Troop 700 10-Essentials List


Remember the Scout Motto: BE PREPARED
These essential items MUST be in the possession of each Scout & adult leader as directed, at every Troop 700 meeting and
Troop 700 outdoor activity. Items should be kept in a pack or in bags appropriate for each meeting and outdoor activity.

Map (Topographical map of the upcoming Troop 700 outdoor activity. Keep the
map folded correctly in a zip-lock plastic bag with a pencil.)
Compass (A map compass on a string to wear around neck, and the declination set.)
Flashlight (Recommendations: 2-Cell AA Mini Maglight with extra bulb, and/or
a LED type head lamp, plus extra batteries. Back-up: glow sticks & a candle lantern.)
First Aid Kit (Please include: blister protection (Moleskin, Nuskin, etc.),
waterproof adhesive tape, assorted band-aids, gauze pads (3x 3 & 4x 4),
2 wide roll of gauze bandage, butterfly bandages (suture tape), triangular bandages,
3 wide elastic bandage, wound cleanser (hydrogen peroxide, antiseptic swabs, etc.),
antiseptic cream, anti-itch cream, latex gloves, scissors, tweezers, needle, change for
an emergency call, pencil & paper, wilderness first aid manual; AND the following
medications (check expiration dates regularly): insect bite reliever, pain reliever,
tooth ache medication, cough drops, nasal decongestants, anti-diarrhea medication,
laxatives, heartburn medication; including other personal medications, inhalers, etc.)
Fire Starter (Igniter: storm proof matches, flint & steel, etc. Use clear nail polish to
waterproof strike anywhere type matches. Fire Starter: any material that will
sustain a flame, such as: a candle, fuel tablets/sticks, wax & sawdust cubes, cotton
balls saturated in Vaseline, dryer lint, magnesium bar, etc. Put in safe container/bag.)
Pocket Knife (A multi-tool type knife & small sharpening stone is recommended.)

Extra Clothing (Good rain gear, knit/wool cap, gloves, etc. Use layering system:
1. Wicking Layer, 2. Insulating Layer, 3. Protecting Layer. NO COTTON!!!)
8. Extra Food (Emergency food that is durable & concentrated.)
9. Water (Water bottles/bladder, water filter/purifier and water purification tablets.)
10. Sun Protection (Wide-brim hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, SPF15 Chapstick, etc.)

Troop 700 Consent & Information Form (Including Medical Forms on File)
Watch & Identification (Water resistant watch, wallet with Medical I.D. required.)
Whistle (Required to be worn on a string around neck at ALL outdoor activities.)
Signal Mirror (Mirror from map compass may be used also.)
Insect Repellent (Products containing DEET are best, Sawyer is recommended.)
50 Feet of Rope (1/8 (3 MIL.) high-quality rope or nylon parachute cord.)
15 Feet of Rope (3/8 (or larger) braded rope for practicing knots & lashings.)
20 Feet of Duct Tape (The Silver Miracle wrapped around a pencil.)
15 Feet of Wire (About the thickness of a paperclip.)
Large Trash Bags (Heavy duty 3 MIL. 42 gallon recommended.)
Seam Grip (1-ounce tube made by McNett, visit: www.mcnett.com for info.)
Sew Kit (Hand-sewing needles, leather needle, 15 Feet of waxed synthetic thread
and/or waxed dental floss, 25 feet of black nylon upholstery thread, assorted thread
for sewing patches on your uniform (wrap around a bobbin), safety pins & a thimble.)
25. Toiletry Kit (Toilet Paper: unscented thin type in a zip-lock bag, Plastic Trowel,
Soap: unscented All-Purpose liquid type that is biodegradable, Shammy/Towel,
Comb, Tooth Brush/Paste, Deodorant: use discretion as it attracts bugs & bears!)
