Introduction
Usually for testing 6-phase synchronizer relays six voltage channels are necessary in order to simulate two
independent 3-phase systems. Therefore often external voltage amplifiers like the CMS 156 are connected
to the CMC Test Set. However, instead of an external voltage amplifier also a second CMC Test Set with its
synchronization feature can be used.
This Application Note should provide assistance with testing a 6-phase synchronizer relay without any
additional voltage amplifiers by making use of two CMC Test Sets.
Required Hardware:
> 2 x CMC 256-6 / 256plus / 356 / 353
Required Test Universe modules:
> Synchronizer
> QuickCMC
Wiring Diagram
The devices have to be wired as shown in the wiring diagram below:

Software Settings
1. Start the Synchronizer module
2. Choose CMC#1 in the Hardware Configuration and select the configuration as shown in
the figures below.

3. Define the relay test in the Synchronizer module. The figure below shows an example.
4. Open a QuickCMC module parallel to the Synchronizer module and select CMC#2 in the Hardware
Configuration. The output configuration of CMC#2 has to be defined as shown in the figure below.

5. Now define the output voltage in QuickCMC. Enter the voltage which has been defined in the
Synchronizer module for System 1 (figure 6). The phase shift between the voltages has to be 0, -120
and 120.
6. As a next step select Synchronize to Input... from the Parameters menu entry in QuickCMC and
activate the button Synchronize.
7. Start thereupon QuickCMC by pushing the ON button or F5-key and execute the defined test in the
Synchronizer module subsequently. Now CMC#2 will be synchronized to CMC#1 and a test with six
voltages takes place.
8. As soon as the test in the Synchronizer module is finished, switch off the outputs in the QuickCMC
module and save the results.
