Option 1: Transformation

Many well-known artists, such as

Magritte, used transformations in their
artwork. A transformation is designed
as altering the characteristics of an
object or image from how they would
appear in real life. The key to strong
transformations is to be precise and
pay close attention to detail. The
objects that we use on a regular basis
tend to go unnoticed over time. We
stop seeing the form, color, or the
objects visual properties. Think
about what would happen if you took
shapes and color of regular objects
and applied them to a two-dimensional
drawing.

Experimentation and PreparationSelect
an option for the assignment that you are
interested in. Sketch ideas for your project
before starting. Experiment with colored
pencil technique.
CompositionArrange the imagery in an interesting way,
breaking up negative space, and leading the viewers eye
through the composition. Draw the imagery large enough for
the scale of the paper. Use overlapping objects to break up
large areas of negative space in Options 2 & 3.
Contour line drawingCreate an original sketch for the
image either freehand or with a grid (not traced); proportions
should be accurate.
Use a variety of
details to increase the
complexity of the image; choose an image
that is challenging for your ability level
Value and techniqueUsing Prismacolors,
create smooth transitions from one area to
the next to model the 3-D form of the object.
Layer colored pencil to get rich colors, blend
colors with a colorless blender and white
pencil in small motions. Avoid streaky
areas.

Option 3: Fractured Image

space, use overlapping to show
additional objects in the background.
Zoom in and really focus on the
objects and the colorful rendering of
your subjects. Visually capture the
scale, tonality, color and textures of
chosen objects as realistically as
possible. Give a viewpoint that
brings an object taken for granted
into the spotlight.
