CA:

Here we r using more than one carrier (5) so increase in transmission bw

Can extend bw upto 100 MHz by aggregating 5 LTE carriers/channels.
Efficient use of spectrum. Min 40 MHz and Max 100 MHz
Carriers may be contiguous / Non-contiguous (intra or inter band)
elements of the spectrum
Can use both TDD and FDD
Target to achieve 1 Gbps in DL and 500 Mbps in UL
Each aggregated carrier is called Component carrier
Supports rel 8/9 bws (1.4,3,5,10,15,20) - > 5*20 -> 100 MAX
Spacing b/w carriers is multiples of 300 KHz for compatibility with 100 MHz

CA Types:
-

Intra band : component carriers within same band

o Contiguous
Carriers are adjacent to each other
Aggregated channel considered by the terminal as Single
enlarged carrier
So one transceiver is enough for ue
o Non Contiguous :
Carriers belong to same frequency band but gaps in b/w them
Need more than one transceiver. Cost, power, space ,
complex
Inter band Non Contiguous :
Uses different operating frequency bands
Symmetric CA: equal no of component carriers for DL and UL
o In TDD DL and UL are always symmetric
o In FDD either sym or asym
Asymmetric CA: no of component carriers for DL and UL are different
o UL carrier components are equal or less than DL
o Individual carrier components can have different bws

Component Carrier Types:

-

PCC (Primary CC): Main carrier in any group .

o Changed only at Hand over
SCC (Secondary CC): one or more. Can be added or removed

Cell Configuration:
-

Each component carrier corresponds to a serving cell

Coverage of the cell differ due to component carrier frequency & power
planning
PCC - > Primary serving cell ->PCell . Remaining are called Secondary cells
-> SCell
No of serving cells depends on the aggregation capability of UE

PCell: Primary Serving cell

Served by primary component carrier (DL PCC and UL PCC)

RRC Connection is handled by PCell
It is on DL PCC that UE receives info NAS info such as security parameters
In idle mode it listens to system information on the DL PCC, On UL PCC
PUCCH is sent
o Random access procedures is performed over PCell
o PDCCH/PDSCH/PUCCH/PUCCH can be transmitted
o Measurements and mobility parameters are based on PCell
o It Cant be deactivated

SCell: Secondary Serving cell

-

SCell is configured after connection establishment TO PROVIDE

ADDITIONAL RADIO RESOURCES
o RACH procedure is not allowed
o PDCCH/PDSCH/PUSCH Can be transmitted (Not PUCCH)
o MAC Layer based activation/deactivation can be supported to save
battery of UE
o Can be cross scheduled

Resource Scheduling:
Same Carrier Scheduling:
-

Resources are scheduled on the same carrier as the grant is received

Separate PDCCH for each component carrier
Reusing LTE Rel 8/9 PDCCH structure and DCI format

Cross Carrier Scheduling:

-

To schedule resources on SCC without PDCCH

There ll be CIF (Carrier Indicator field) to know on which carrier it is located
Common PDCCH and multiple CCs
Reusing LTE Rel 8/9 PDCCH structure
CIF (3 bit ) is added to DCI in Rel 8.
o PCELL is not cross scheduled , it is scheduled using own PDCCH
o PCELL is responsible for cross scheduling of SCELL
