THIS IS NOT WHAT I EXPECTED

John 12:12-16

How often do our expectations and our experiences clash?

How often do we sign up for one thing and receive something entirely different.
When you expect one thing and you got another, what do you do?
1) Hold on to your values.
A. Ultimately my values, my purpose is to glorify God.
B. Even in difficult times hold on to your values.

The path

Paul made an amazing statement in 2 Corinthians 4 verse 7. He said now we have this treasure in clay jars.
What exactly is he talking about?
First, what is the treasure that he mentions? It is the Gospel. Look in the preceding verses of 2 Cor. 4. Thats
what hes been talking about. For some people, life is just one tedious day after another. They just exist. Life is not
supposed to be that way. God wants to put this treasure inside of us. Its not a product of mental ingenuity. Its
not something remote and mystical. Its certainly not about just being good and ethical. And isnt not some kind of
religious piosity. Its not withdrawing from the world. Its not emotionalism or intellectualism. Very simply, the
treasure is the Good News! It is the truth that God loves us so much that He sent His son, Jesus, into the world to
die for the sinful human race. God had declared that sin would keep us eternally separated from Him and that the
wages of sin is death. But He loved us so much that He sent His Son to pay the price for us so that we could have a
path to forgiveness and reconciliation. That is the treasure.
Second, what is the clay jar that he said contained the treasure? One translation says earthen vessel and
another says frail human containers. He is talking about us. He has put the treasure (the Gospel) in us. What?!
Every time I think about that truth it nearly brings me to my knees. Putting the Good News in me is like putting
diamonds in a dingy jar or a beautiful picture in a broken frame. Who are we to be entrusted with this Gospel? If
we fail it will never spread to another generation. Who are we?!
But then I realize that it has always been that way. Abraham was a man that God entrusted with His message
and yet he had his own human struggles. Moses, Elijah, David were all great men of the Old Testament but they
were men with feet of clay. But God used them. The same with the writers of the New Testament. They were great
men with much ability but their greatest asset was their availability to the Lord. Were they perfect? Far from it.
They were humans just like all of us. But God put inside of them (clay jars) this wonderful treasure (the Gospel).
So it is with us. God has put the treasure inside of you. Live it out today. Even if you failed to do so yesterday.
Let someone know about the treasure that is within you through the way you live and the things you say and who
you are. And always remember you were bought with a price. The blood of the Lord Jesus Christ!
In Christ with love,
Trip
