NARRATIVE REPORT:
Meet Your Scientist: Be the Next Men and Women of Science
Meet Your Scientist: Be the Next Men and Women of Science was held in the
Philippine Science Heritage Center (PSHC), DOST Complex, Bicutan, Taguig City, last July
30, 2015. This is to encourage students to become members of the Science community
in the future.
The program started with a tour of the Philippine Science Heritage Center, an
institution that aims to showcase the contributions and achievements of Filipino
scientists. It also aims to promote awareness of the achievements of local scientists. The
exhibit consisted of some new technology aimed at making learning about Filipino
scientists more interesting and interactive. Some of these are the National Scientists
Browser, a computer that presents the contributions and other data about out national
scientists; Be a Biologist, which gives the students a chance to use a microscope that
does not need to be calibrated; Play DNA, which uses the concept of nucleotides to
create music; Pinoy Biotech, which displays the latest developments in Philippine
biotechnology; and Whos Who in Philippine Science?, which showcases the recently
awarded scientists by the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST).
The program continued with a lecture from Mrs. Susanna Esquivel from the Science
Education Institute regarding the scholarship program of the Department of Science and
Technology. Mrs. Esquivel briefed the students about the different programs of SEI to
improve scientific awareness, like the annual Summer Camp, Tagisang Robotics, Science
Explorer, Mobile IT Classroom, Philippine Math Olympiad, Australian Math Competition,
etc. She also talked about the requirements, provisions and benefits of being a DOST
scholar, as well as the courses and job opportunities. A 10-minute break followed shortly
thereafter.
During the registration, the students were asked to choose among the Health
Sciences Division, Agricultural Sciences Division, and Mathematical and Physical
Sciences Division. Their choice will be the orientation they will be part of. The students
chose the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Division. The orientation was led by Dr.
Richard S. Lemence, a member of the Department of Mathematics in the University of
the Philippines Diliman. The aim of the orientation, according to Dr. Lemence, is to
convince students to become mathematicians in the future. He talked about his job as a
differential geometer, as well as the connection of Computer Science, Mathematics and
Biology Bioinformatics. He explained the algorithm of the science, as well as the job
opportunities available in the field.
The program ended with the awarding of the resource speakers. Subsequently, the
students were given certificates of participation and cardboard fans from the PSHC.
