MINISTRY OF WATER SUPPLY & DRAINAGE

NATIONAL WATER SUPPLY & DRAINAGE BOARD

KANDY CITY WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT PROJECT

(PACKAGE 2)

DESIGN APPROCH FOR ZONE T13

1. Introduction.
The T13 Zone mainly covers the Heerassagala Road, Bodiyangana
Mawatha, Mada bowala road, part of Dangolla, Udelke Road, Part of
Sirimavo Bandaranayake mawatha (Old Peradeniya road) from Gatambe
junction upto Heerassagala road, angampitya road and William Gopallawa
MW. Within the zone T13 Kandy court complex, Royal Mall, Okeray
Regency hotel and Kandian art are the major water consumers in the zone.
Northern boundary of the zone is Primrose Ridge (Ending points of by road
of Old Peradeniya road) and Zone T12, eastern boundary is Zone T09 and
Upper side of Heerassagala road, Southern boundary is deiyange ela and
the western boundary is Gatmbe junction and Angampitiya Road. This
zone T13 has elevations ranging from 602 MSL at the branch sewer
starting point of Heerassagala road to 469 MSL at angampitiya road.
Hotels such as okaray regency are willing to pump their waste water from
the basement floors much below the road surface level of the road Devani
Rajasinghe mawatha, and this attitude is good sign for the betterment of
the project.
2. Surveying comparison
We compare the details of the tender proposal drawings and topographic
surveying of the detail design at following locations.
- Major junction levels
- New roads
The Annex 01 attached shows the caparison of survey data at 8 locations.
3. Walk through surveying & Pipe routes selection
As per the Tender Proposal report and the contract the Zone T 13 include
10.9 km of branch sewers 1.78km of trunk sewer, several mandatory
trenchless location and service connections.
Walk though survey was carried out to investigate the preliminary design
drawing details with the actual site conditions to physically identify the
pipe routes and locations at site. The followings were reviewed in detailed
during the walk through survey.
Space and access for construction
Depth of excavation any obstacles
Possible alternative way for pipe lines
No mandatory trenchless locations but identified new additional
trenchless locations.
Pipe flow direction
Location and Position of culverts,
Steep slope areas, deep excavations and steps etc.

The location of culverts and their details are studied and observations are
shown in the Annex 02. The proposed pipe route which included trunk
sewers, branch sewers, services lines and location required easement are
shown in the Annex 03. Contour map of with the pipe network is in the
annex 04.
4. Comparison with tender proposal
Length of pipe lines:
The length of branch sewer line and trunk sewer line between PDD and
details design survey outcome are as follows.

Total survey completed 1215 houses except vihara mawatha from

herassagala road as vihara mawatha is considered to catchment T09 due
to its geometry. Contractor is reviewing the both house connection
surveys of T13 and T9 and accurate categorization will be finalized.

5. Issues at Special locations

Following issues at special locations were identified within the T 13 zone.

Mandatory Trenchless location by lane of Bodiyangana Mw

Due to the narrowness of the road difficulties in operating trench
less equipment (transport and handling) and also from the Y
junction of the road, it slopes to opposite to the flow direction hence
Trench Pipe line is proposed for the mandatory trench less section.
For the negative slope section branch sewer is proposed to road
slope direction and connecting to the branch sewer on the Ela. Refer
Annex no 5-1.

Udelke Road Steps and Rock on the surface

Due to steepness and the rock is present on the surface of the
ground and also houses are closer to each other in the area, hence
it is difficult to connect the above mention houses to the branch
sewer on the udelke road as well as for the by road on the
bodiayngana Mw. Refer Annex no 5-2
Sirimawo Bandaranayaka Mw near heerassagala road line buildings

Line building along the Sirimawo Bandaranayaka MW having no

space to provide the IC manholes at both side of the buildings,
hence proposing one IC for two buildings. Refer annex no 5-3.

Negative slope on the by lane of Heerassagala road, Refer Annex

no 5-4.
Due to the negative slope could not drain gravity to the
heerassagala road hence propose two options
Option 1: The gravity branch sewer line sloping same as road slope
and manhole pumping station at the turning circle of the road and
pumping to the Heerassagala road.
Option 2: branch sewer on by lane gravity pipe line sloping same
as road slope and connected to the Branch sewer line on the
bodiyangana Mw by crossing the canal under the storm water
drain.

Line building at the heerassagala road adjacent to the Meda Ela.

Entrance road to the heerassagala road is negatively sloping and
difficult to drain towards the heerassagala road hence propose two
options.
Option 1: Trench less pipe line to connect the zone to the Inlet
chamber of the proposed pumping station.
Option 2: service connection line along the meda ela to connect
the area to inlet chamber of the proposed pumping station

Refer Annex 5-6 Section on William Gopallawa Mawatha

Option 1: Deep branch sewer line on the side walk pavement of
William Gopallwawa Mawatha towards the Proposed Pump station
MPS 13-2
Option 2: manhole pumping stations as marked in the drawing and
individual pumps at the houses marked.

Refer Annex 5-7 Area highlighted on William Gopallawa Mawatha

near the Lumbini Royal collage entrance road
Option 1: Deep branch sewer line on the side walk pavement of
William Gopallwawa Mawatha towards the Proposed Main Pumping
station
Option 2: manhole pumping stations as marked in the drawing

Vihara Mawatha from the heerassagla road is incorporate to the

Catchment T09 according to the geometry of the area.
