Recognition of Israel

After the conflict in 1948 most nations globally accepted

Israel as its own independent state
The surrounding Arab states however did not recognize
Israel as an independent state

Israels Advantage

Israel was unlike most countries that emerged in the

wake of WWII
They entered their independence with 50 years of
strong heritage and institutions already in place by them in their
region
Since most Palestinians were not in Palestine any more,
Israel unlike many emerging states had no group in their
country to truly oppose them
Unlike many states Israel received investments from
Jews globally, as well as defense aid from France, later
defense and nondefense aid from the US as well as reparations
from Germany for the Holocaust

Repatriation and
Restitution

This was hard especially since the Israelis took over the
property abandoned by the Palestinians and then distributed it
to Jewish Israelis
Some Palestinians attempted to reclaim their property in
two ways
Some crossed armistice lines to harvest
crops or carry away movable property
The others crossed the lines to commit
sabotage or acts of violence
The Israeli government did not differentiate between the
two and attacked both indiscriminately
The Israelis believed these actions would cause the
Arabs to police their borders better

New Immigrants

Within the first four years of existence the population

doubled with 700,000 new immigrants
Another 700,000 immigrants came over to Israel within
the next 15 years
Many jews were persecuted in their home country so
they came to Israel
In Iraq where Jews were heavily restricted and
oppressed, 120,000 came to Israel to escape this

Closing of the Red

Sea

In the spring of 1967, Nasser had the entrance to the

Red Sea closed to Israel making its port city Eilat useless
Because the Israelis and Americans believed this to be
an international waterway Israel took this as an act of war and

attacked surrounding Arab nations on June 5, 1967

This war lasted 6 days, and the Israelis completely
defeated the Arabs
The Israelis gained: all of Jerusalem, the Sinai
Peninsula, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and the Golan
Heights
The Israelis then agreed to give the land back if they got
recognition
The Three Nos

After the Arab nations met in Khartoum, Sudan to

decide on a position on Israel together, they came up with 3
nos
No negotiations with Israel
No peace with Israel
No recognition of Israel

After 1967

After the 1967 war, Israel declared Jerusalem to be its

new indivisible capital and also extended its boundaries into the
West Bank
The Israelis also made settlements in the West Bank
where 300,000 people now live
At first they were considered illegal but in 2004 Bush
said the world needs to just move on closing this argument

Palestinians
Working

Despite the separation and hatred towards each other,

the two groups are dependent on each other
Palestinians often work in Israel in the day but live in
Palestinian territories at night to get better pay
Israelis use power grids and water from the West Bank
Palestinians in the West Bank rely on Israel to buy
certain things from them just as much as the Israelis rely on the
palestinians to produce these things for them
