TopicalTheologicalExpositorySermon(20%):Studentswillprepareanddeliver(without
notes)a30minutetopicaltheologicalexpositorymessageaddressingapastoraltheological
issuefromthelistontheSignUppage.Thepastoraltheologicaltopicchosenwill
determinethepreachingorderforthesemester.Studentsmaysuggestanalternativepastoral
theologicalissuefortheprofessorsapproval.

TopicalBiographicalExpositorySermon(20%):Studentswillprepareanddeliver(without
notes)a30minutetopicalbiographicalexpositorymessageonabiographicalcharacterof
theirchoice(withtheapprovaloftheprofessor).Seealistofpotentialbiographicalcharacter
topicsfollowingtheSignUppage.

(withoutnotes)a30minutetopicalcurrentissueexpositorymessageonacurrentissueof
theirchoice(withtheapprovaloftheprofessor.)Seealistofpotentialcurrentissuetopics
followingtheSignUppage.

Duringthecourseofthecurrentschoolyear,fourgraduatingmenwillbeselectedfromallofthe
PM252(PM201)andPM202preachingsectionstopreachinChapelduringtheSeniorPreaching
Week.TherecipientoftheH.A.IronsideAwardinExpositoryPreachingwillcomefromthis
groupoffour.Theselectionofthechapelpreacherswillbebasedonsermonsthatrepresent
exemplaryexpositorypreaching,andwillinvolvesuchfactorsasfidelitytothebiblicalmeaning
ofthetext,clarityinflowandpresentation,interestingdelivery,andrelevantapplicationtothe
needsoftheaudience.

Bynoonofthedaybeforethestudentspeaks,hewillturnintotheprofessorbothatyped
homileticaloutlineofhissermoncarriedtothreelevelsofsubordination(i.e.I.A.1.2.B.II.A.B.
1.2.)ANDaseparate,full,typed,doublespacedmanuscript.Ofcourse,thehomileticaloutline
andthesermonmanuscriptshouldbeconsistent.Adeductionoftwomarks(AtoB;B+toB;
etc.)willoccurforlateness.Ifastudentisnotoncampusthedaybeforehepreaches,ratherthan
makingaseparatetriptocampus,hemayemailtheprofessororcalltheprofessorsvoicemailby
noonthedaybeforehepreachestoconfirmthatthefinaloutlineandmanuscripthavebeen
completed.Studentswillbeexpectedtotalk/thinktheirwaythroughtheirmanuscriptsatleast
FIVETIMESbeforepresentingtheirsermonsinclass.ThegoalisNOTWORDFORWORD
MEMORIZATION,butratherMASTERYOFTHEFLOWofthematerial.
Themanuscriptshouldreflecttothefullestextentwhatthepreacherexpectstosayintheoral
presentation(i.e.,ALLTRANSITIONS,RESTATEMENTS,SCRIPTUREREADINGS,
ILLUSTRATIONS,ETC.SHOULDBEWRITTENOUTFULLY).Themanuscriptshouldbe
writtenasasermontobeheard,notasanarticletoberead.

ExploringtheTheologicalFoundationsforPreachinginthe21stCentury:AConsideration
andApplicationofChristianSystematicTheologyResearchPaper(15%)
EachstudentwillsubmitaresearchpaperfollowingtheseminaryprescribedTurabianformat
entitled,ExploringtheTheologicalFoundationsforPreachinginthe21stCentury:A
ConsiderationandApplicationofChristianSystematicTheology.Thepaper,basedoncareful
reading,research,andreflection,willbenolessthan5pagesandnomorethan10pages,
includingbibliography.Thepaperwilldeveloptwomainsections.First,thestudent,having
reflectedonthemajorcategoriesofChristianSystematicTheology(TheologyProper,
Trinitarianism,Christology,Pneumatology,Bibliology,etc.,etc.),willsummarizehowthetruthof
Christiandoctrinecontributestotheimperativeofpreachinginthe21stCentury.Second,the
studentwillidentifyanissueinpreachingthatshouldbeinfluencedbyonesbiblical/theological
foundations.Forexample,thestudentmayarguefor/againsttheclaimthat,ThePreachingofthe
WordofGodistheWordofGod(SecondHelveticConfession),orfor/againstvideo
cast/satellitepreaching,orfor/againstconversationalpreaching,ormakeacasefortheroleof
theHolySpiritinthesermonspreparationandpresentation,ormakeacasethatpreachingis
sacramental.
InadditiontolinkingeachofthemajorChristiandoctrinestoanimperativeforpreaching,the
researchpaperwillargueforathesissupportedbytheologicalandlogicalargumentation.
ResearchpaperswillbeevaluatedusingtheRS102ResearchPaperCritiqueformfoundbelow.
