What is the value of c such that the line y = 2x + 8 is tangent to the parabola y = cx2?
c=
$$18

Solution or Explanation
The line y = 2x + 8 has slope 2. The parabola y = cx2

y' = 2cx has slope 2ca at x = a. Equating slopes gives us 2ca = 2, or

ca = 1. Equating y-coordinates at x = a gives us ca2 = 2a + 8

(ca)a = 2a + 8

1a = 2a + 8

a = 8. Thus,

Page 3 of 13

Lab 2

12/8/15, 7:07 PM

Solution or Explanation
y = f(x) = x x2

f '(x) = 1 2x.

So f '(1) = 1, and the slope of the normal line is the negative reciprocal of that of the tangent line, that is, 1/(1) = 1. So the
equation of the normal line at (1, 0) is y 0 = 1(x 1)
x 1 = x x2

y = x 1. Substituting this into the equation of the parabola, we obtain

x = 1. The solution x = 1 is the one we require. Substituting x = 1 into the equation of the parabola to find

the y-coordinate, we have y = 2. So the point of intersection is (1, 2), as shown in the sketch.

Find constants A and B such that the function y = A sin(x) + B cos(x) satisfies the differential equation y'' + y' 8y = sin(x).
$$982
A =

$$182
B =

Solution or Explanation
y = A sin(x) + B cos(x)

y' = A cos(x) B sin(x)

y'' = A sin(x) B cos(x). Substituting these expressions for y, y',

and y'' into the given differential equation y'' + y' 8y = sin(x) gives us
(A sin(x) B cos(x)) + (A cos(x) B sin(x)) 8(A sin(x) + B cos(x)) = sin(x)
9B cos(x) = sin(x)

9A sin(x) B sin(x) + A cos(x)

(9A B) sin(x) + (A 9B) cos(x) = 1 sin(x),

so we must have 9A B = 1 and A 9B = 0 (since 0 is the coefficient of cos(x) on the right side). Solving for A and B, we add
1
9
the first equation to 9 times the second to get B =
and A =
