CHEM&100 MIDTERM STUDY GUIDE

Your Midterm will be closed-book and closed-notes. You will be able to use personal
periodic table or the one located on the cover of your book. Questions on your midterm
will equal a total of 100 points. You will have 2.5-hours to complete the midterm. Spelling
will count so please know how to spell compound names.
Review your Chapter Assignment questions and know the material found in them. This list
is just a guide for study.
Please realize you are responsible for the knowing the material covered in the book and in
the lectures even if it is not listed below.
Chapter 1

Know the process for the Scientific Method

Be able to describe/define the states of matter
Be able to classify matter
Know the difference between a homogeneous (a solution) and heterogeneous mixture
Know the vocabulary given in this chapter

Chapter 4 (sections 4.1 4.2)

Be able to classify chemical and physical properties of matter

Be able to classify chemical and physical changes of matter
Know the law of conservation of mass and energy
Know the vocabulary given in this chapter

Chapter 3

Be able to accurately use a Periodic Table

Know to which periodic group an element belongs
Be able to identify an element by its symbol or write the symbol for a given element
Know the vocabulary given in this chapter
Be able to accurately write out chemical compounds or translate a given chemical
compound
Be able to classify elements, compounds, and mixtures and know the difference between
them
Be able to identify diatomic molecules

Chapter 5

Know the vocabulary given in this chapter

Be able to name and describe each subatomic particle

Be able to correctly annotate an isotope using information from chapter 5 and previous

Chapter 10

Know the vocabulary given in this chapter

Know how to determine how many valence electrons an element has
Know the energy levels and sublevels of electrons and the order in which they are found
Be able to identify an element and/or classify groups from orbital diagrams and/or
electron configurations and/or atomic structure diagrams
Be able to write out the electron configuration for a give element

Chapter 6

Know the correct nomenclature for a given chemical formula or know how to write the
chemical formula for a given chemical compound.
Know the formulas for cations/anions of the elements and how to combine the two

Chapter 11

Know the periodic table trends in atomic properties

Know how ionic bonds are formed, what are the criteria to form these, and how to predict
the formulas for ionic compounds
Know how covalent bonds are formed, what are the criteria to form these, and how to
predict the formulas for covalent compounds
Understand electronegativity
Understand polarity
Be able to identify a polyatomic ion
Know the vocabulary given in this chapter

Chapter 13 (section 13.5 only)

Know the different types of intermolecular forces.

Know what hydrogen bonding is and be able to identify hydrogen bonds or compounds
that undergo hydrogen bonding
