THE MIRACLE OF ST THEODORE THE RECRUIT

OF

ST PAUL

Teknon
Fifty years after St Theodores Martyrdom, Emperor Julian the Apostate (361-363),
who passionately hated the Christians, had instigated merciless persecutions
against them and, knowing Clean Monday the first day of Great Lent was
coming, he commanded the officials of Constantinople to sprinkle all the food
in the marketplaces during the first week of Great Lent with the blood of
animals that had been the offered to the pagan idols.
The food would not only be contaminated with blood, which Christians avoid
during Lent, but the food would also be contaminated with the blood of
animals that had been offered to the false gods.
However, St Theodore appeared in a dream to Archbishop Eudoxios, ordering him
to inform all the Christians not to purchase anything from the marketplaces,
but rather to eat cooked wheat with honey (Kollyva).
This Miracle of the Vision of St Theodore preserved the Faithful Christians of
Constantinople from eating what would have been contaminated food.
In memory of this Miracle, the Orthodox Church annually Commemorates St
Theodore the Recruit on the first Saturday of Great Lent.
This example of Gods Divine Providence encourages us to examine ourselves
closely, for God watches over us, protecting and preserving His Faithful People
from partaking of anything that is not good for us.
God and His Heavenly Hosts guard His Faithful Flock even when we do not know
what is being plotted against us and have not prayed for His Holy Protection.
Too often we doubt or do not realise our Lords Loving concern for us and many
of us have wrong perceptions of Almighty God but our limited understanding
of His infinite Majesty and Great Mercy have nothing at all to do with His
Divine Truth or our Lord God of the True Teaching of Christ nor the GodInspired Holy Scriptures and certainly nothing like the Compassionate and
Loving God Who is always concerned with the Eternal Welfare of His People!
Misguided attitudes frequently infect the Church, and our lives especially when
we are tempted by the evil one to doubt that God really cares about us.
When such thoughts arise we are merely being tempted by the greatest liar and
deceiver of all who wants us to believe that our personal issues are
insignificant and of no consequence at all.
It is natural for us to sometimes have doubts even King David occasionally
questioned Gods Actions in his Psalms. But worse than doubts is when we live
as though there is no God Who watches over us and takes constant care of
us.
We sin as though we are non-believers or atheists. We feel no shame, no
remorse and we never question our evil impulses we just do whatever we
want to do.
How do we pray? Do we pray as True Believers in a Loving and Provident
Almighty God with Humility and Thanksgiving? Do we plan and live each
day knowing that God has a specific, Eternal Purpose for each and every one
of us?
These are attitudes that need to be examined closely. What we do with ourselves
is a very good indicator of what we actually believe.
The biggest difference between our Christian God and the modern, New Age,
popular secular ideas of God, is Love Agape the infinite and unconditional
Divine Love of God that really does care what happens in the lives of each
and every person on the this planet - because God is Love.
We can Repent, Watch and Pray: Lord, I believe. Help Thou my unbelief!
