested in fundraising.
Finally, big Mahalos to Terence Young for allowing us to have our board meetings and call nights at his office.
I would like to personally thank each and every one of you who have attended our past projects and will attend our
upcoming projects. We are seeking ideas for future projects and possible guest speakers at GMM.
Sincerely,
Lily Fung
I would like to thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers. Just to let
everyone know that I am doing fine and we are both still thinking positive.
Well it's that time again for our 50th State Fair so we will need
everyone's help with our food booth for 5 weekends long at Aloha Stadium
starting on May 22nd & ending on June 22nd.
We would like to hear from you! What projects are you interested in
seeing or coming out to? The Honolulu Chinese Jaycees offers great resources
that will help change your life. The Board of Directors is really working hard this year to make this happen and
would like to see everyone get involved. You are the reason our organization grows and becomes successful.
Forever in Jaycees,
Kathy Kam

Ana Che was not idle either. She, along with State
Pres Patrick Tomiyasu, worked on connecting with
prospective members.

Shopping Spree event. HCJ’s goals were to make some
final ticket sales and meet some prospective members. Appreciation goes to Melyssa Ching as well, who not

salesman skill repeatedly. His low-pressure, high-
friendly manner separated passers-by from their money
in ways that would make Donald Trump envious.
As popular as Vegas is with locals, it was only a matter of time before we did a Poker
Night. That time arrived on Saturday, May 17th. The evening kicked off appropriately with
Lindley Low recounting his recent family trip to Las Vegas. His tales of breaking the slot
machines for a nice profit encouraged many to take the next plane to Nevada. He even had
documented video proof showing the take in progress, which made him even more of a hero
to his envious listeners. Expect a book soon outlining Lindley’s Breaking The Slots System.
After filling up with pizza and Wes Kam’s famous soup, the group sat down to listen
to Eddie Kam give a primer on some of the different kinds of poker. Eddie even made a
handout for budding players to refer to and use to improve their game.
5 & 7 Card Stud, 5 Card Draw, Texas Hold ‘Em and even the dreaded ‘Omaha’ were
explained. Eddie emphasized the popular poker styles offered at Vegas tables. It was a wise
call, since a casino trip is now a Hawaii residency requirement.
PLAY TIME
After Eddie’s very informative talk, a table was set up and play was begun. Thayer Goya took
on dealing duties, showing skills built from many a night spent anteing up. Ellen Pang must’ve been listening closely
to Eddie. She easily took the 1st hand, spanking Thayer’s cards like they’d been caught with their hands in the cookie
jar.
Melyssa Ching quickly built up a pile of chips also, making it a sweep early on for the Ladies’ side.
MYSTERIOUS HAPPENINGS
Strangely, since we weren’t really gambling, Marcus was seen giving his car title to Thayer after losing a big hand.
Witnesses also reported that Wes Kam left wearing nothing but a
wooden barrel held up by a pair of suspenders. If anybody
knows what happened, please drop us a line.
Thanks to our attendees: Ana Che, Daniel Otsuka, Eddie Kam, Ellen Pang, Marcus Pang, Gerald Chung, Isaac
Sato, Jonathan Cook, Jon Nishihara, Kathy Kam, Wes Kam, Lily Fung. Lindley Low, Matt Catian, Melyssa Ching &
Thayer Goya
The Hawaii Jaycees is pleased to announce our participation in the Hawaiian Airlines Preferred Affliliate
Program. The program gives our members, their friends and families access to special discounted airfares (Both
Inter-Island and to the U.S. Mainland) with Hawaiian Airlines.
Typically, the discounted fare will be 5% lower than the standard price available on the Internet. (This may
not include fares that are already specially priced, like the current $49 Inter-Island fares.)
As mentioned above, there currently are no other discounted Inter-Island fares, other than the standard
discounted $49 fares. However, you can find discounted Mainland flights through this program with your Hawaii
Jaycee code. If you have any questions about this program, please email Jamie at nkasaoj@aol.com or call her at 371-
0999.

In this age of almost $4/Gallon gas, every little bit helps. Aloha Petroleum is offering to Hawaii Jaycees a Gas
Card Program that will give you a discount of 3 Cents a Gallon every time you fill up! This is not a limited time
offer, this is a new permanent program for Jaycees, their families & their friends.
Best of all is you’ll also be helping local schools through this program. 1 cent from every gallon you buy will be
donated automatically to the Hawaii Jaycees Adopt-A-School Fund. Every cent in that fund goes to supplies, repairs
and improvements to Hawaii schools!
You not only help yourself, you directly help the schools, our teachers and our keiki. All from just filling up your
tank. You have to do it anyway. So why not save a little money and give some kokua to our schools, too?
Ask your board members for an application or go online to AlohaGas.com to fill out an online application.
Remember – you can enroll your friends and family, too. When they fill up, they get the savings and they help us, just
like you. Enroll now!
Don’t forget the HCJ movie passes benefit – Read about it on Page 3
