1 SCOPE
This EURONORM applies to hotrolled and coldformed
steel for the reinforcement of concrete with an improved
bonding action supplied in bars of nominal sizes from 4 to
50 mm, but does not apply to bars intended for the pre
stressing of concrete. The applicability of this standard to

bars of sizes in excess of 50 mm shall be the subject of

special agreement.
In addition to the general requirements of this Sheet 1, the
requirements specified in further sheets of this
EURONORM also apply to the individual types of bars.

2 DEFINITIONS
A steel for the reinforcement of concrete with an improved
bonding action is a steel with a surface or crosssection
which has a special shape such that a greater degree of
adhesive strength in the concrete can be achieved com
pared with a smooth bar.

These conditions may be deemed to be fulfilled in the case

of the types of steel covered by further sheets of this
EURONORM.

This definition includes those steels which have been

shown to attain the specified minimum values for bond
stress' by means of an approved test method2.

E.g., in conformity with the recommendations of the Comit Europen

du Bton (CEB).
E.g., in conformity with the Codes of Practice given by the Runion
internationale des Laboratoires d'Essais et des Matriaux (RI1.EM ).

3 DESIGNATION
the number of the relevant dimension standard.

3.1
When ordering a steel for the reinforcement of concrete
with an improved bonding action the following informa
tion shall be provided in the sequence indicated:
the term 'Concrete Reinforcing Steel',
the nominal size (in mm),
the grade designation of the steel (as specified in
EURONORM 80),
the code letters for the asdelivered condition (HK or
HW, see EURONORM 80),

4 DIMENSIONS AND TOLERANCES ON DIMENSIONS AND SHAPE

Unless otherwise specified in further sheets of this
EURONORM the following requirements are applicable:
4.1 Nominal size

4.1.2
The actual size of a bar shall be calculated from the mass
(see clause 4.2.2). It corresponds to the size of a smooth
bar with circular cross-section having the same mass per
unit of length.

4.1.1
The nominal sizes of the bars shall be given in Table 1.

These sizes only apply to cold-rolled steels for the reinforcement of concrete.

4.2 Cross-sectional area

4.2.1
The nominal cross-sectional areas calculated from the
nominal sizes, and the tolerances on the nominal crosssectional areas for the individual bars (determined as
specified in clauses 4.2.2, 6.1 and 6.2), shall be given in
Table 1.
4.2.2

The actual cross-sectional area Q shall be calculated from

the mass G and the length L of the test-pieces according to
equation
127.4 x G
Q =

(Q in mm2, G in g, L in mm) (see Clauses 6.1 and 6.2).

4.3 Length
4.3.1
Steel conforming to this EURONORM is normally supplied in manufactured lengths of from 12 to 14 m.
4.3.2

The supply of specified lengths shall be the subject of special agreement at the time of enquiry and order. In this
event the length tolerance shall be 100 mm for specified
lengths up to and including 20 m.

EURONORM 82 Sheet 1 Page 3

4.3.3

4.4 Straightness

Smaller tolerances for specified lengths as those given in

Clause 4.3.2; and tolerances for specified lengths in excess
of 20 m shall be the subject of special agreement.

Hot rolled steel conforming to this EURONORM is normally supplied in the as-rolled (not straightened) form or
straightened from the coil. Similar requirements apply to
cold formed steel for the reinforcement of concrete.

MASS A N D TOLERANCES O N MASS

those given in Table 2 as percentages of the total mass of a
consignment.
When supplying in accordance with Clause 4.3.3 the tolerances on mass shall be subject to special agreement.

5.1
The nominal mass given in Table 1 has been calculated,
using a value for density of 7.85 kg/dm', from the nominal cross-sectional area.
5.2
When ordering specified lengths with the normal tolerances (see Clause 4.3.2) the tolerances on mass shall be

In this context the tolerance on mass shall be taken as the

difference between the mass of a delivered quantity as
weighed, and the theoretical mass. The theoretical mass
shall be calculated from the nominal mass given in Table 1
and the sum of the nominal lengths of all the bars supplied.

TESTING OF DIMENSIONAL ACCURACY

6.1 Selection of the test samples

6.2 Test procedure

6.2.1

6.1.1
For the testing of tolerances on the nominal crosssectional area three test-pieces of sufficient length but
with a maximum total mass of 10 kg shall be sampled
from each batch in conformity with EURONORM 80
and arbitrarily from different bars in the batch.

The tolerances on nominal cross-sectional area shall be

determined from the difference between the test-pieces as
weighed and their theoretical mass.
For this purpose the length of the test-piece is measured
exactly to within 1 mm and the mass exactly to within 1 g.
The test result shall be the mean value of the results of the
three test-pieces.
6.2.2

6.1.2
These test-pieces shall consist of cleanly cut bar sections to
which no further modifications shall be made.

The routine verification of the bonding action (see Clause

2) in the case of steels as specified in this EURONORM is
carried out by measuring the geometrical surface characteristics of the bars and by ensuring that they correspond
to the specifications in this EURONORM.

Sheet 2

In addition to the general regulations for steel for the reinforcement of concrete with an improved bonding action as
specified in EURONORM 82 Sheet 1 the following supplementary specifications apply to ribbed steels.

1
This sheet applies to steels for the reinforcement of concrete with an improved bonding action provided with ribs
during hot-rolling which are supplied
in the hot-rolled condition (and if applicable subsequently cold-stretched)

SCOPE
or
in the hot-rolled condition and subsequently twisted in

length of the bar, and which run perpendicularly or obliquely to the axis of the bar. To safeguard against an
unscrewing effect, the bars shall have at least one continuous longitudinal rib or groups of oblique ribs with an
opposite or different inclination relative to the longitudinal axis of the bar.

For the steels specified in this Sheet 2, the improved bonding action shall be achieved by means of at least 2 groups

in the form of a spiral, longitudinal ribs shall be present
and have a minimum height of 0.07d (d = nominal size of
the bar).

4.5.2.1
The transverse ribs or the projection of the oblique ribs
shall extend over approximately 80% of the periphery of
the bar which shall be calculated from the nominal size.

when ordering, the bars shall be deemed to be satisfactory
if they attain the values for fR given in Tables 1 to 3. The
following formular shall be used for the projected rib
area:
k Fr sin

i a,
IR =
+
d c
jd
The second term only applies to coldtwisted steel as
specified in Table 3 or Figure Id.
Key to the formula:
k = number of rows of oblique or transverse ribs
Fr = longitudinal crosssectional area of an oblique or
transverse rib in its axis
= inclination of the oblique or transverse ribs relative to
the longitudinal axis of the bar
d = nominal size of the bar
c = interval of oblique or transverse ribs
i = number of longitudinal ribs
ax = height of longitudinal rib
jd = degree of torsion (pitch) for coldtwisted steel.

6.1 Selection of the test samples

6.2.2.1 Height of ribs

See EURONORM 82 Sheet 1.

In the case of crescentshaped ribs and height of the ribs a

shall be measured at the point where the rib height is

EURONORM 82 Sheet 2 Page 3

at least 10 d (d = nominal size) for bars as specified in
tables 1 and 2 or figures la and lc,

For this purpose the measuring distance is deemed to be

straight line and parallel to the longitudinal axis of the
bar; the length of the measuring distance shall be

one pitch length for cold-twisted bars as specified in

table 3 or Figure Id.
