22nd March 2016

Hello everyone
Last week the Year 6 students went on camp and from all accounts it was a great success. The
students were exposed to a rich variety of activities that both challenged and built resilience and
social competence. Many thanks to Mrs Murray, Ms Hwang, Miss Dodson, Mr Swann, Ms
Williams, Ms Woods, Chappy and Mr Evans for the huge amount of work you dedicated to
ensuring the camp was both enjoyable and educative.
This year one of our primary focuses will be developing the use of digital technology. Digital
technology engages students with their learning which results in improved outcomes for all.
Looking to the future we want to build student capacity and staff capacity to engage with the
global community for continued success of our school in the 21st century.
Last year we commenced by ensuring the necessary infrastructure and tools were in place. We
have purchased 8 mini-iPads for every class and additional computers to build the computer lab
to a class set. Additionally we have invested in professional learning to support the development
of staff. We will extend the learning to families later in the year through the delivery of a number
of hands on information sessions.
To get the ball rolling many teachers have now created their own class Facebook page. This is
a wonderful way for teachers to communicate to the families of the students in their class on a
regular basis. Teachers are posting work that the class has done, focus areas and tips to
support at home.
After school pick up: Yesterday afternoon I received an email from a parent informing me a
vehicle has backed onto the path outside the school and run over a Year 1 students foot, the
person driving the car has not realised what has happened and has driven away. Fortunately
the child has not been seriously hurt, however he was distressed. Please be vigilant when
picking up and dropping off children, this means staying off pathways, keeping out of the staff
car parks and not parking illegally. I know this may mean parking towards the bottom of
Humphreys Street or even along Clifton street, but for the safety of our students we need to be
responsible even if this means having to park a distance from the school necessitating a walk to
collect your child.
Waste Free Lunch: Over the past 12 months we have implemented the Keep Australia Beautiful
Clean Schools program. The main aim of the program is to educate our students about the
benefits of re-cycling and waste reduction. This Thursday we will have another Waste Free
Lunch competition where the class that has the least amount of waste (packaging) in their
lunches will win a prize. I would like to thank Mrs Goldsmith who has coordinated and managed
this project resulting in the significant reduction in waste and development of students
awareness of the benefits of being environmentally responsible.
As most of you are probably already aware, Arlia Sluiter, teacher Year 5 Room 25, has gone on
maternity leave. Arlias replacement is Samantha Scanlan. A thorough hand over has been
completed with Sam working side by side with Arlia for two weeks prior to her leaving. We wish
Arlia all the very best and welcome Sam to our staff.
This Thursday, at the school assembly, entertainment will be provided by Year 1 Room 15, I am
very much looking forward to their item.
Finally, across the school students have been writing some outstanding Narratives and
Persuasive texts. On an excerpt for your enjoyment are some examples from Year 6 students
Room 11.

From The Canteen and P&C
Thank you to the 15 people who kindly filled in the Canteen
suggestion survey which was sent home at the beginning
of the term. Your ideas and suggestions are appreciated
and where acceptable will be used.
For those of you who are new to our school, the Canteen is
situated next to the Uniform Shop in the Undercover Area,
looking out onto the Oval.
Our Canteen is a registered one and therefore has to
comply with some rules and conditions. One of them being
the traffic light system.
GREEN - anytime food
AMBER - occasional food
RED - never food
Things like hot chips, chips and gravy, fish and chips,
schnitzels, etc will never be on our menu as they are
classed as RED foods in the traffic light system.
We are trying to introduce change slowly, as to not
overwhelm anyone. There will be a Winter Menu sent home
for Terms 2 and 3, hopefully your child/children will find
something they enjoy on there.
Mrs Mullally our Canteen Manager is very approachable,
so if you have any questions, not sure about something or
maybe just want to get a salad with your kids nuggets,
please go and speak with her.
Thank you for your support so far and we hope you can
continue to buy your child/children's lunches or recess
when possible.

MANAGING STUDENT BEHAVIOUR

WHAT IS BULLYING?

The key to this approach is that the child is given a choice at each step to
follow directions or face increased consequences.
Students making GOOD CHOICES are acknowledged for their efforts.
For students making POOR CHOICES the following consequences
apply ~

Bullying is when a student or group

keep picking on another student. They
try to hurt them physically or
emotionally.
The
behaviour
is
deliberate and repeated.

STEP 1
Student refuses to follow directions.
Verbal warning.
STEP 2
Student still refuses to follow directionsIn-class consequence e.g. Time Out
STEP 3
Student still refuses to follow directionsOut-of-class consequence e.g. Buddy
Class.
STEP 4
Student still refuses to follow directionsRED CARD is sent to the office.
Parents will be requested to attend
school.

SUSPENSION
Students will be immediately
suspended for verbal abuse of
staff and/or violence towards
staff or students.

RE-ENTRY FOLLOWING
SUSPENSION
Students returning from
suspension must be
accompanied by an adult and
will attend the Intervention
Centre (Room 20) where an
Individual Behaviour
Management Plan will be
developed and implemented.

A fight or disagreement between

equal students is not bullying.
HOW TO STOP BULLYING

Tell an adult, it is not dobbing to

ask for help. Both victim and
those bullying will be counselled
and supported.
Do not be a by-stander; if you
witness bullying try to stop it or
report it.
IF YOU ARE BULLYING

Step 1: Warning
Step 2: In school isolation and
counselling at recess and lunch,
parents will be notified
Step 3:
For continued breaches
