Founded as the Scindia Shipyard, it

was built by industrialist Walchand
Hirachand as a part of The Scindia
Steam Navigation Company Ltd.
Walchand selected Vishakhaptnam as
a strategic and idle location and took
possession of land in November,
1940. The World War II was going on
and in April 1941, the Japanese
bombed the town. However, Walchand
was unfettered and decided to go
ahead with his plan of building a
shipbuilding industry in India. In the
days when it was unthinkable of
foundation ceremony to be done by
anyone other than British officials, the
truly patriotic Walchand decided to
break the tradition and the foundation
stone for the shipyard was laid by

Dr. Rajendra Prasad on 21 June 1941,

who was
acting Congress President at that
time. The first ship to be constructed
fully in India after independence was
built at the Scindia Shipyard and
named Jal Usha. It was launched in
1948 by Jawaharlal Nehru by the
first Prime Minister of India, at a
ceremony where, of course, the
families of Seth Walchand Hirachnd,
late Narottam Morarjee and Tulsidas
Kilachand, the partners of Scindia
Shipyard, were present along with
other dignitaries and industrialists. It
was a proud moment for the nation,
which had just began its journey.
Walchand died in 1953, the Scindia
Shipyard continued to flourish under
next of kins of founders. However, later
on the government of India decided to
nationalize the Scindia Shipyard, as it

was a sensitive and strategic sector

related to defense sector of the
country. The shipyard was finally
nationalized in 1961 and renamed
Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL).
In 2009, HSL was transferred from the
Ministry of Shipping to the Ministry of
Defence. The yard played a critical role
in the development of nuclearpowered, Arihant class submarine.

Facilities
The shipyard is relatively compact
at 46.2 hectares (0.462 km2). It is
equipped with the plasma cutting
machines, steel processing and
welding facilities, material handling
equipment, cranes, logistics.

Ship Repair
All ships need maintenance and repairs.
Many repair and maintanance
operations can be performed at sea or
by the crew in port. Complicated or
large-scale repairs might require the
ship to be removed from commercial
operation. Classification Society
supervision is required for most largescale repairs, particularly those carried
out in a ship repair yard. For
oceangoing ships, particularly tankers,
the ship has to be prepared for repair at
a Deballasting Station. The tank must
be thoroughly cleaned and its slops
(grey water and hydrocarbon residues)

must be pumped ashore according to

environmental regulations.

ELECTRICAL
DEPARTMENT
VARIOUS SHIPS WHICH COME
INTO THE YARD HAVE MANY
ELECTRICAL RELATED
PROBLEMS AND THEY REQUIRE
TO BE MODIFIED OR REPAIRED .
IN THIS SECTION OF SHIP
REPAIR DIVISION THESE
PROBLEMS ARE DEALT WITH .
THEREBY SEEKING A SOLUTION
OR MODIFYING IT IS THE MAIN
OBJECTIVE OF THIS SECTION .
LARGE NUMBER OF SPARE
PARTS RELATED TO HIGH
VOLTAGE GENERATORS ,
MOTORS WHICH ARE USED TO

ROTATE PROPELLERS IN THE

SHIP ARE REPAIRED IN THIS
SECTION .

PLUMBING
IN THIS SECTION THE
PLUMBING PARTS OF THE SHIP
ARE REPAIRED. PIPES OF
VARIOUS SIZES AND
DIAMETERS ARE AVAILABLE IN
THIS SECTION. IN CASE OF
REPAIR OF SUCH PARTS THOSE
ARE REPLACED IN THIS
SECTION. AS PER THE
REQUIRED DIAMETERS AND
SHAPES THEY ARE PUT INTO
VARIOUS OPERATIONS SUCH AS

BENDING , CUTTING , WELDING

BY USING DIFFERENT
METHODS. THESE PARTS IN THE
SHIP ARE LIFTED SHIFTED AND
REPLACED BY VARIOUS CRAINS.
PLUMBING IS THE CRUCIAL
SECTION.

RIGGING
Rigging is the mechanical sailing
apparatus attached to the hull in
order to move the boat as a whole.
This includes cordage sails
and spars. Cordage is more usually
the term for stocks of rope, yarn, or
other types of line in storage, before
it has been put to some use in
a vessel, where after is commonly

referred to as the rigging. In this

article, Rigging denotes the full set
of cordage, sails and spars, except
when it is part of another term
Certain sail-plans are used for
certain purposes according to their
aerodynamic properties.

STEEL SECTION
IN CASE OF ANY RUSTING IN
THE STEEL PARTS OF THE SHIP
THEY ARE POLISHED ,
REPLACED AND THEY ARE
COMPLETELY TAKEN CAERE
INTHIS STEEL SECTION OF THE
SHIP REPAIR DIVISION.
MATERIALS BENDING OR IF
THERE IS ANY DAMAGE TO THE
METALLIC PARTS OF THE SHIP
AND IF THERE IS ANY CHANGE
IN THE METALLIC PROPERTIES
OF THE METAL USED , THIS
STEEL SECTION IS VERY
CONVINIENT IN TACKLING
THOSE KIND OF PROBLEMS.

ENGINEERING
WORKSHOP
THIS WORKSHOP CONTAINS
DIFFERENT KINDS OF
MECHINERY SUCH AS LATHE
MACHINES AND ITS VARIOUS
TYPES, WEIGHT BALANCING
MACHINE , DRILLING
MACHINES, TOOLS USED IN
SUCH DRILLING MACHINES. IN
CASE OF THREADING, LATHE
MACHINES PLAY A VERY
PROMINENT ROLE. IN THIS
WORKSHOP TOOLS LIKE

CUTTING TOOLS, BEARINGS,

GEAR MECHANISMS , NUTS AND
BOLTS OF DIFFERENT PITCHES ,
COUPLINGS WILL BE USED AND
THEY ARE THE MAJOR
EQUIPMENT OF THE
ENGINEERING WORKSHOP
MECHINERY. DIFFERENT
MEASURING INSTRUMENTS
SUCH AS MICROMETERS,
VERNIER CALLIPERS, SCREW
GAUGES , SCALES ARE USED.
