Introduction:
3

 Broadband service in BSNL is given by two ways, one is

wireless Virtual Private Networks(VPNs) and the other is
wired Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL).

VPN:
4

 Virtual Private Network is a type of private network that

uses public telecommunication, such as the Internet,
instead of leased lines to communicate.
 It has two connections, one is made to the Internet and the
second is made to the VPN.
 Datagrams contains data, destination and source
information.

5

 It has main functions as follows:

1. Authentication
2. Access control
3. Confidentiality
4. Data Integrity

6

 There are mainly two types of VPNs:

 Customer Premises Equipment (CPE)VPNs:
1. PPTP -- Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol
2. L2TP -- Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol
3. IPsec -- Internet Protocol Security

7

 Provider Provisioned (PP) VPNs:

1. Layer 2 MPLS VPNs.
2. Layer 3 MPLS VPNs.

8

 Architecture of VPN:

9

 In VPNs, "tunneling" is the encapsulation of packets

inside packets of a different protocol to create and
maintain the virtual circuit.

10

 Advantages of VPN:
1. Eliminating the need for expensive long-distance leased
lines.
2. Reducing the long-distance telephone charges for
remote access.
3. Transferring the support burden to the service providers.
4. Less Operational costs.

11

 MPLS VPN:
 Security is the responsibility of service provider’s
(BSNL) MPLS Network.
 Simple Network Implementation
 Easy to configure & Manage.
 QoS, and better Traffic management.
 Easy Network Expansion at Customer Premises.

ADSL: asymmetric digital subscriber line
13

 This technology allows copper telephone line to be used

to provide a broadband connection.

 ADSL uses a different set of frequencies, it does not

interfere with telephone conversation.

 Telephone and Internet access can be used together using

this technology.

ADSL: asymmetric digital subscriber line
14

 ADSL is an asymmetric technology i.e. transmit

asymmetric data stream
 Up to 20Mb/s downstream to the subscriber(typically 2Mb/s)
 Up to 1 Mb/s upstream back (typically 100 Kb/s)

 ADSL provides high speed downloads i.e.

• 35 times faster than that of normal dial-up
connection
• about 16 times faster than that of ISDN connection
• about 16 times faster than that of DIAS connection.

Framing of ADSL data
15

 The data of the ADSL is organized into FRAMES and

SUPERFRAMES.

 One SF is built of 68 ADSL Frames and one Sync

Frame.

Framing of ADSL data
16

The Sync Frame is used to provide SF sync,

identification of START of The SF.

Framing of ADSL data
17

•Fast Byte– used for special SF – related processing Functions

•Fast Data– TX time sensitive info, it can vary in length

•FEC -- Used to ensure accuracy of FAST DATA

•Interleaved Data.. User data Tx by ADSL or Internet data, it can

vary in length

ADSL Setup
18
Copper telephone line

•A splitter - or microfilter - allows a single telephone

connection to be used for both broadband service and voice
calls at the same time.

ADSL COMMUNICATION
19

 Currently, most ADSL communication is full-duplex .

 Full-duplex ADSL communication is usually achieved

on a wire pair by either frequency division duplex
(FDD), echo-cancelling duplex (ECD), or time-division
duplexing (TDD).

 FDD uses two separate frequency bands, referred to as

the upstream and downstream bands.

ADSL COMMUNICATION
20

•Red area is the frequency range used by normal voice

telephony (PSTN)

•Green (upstream) and blue (downstream) areas are used for

ADSL

ADSL COMMUNICATION
21

• The upstream band is used for communication from the

end user to the telephone central office.

• The downstream band is used for communicating from the

central office to the end user.
