Teaching Partners

Interestingly, while higher education is a collegial

environment, much of our teaching is done in isolation. The
CTLE Teaching Partners Program offers an opportunity for you
to partner with a colleague to observe and record each other's
classes and receive constructive feedback. It also, provides for
consultation with your CTLE Associate Director. Additionally,
it encourages you to reflect on your teaching practice and what
you might do to enhance it.
To take part in the Teaching Partners Program you will need to find a colleague who is interested
in partnering with you to observe and constructively critique each others classes. Partners do
not necessarily need to teach the same disciplines, but it may make it easier to coordinate
observations and be more knowledgeable of content if you work with someone within your
department or college. Once you have created your partnership, you will need to submit the
following application no later than midnight September 28.
Program Timeline
Form a partnership with a colleague and submit a program application by September 28.
Complete a pre-observation conference by October 9.
Complete class observation by October 23.
Complete post-observation constructive critique conference by October 30.
Put into practice and assess potential enhancements to the course by November 20.
Provide feedback about the process to your college CTLE Associate Director by
December 11. Associate Directors will also be available for consultation throughout the
process.
Submit a reflection report by December 21.
Receive a $250.00 stipend upon submission of the reflection report.

Basic Teaching Approach of Partner 1:

Demonstrative based learning/teaching of physics concepts with involved learning of students.
Home work is given every week to work on individually.

Basic Teaching Approach of Partner 2:

Inquiry based learning with collaborative in-class problem solving of the theoretical concepts.

Why we should be selected to participate in the Teaching Partners. Make your case for
acceptance to the program.
Dr. Farooq uses lots of in-class demonstrations to explain complex and non-intuitive
ideas of physics. My observation till date, is that the students liked a lot, because they feel that
they are learning and understanding the material. On the other hand my teaching style is
interactive and group activities by problems solving. This technique helps them to relate and
understand the background theory in addition to problem solving skills. By observing each other
(same course) we think that we can be able to incorporate the teaching styles of each other in our
lectures next semester for the best interest of students. This will make the class fun along with an

enhancing learning of the students. We are planning to apply in combination of these techniques
in coming semesters.
The post- observation discussions between Dr. Farooq and myself has led to constructive
feedback and discussion to enhance teaching techniques. These brain storming dialogues have
led to relating PS-103 course to in-flight pilot issues to write new homework problem-sets
related to flying. These problem sets will be more closely linked to aviation, and we are in
process of compiling these problems by class discussion from students, professors in aviation
and aviation related fields. In this short period of time we have seen that the subject has become
more relevant to the students.
All these reviews are well documented, by video recording of the lectures of each other.
This assists in making peer-reviews more beneficial to refer to the topic.
Considering all the mentioned reasons we feel by observing each other we will improve
the quality of teaching and it will not only benefit us but also ERAU students.
We will be thankful if you will accept out case for teaching partners.
