1. In the movie, Nell was raised without normal human contact and so she acted with the ways
of that of an animal and speaking / singing her own language. Do you think this can happen in
real life?
A situation like this is very improbable but possible. Isolated places and wildernesses still exist
despite all the developments that are currently taking place at present. I think this will not
happen without the presence of an extremely isolated place and a rather peculiar condition -like that of Nells and probably other situations which are equally special as this one.
I think a baby would be a very appropriate example. A baby cant utter a single word upon birth
but as he/she grows up, hearing all the people around him/her talk, eventually learns how to talk
too (including the accent and stuff).
Then theres Nell. Having no one to listen to as she grows up had unknowingly resorted to
creating a language only she and her sister could understand. I think this movie just proved how
amazing human beings and language are. This movie proved that language indeed is powerful.
That people can craft their own language based off their own environment and survive.
And of course environment. As people living in the 21st century, who wouldve thought that living
in the woods without electricity and any technology is possible? That we could actually survive
without any interaction with anyone besides our family? (Which really proved to be difficult after
Nell was exposed to the real world, but nevertheless, she survived) .

2. How important is contact with other individuals to a persons development?

Contact is tremendously important. Its one of the keys to survive. Although the movie quite
proved that its possible to live almost alone, its still different to grow up and undergo the stages
of development in a normal and interactive world. We cant deny the fact that ideally, for one to
continue existing, he/she should socialize. We could see how Nell reacted when she started

seeing other people besides her sister and mother which is totally not the kind of reaction youd
get from a person who grew up normally.
The gaps that the lack of socialization had created in Nells life are very evident and it took time,
patience and effort on the doctors to fulfill them although not completely, but its a relief that
humans have the ability to adapt and adjust to different circumstances. This says a lot; we can
adapt to our environment and the people around us and eventually live the way they do. Its
magical.
If Nells behavior -- extreme and almost incorrigible was corrected through an intervention and
corrected, then those people with lighter social problems have higher hopes.

3. What do you think will be the rate of success/failure of systematic training program to adapt to
human relationships?
Success rate is not so high and failure rate is high. Training programs for people with social
problems like Nell is extensive and have way too many variables that make it difficult to tell the
chances of success of such program. Whereas failing is way too easy especially if the doctors
and other related people dont give their hearts to the program. It just needs a lot of effort and
patience on their side since the person being studied doesnt even know how to act accordingly.
Also, programs like this need a lot of research and study and we do know that it behavior is
something so innate to a person that its almost too impossible to be corrected.
The duration of the program is long. Changes dont happen overnight. Behaviors are not
corrected overnight. It requires more than that.
