Safety Standards
Working on high-voltage power equipment can be extremely dangerous.
Measuring using the CP RC must be carried out only by qualified, skilled, and
authorized personnel. Before starting work, clearly establish the responsibilities.
Personnel receiving training, instructions, directions, or education on the CP RC
must be under constant supervision of an experienced operator while working
on the high-voltage power equipment.
Measuring with the CP RC must comply with the relevant national and
international safety standards:

Safety Rules
Before operating the CP RC, please carefully read the following safety
instructions. It is not recommended to use the CP RC without understanding the
information in this manual. The CP RC should only be operated by trained
personnel.
Maintenance and repair is only permitted by qualified experts either at
OMICRON electronics repair centers.
Pay attention to the national and international standards for the safe
operation of high-voltage test equipment (EN 50191, IEEE 510).
Opening the housings of the CP RC Test Set invalidates all warranty claims.
Properly ground the CP RC and the CPC 100 by connecting them to the
common equipotential ground. Use ground connection cables of at least
6 mm cross-section. Never operate the CP RC without solid grounding.
CP RC User Manual
Orderly Measures
The CP RC User Manual or alternatively the e-book in PDF format has always
to be available on site where the CP RC is being used. It must be read and
observed by all users of the CP RC.
The CP RC may be used only as described in 2 "Operation" on page 15. Any
other use is not in accordance with the regulations. The manufacturer and/or
distributor is not liable for damage resulting from improper usage. The user
alone assumes all responsibility and risk.
Following the instructions provided in this User Manual is also considered part
of being in accordance with the regulations.
Disclaimer
If the equipment is used in a manner not specified by the manufacturer, the
protection provided by the equipment may be impaired.

Introduction
1.1
Designated Use
The CP RC is designated for performing high-voltage tests on GIS. The testing
system consists of the CP TR8 providing galvanic separation, the CP CR4 and
CP CR6 to compensate the reactive power, and the power voltage transformer
(VT). The power VT is part of the GIS and not provided by OMICRON
electronics. It replaces the standard VT inside the GIS and is designed to
withstand the needed test current.
Caution: It has to be guaranteed that the windings of the voltage transformer
can withstand the needed test current.
The busbars, the breakers, the disconnectors, the CTs and VTs inside a GIS
represent capacitive load on the high-voltage side of the voltage transformer
which is transformed to the low-voltage side by the square of the turns ratio.
Without compensating this reactive power, the CPC 100 is not able to deliver the
needed total power. The CP RC and the capacitive load build a parallel
resonance circuit. To get the exact resonance point, the test frequency is tuned
to resonance.

1.2
CP TR8
The CP TR8 provides galvanic separation of the booster output of the CPC 100
for resonance circuiting with the GIS. With a ratio of 1:1 and an inductivity of
8 mH, capacitive loads can be compensated.

Operation
Operation
This chapter provides a general description of the measurement setup.
Furthermore, it gives an overview of the compensation ranges for different
connection versions of the CP TR8, CP CR6 and CP CR4, as well as an
instruction on how to set up. Moreover, the HV Resonance Test System test
card to perform the high-voltage measurement is described.
As already mentioned earlier in this manual, different connection versions are
possible and/or required, depending on the load. All possible connection
versions are described below.
Warning: Use only designated connection options to prevent a life risk!
2.1
General
Independent of the connection option used, the following measurement
connections have to be provided (see Figure 2-1 on page 16):
For current measurement on the power VTs input, connect the current
transformer delivered in the package.
Press the Emergency Stop button on the CPC 100 front panel. Continue with
connecting only if the green warning light is on.
Connect terminals k (S1) and l (S2) to the I AC input of the CPC 100.

In all connection options, all elements of the setup have to be grounded using
the equipotential ground connection. For this purpose, use the grounding
cables delivered in the package.
Connect the EXT. BOOSTER output of the CPC 100 to the BOOSTER
INPUT of the CP TR8 with the booster cable.

Operation
Compensation Ranges
Table 2-1 shows the possible compensation ranges. The indicated capacitances
refer to the low-voltage side of the VT. In order to calculate the maximum
capacitance on the high-voltage side, the ratio of the VT has to be considered.
Example: Ratio of the VT = 110 kV:100 V, C (HV side) = 1 nF:
C (LV side) = 1 nF x (110,000/100)2 = 1210 F
